The best Scifi Game - EVER ! ?

Greatest video game of them all

Guess I'll go with Fallout, Mass Effect, and Starcraft, since Star Control 2 and Escape Velocity aren't on the list. If you want to get into which presents the best science fiction regardless of whether or not it's the best game, I'd probably choose Mass Effect.

Question answered. Thread can be closed now. :p

Indeed. It's epic, atmospheric and the gameplay was pretty damn revolutionary for it's time.

It also has some of my favourite cutscenes in a game, ever.

EDIT: Though I have to admit, Cataclysm is my favourite out of the series.

Star Control 2 and Escape Velocity are great games, I can think of a few others that should be on the list. Word up to to the final fantasy games in the above pic. They revolutionized RPGs with great battles and great story telling mixing future technology with mythological cultures of the past but if I have a criticism its these final fantasy games are too geeky! It takes hours just to learn the attacks and magic and perhaps many months to play these games

Alpha Centauri easily gets my vote, although if Blade Runner: The Game or Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance had been in contention, I might have changed my mind.

It's between Frontier: Elite 2 (it and it's predecessor being conspicuously absent from the poll :vulcan:) and Mass Effect for me.

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance

Sadly, I never played that (it didn't get a Mac version). However, I did watch some clips of it on YouTube, and I was greatly disappointed by the generic music. Whatever happened to the context-adaptive MIDI tracks of TIE Fighter?

I voted for Mass Effect, although Homeworld, Starcraft, Freelancer, Starlancer, Nexus: The Jupiter Project and many, many others would be on my list.

I preferred the actual orchestral music of X-Wing Alliance, even if it was pulled from the library of music John Williams wrote for the first three Star Wars films (the OT). But it's been a while since I've played the game. Mostly, I just really liked playing a storyline that took place on the fringes of the galactic civil war. It was something different for the Star Wars universe (and, moreso, the X-Wing series). It's too bad it doesn't quite have an ending (besides the tacked on Death Star missions that, while fun, are unrelated to the events of the game).

Shame we can't repost this poll in a month or so after Spore comes out. :)

I voted for GC2. I'm a sucker for a strategy games that let you design your own spacecraft. Runner up would be Homeworld.

Alpha Centauri was okay, but I tend to suck at Civ type games. Plus I have a personal gridge against this particular title. The one time I played it, I was on the verge of winning the thing when my system crashed on me and I lost hours of gameplay. Just never got back to it.

A HUGE fan of the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series, so yeah its exclusion from the list is a bit of FAIL.

C'mon, they pretty much HAD to include the Death Star mission. Can you imagine the sheer level of pissing and moaning from players if they hadn't?

Voted for Doom.

Alpha Centauri is also great, though. It was a close call. Centauri's definitely got a lot of interesting ideas and some great sci-fi world building for a game, but... well... Doom is just so damn fun.

I thought X-Wing Alliance was a great improvement over her predecessors.

I voted for Mass Effect and Final Fantasy VII. Though I also have a soft spot for FFX, FFXII and the Wing Commander games.

A.C. was great-and Star Control should have been listed-but Defender! I don't know how much money I put into that thing! I did roll the sucker and stack max ships up on it, though. Hours of delight.

From the list, Doom, Halo, Jedi Knight. Though, honestly, I had more fun playing Doom 3 and Quake 4. Doom 3 the most. I know, Sacrilege.

The gun/flashlight thing was irritating. I think it helped pile on the anxiety, though. Here I go walking into a dark room full of zombies with no gun... AAAHHHAHAH!!!! I don't think any other horror game actually scared me before.

Jedi Knight II is cool, as is KOTOR, but the most FUN I've had with a sci-fi game is Anachronox. Brilliantly funny game.

Star Wars: KOTOR would have been my top pick, or Star Wars: Tie Fighter (I cant believe that game is almost 15 years old). Since neither were there I chose Jedi Knight II and Halflife (both of which are in my favorites list - and 10 years old... I feel old).
