They aren't more powerful. They are just more aggressive than the Jedi. The Jedi here haven't seen them in nearly a thousand years and so they have got rather relaxed in their combat abilities.
The Jedi in the KotOR era were more warrior like as they could easily go up against a Sith

And, of course, the other characters keep emphasizing that nobody's ever seen this guy's face, which means we're in for a Big Reveal. (TM) Qimir is the only character in the show that would make sense.

One possible twist on the twist would be if Qimir were also one of a pair of twins. So, surprise! It's Qimir. Except, surprise! It isn't.

Let's hold off on judgement. Sidious killed multiple Jedi in seconds. We haven't seen that yet from the new guy.
