the CGI better be good..

I know that some of you have liked the CGI in NEMESIS and INSURRECTION...I haven't. I think both those movies had very crappy CGI and my 'non' STAR TREKS, who I dragged to see the movie, totally made fun of it BOTH times....

The CGI better work. Those ships better look like they actually have MASS. And so far, I have liked the CGI we have seen EXCEPT for one shot...the plant folding in on it's self...not buying that scene...but we shall see..we shall see...

agreed. the planet destruction is too far away. cgi gets screwed up all the time, even in big movies. spiderman seems like a videogame. the new star wars films seemed ultra fake.

i like the j.j. idea of making things look rusty and used. i hope there's a tactile quality to everything.

how would you do a planet imploding? i'd love to do a shot of a person on the planet's surface and then pull away as the planet implodes.

Ummmm...Good question there...I am not a CGI expert....or planet exploding expert...but sometimes they get it right...I actually like the planet explosion in GENERATIONS, believe it or not...But this movie it just looks to cartoony...and way to fast....If this planet blowing up is the one we think it is, then they should show the cities going, the common person going, then pull back as you say, and maybe from right above the planet it explodes and the camera pulls back as the derbie overtakes it and it banks around and the debris flies past....and there is nothing but silence....cold silence...an entire civilization has been wiped out...and all that is left is the dark silence of space..

God I got goosebumps!!

Everything seems to be lit in a yellowish hue, with convincing ships exploding left and right.

What the hell, it worked for Homeworld, right?

Spoken like someone who wasn't around to be a Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan in the 70's. We didn't have CGI, we had claymation! And we loved it! Go watch Clash of the Titans and complain about Nemesis' CGI! God, you are making me feel so old, you SOB!

*sob* We had claymation...

Don't cry Renegade.. We're just a sign of Our times...

I loved Clash of the Titans... The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad...
...The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms... Gumby... :guffaw:

But We also had 2001: A Space Odessy... Star Wars... Star Trek: The Motion Picture... The Abyss...:techman:

At the time and considering the technology, They were just as good as what We're getting now!

I was there...The Seven Voyages of Sinbad..I was there with you dude..All I'm saying is that I think the FX of Nemesis and Insurrection just weren't that good...and having seen Nemesis 'in passing' a few weeks ago while at a freinds house, I stand by what I said...

If what I've seen in the trailers is any indication, the cgi will be fucking outstanding.
ILM+big budget = win

ILM probably put their best CGI people to work on Transformers but considering the budget of Trek I don't think we'll be disappointed.

I took thought the Nemesis CGI was awful, probably even worse than the Insurrection visual effects.

Also liked the planet exploding in Generations.

 I don't think it works like that.

Please tell me how it works then, seeing as we both clearly work in the computer animation field

I do work in computer animation, and that's not how it works. Everyone at ILM is among the best computer animators and visual effects artists in the world.

Besides, visual effects artist don't always have stable full time jobs. An artist might finish Star Trek, then move on to another computer animation company for a few months, then come back to work on Transformers, then leave again. It's a pretty fluid business.

Or work on more than one project at once. There are a few good documentaries that feature ILM, and one thing that is clear is that someone working on X movie scene this week might for one reason or another be working on an entirely different project the next. These are not static operations where they have one project and a person gets put on that movie and works on it until the movie goes to print.

It's been so long since I watched INS or NEM, I don't recall how well or not their CGI appeared. 'Bout time for a revisit...

I too had a beef with that planet imploding shot, I decided not to bring it up but will now vent about it, even on the big screen it looked kinda cheap. In one of my caps of it, the yellow streak from the INS poster is faintly visible, (hope that's not a bad omen) cutting across the planet and to its right, the arrangement of background stars look like the Scarecrows mask. Here it is. I don't know how that happened.

The ships look very real so far...
