I like my boss. He leaves me the fuck alone except when he HAS to talk to me. I know if I need him, he is but a phone call away. I try not to need him, and he tries to let us be as we are more productive that way. He doesn't micromanage us, and we don't bother him with any problems we can handle ourselves.

We call him The Ghost. And will miss him dearly when he retires in a few years.

Have you ever been in a position, where the main boss likes you, but the one directly above makes out you are a fool? Sticks a pin in your project, so it deflates slightly, and when you go and try and sell it, you have to repatch it a bit? Keeps winding you up, so you say the wrong things and irritate the main boss?

What's the answer there? Keep your mouth shut and your door closed? Do your project in a week?

Or, have you ever been in the situaion, where the main boss gives advice for improvement, and the intermediate boss passes it on, condescendingly, making out it is his advice, and you blow up and lash out? The solution seems to be a near perfect project, or at least a very good one.

Well, generally, you have to keep intermediates posted on what you are doing, or it looks as if you are doing nothing. And, you can't help giving some things away, whether you have a door, or not.

Cheapjack, I can't help but be curious, what type of work do you do?

Yes, the answer is to always do your best work. Also, network A LOT! Never let one single person have too much influence over you. Get to know others in the company. If you're on good terms with more people, one negative person won't have much impact because they'll be the exception to the rule.

Also, never "do nothing." That just gives your boss more ammunition. You don't want that. Strive for perfection. Get your good ideas out there to as many people as you can. Be friendly. Be smart.

If this doesn't work, start searching for a new job.

Thanks for the advice, Mr Awe.

I'm the ideas man. I've made teo comments about how the company is run, prompted by my intermediate, and some bad experiences in the past, and I shouldn't have said them. I'm the ideas man.

Cheapjack, if you sincerely want folks who don't know you or your work situation to actually give you helpful advice, you're going to have to share some concrete details.

You can start with these:

1. What exactly do you do?
2. What's your job title and responsibilities?
3. What's the management structure of your employer? Is it a large company? Small one? Government job?
4. What role do you want to have within the organization in the future?

Otherwise, it's kind of hard to give you advice, because we don't have a very clear picture of what's going on, outside of the fact that you believe you have many ideas, and you're not happy with your boss.

This thread used to be good. Now it just makes me laugh.

Speaking purely as an accountant here....anyone who calls himself an 'ideas man', but who cannot give any concrete examples or provide any clarity around that statement? To me, that might well be the entire problem with his boss.

If he can't communicate these 'ideas' to us, then I doubt the boss is getting them either.
