The Boss.

Well, there have been other contributions from people in similar positions with the boss. I'd just give up and leave some people alone, if I was a boss. I don't see what you get out of leaning to people, who are fairly isolated as it is, and then congratulating yourself when they blurt something out and put their foot in it. I've only said bad things, when under extreme stress. Some people have a lot more power and control than I have, but I'm the one to blame for the fact that the water dispenser doesn't work, or the secretary got the sack.

I work on a tarantula farm.

We're developing a new breed.

Just joking. Does it matter? Thanks for all the replies, though, very helpful.

What do you do, then?

Maybe they'll replace me with someone who doesn't say bad things, when a lifechanging, life peaking, project goes out the window. I'd love to know where they are.

Dude...for the umpteenth time...seriously what do you do, either your being awkwardly mysterious, in an attempt to gather infamy or this is some attempt to troll the board

Which is it, seriously people are getting pretty miffed about all this, the thread will probably get locked at this rate and the entire 10 page long discussion will have been about absolutely nothing at all

I mean are you afraid that someone is going to miraculously track you down based on your job description?

OK, I'm a writer, right? I'm trying to write something. A bit like Sisko's character, from 'Far beyond the Stars', but no way as tragic, romantic or heroic. Or, as put upon. Or, as unflawed. And, sometimes I feel as if I don't represent a whole underclass, just myself.

Thanks, anyway.

That just goes to show I was better talking in generalisms. I've passed about twenty deadlines, but my script should be finished friday week. What on earth is holding me up, I don't know.

Thanks, anyway.

Considering nobody could figure out what the hell you were talking about before, I'd say no.

These are things that we don't know that make it impossible to figure out what is going on:

What is your job?
What is your boss's job?
What does your boss actually expect of you?
What are you not doing that you're having such problems with your boss?

1. I'm a writer.

2. He's the boss.

3. To contribute.

4. I made some derogatory remarks, ages ago, quite bad ones, but understandable, and only in a washroom, and they got back to him. He asked me for a frank view of his leadership about the same time and i gave him a full endorsement of his leadership, but with one proviso that i guess was not liked, but which I felt reflected the mood of the office.

I think the advice I would offer, is, when the boss asks you for a sum-up of his image in the office, be very careful, and don't slip in any private opinions as an add on. Especially when he is in a sacking mood. You can get quite a bit of stick for it. And, don't even go into his office to offer them, spurred on by a general comment from him, as he walks past, about his popularity. You won't get a medal for it. Wait for him to call you in, or let someone else do it.

I think things will work out. It's just a bit difficult.

^ The advice you're giving to yourself sounds good. Also, remember that derogatory remakrs are never "understandble" and being "only in a washroom" doesn't lessen their impact. Just don't say those types of comments in a work environment, or anywhere really. You're asking for trouble. Keep it professional even when things get difficult.

You need to work really hard, don't give them any reason to fire you. Be professsional and curteous. That's if you want to keep this job. It may actually be better to move on to a new place, but only you can decide that.

And, remember my earlier advice, NETWORK. When more people know you and know what you're doing it's harder for your boss (or anyone else) to take credit or make you look bad. In a previous job, I had a jerk of a boss and it was through networking that kept me afloat. Other people higher than he knew of the good work I was doing.

Mr Awe

Thanks.

Also, I am referred to in the office, derogatively, sometimes, by the secretaries, as I walk past them. I don't know whether that is coming from the boss. Common sense tells me it is a result of the comments I made in the washroom. It makes me glad that they at least acknowledge me, but it gets me a bit riled sometimes and I stab at my keyboard.

And, as you said, network.
