Thanks for screwing Star Trek, CBS...

Is Abrams going to ban stuff from Episode 1-6 of Star Wars when he's in charge?

I hope he does because aside from the lego most of the Star Wars merchandise is rubbish IMO.

He doesn't need to, they're carrying over the characters and the actors since it is presumably all the same reality-line.

I remember that!

You would think some people would tire of embarrassing themselves with claims of the way "things use to be".

That is why it's my example any time someones whips out "Star Trek is a serious intellectual franchise". Well that and I try to force them watch "Spock's Brain", "Shades Of Grey", and "Threshold"

I just use this:

I guarantee you that a certain number of idiots will read this whole thing as "That arrogant SOB Jar Jar Abrams wants to take away my right to buy Leonard Nimoy pajamas! Wah!"
you could have at least waited until someone took the bait.

Why? Am I violating the spirit of some "Give A Moron A Break Day" that no one told me about?
Come on, Admiral. You know I don't like to see people saying rude things about fan groups - not even the ones who hold "Jar Jar Abrams" to be an incredibly clever and witty criticism.

Was it really necessary to lace this thread with crude expletives and back-handed insults to a large chunk of the membership?
There's no rule explicitly prohibiting the use of expletives and—as someone who's spent no small part of his post count on insinuations that people would have to be stupid, ignorant and not Real Trek Fans™ to like and enjoy Abrams' take on Star Trek—you are hardly in a position to be criticizing anyone for employing back-handed insults. I suggest you sit down now, mos, and refrain from engaging in further back-seat moderation. (You may PM me at your leisure to explain precisely which "large chunk of the membership" you feel was being slighted, but I want to see no more of it from you in this or in any thread in this forum.)

There's a number of people around here that do think that if you don't share their opinions, if you don't think what they do and agree with everything they say that there is something wrong with you, and it's completely justifiable to insult and demean you.
It's not justifiable to insult other posters. Period.

Anyone who doesn't like my opinions is free not to read my posts.

This wasn't just a post. It's a new thread that is of topical interest to both fans and detractors of JJ Trek, as it speaks to the general future of the franchise. But the way you started the thread basically sets a mine-field in front of anyone who might do anything other than grab their knives and pitchforks and storm CBS.

Even the thread title is slanted. CBS is "screwing Trek" because of this, in your mind. It's not protecting its options to continue to curate or dust off Prime Continuity. It's "screwing Trek" because the legacy IP should be confined to the dustbin of history and JJ can do no wrong and should be given complete autonomy? That is hardly a universal opinion here, even among those who liked his films.
Again: topic, not mini-modding. That's not your job.

Back to topic now, please.

Hasn't there been some recent talk that Paramount is looking into restarting it's television division?

Didn't they already try to create a network and fail miserably?

Twice... (UPN & EPIX)

I'd love to see the Bad Robot market research stating that there was "brand confusion" between his Trek and Prime Trek.

Honestly, I don't think there are any good answers here. CBS wants to protect their revenue streams, and Abrams wants to ensure the best possible success for anything his production company does with Trek. I honestly don't think it's worth killing a possible cash cow like a new TV series, etc. over, but I'm imagining that there's tons of behind-the-scenes stuff that we just don't know.

It could be a simple case of CBS being incredibly difficult to work with and Abrams not wanting to deal with it. I doubt it has anything to do with "arrogance" or anything other personal motivations people may ascribe to him.

That said, just because CBS doesn't want to work with Bad Robot on a new TV series doesn't mean that televised Trek is dead.

Trek survived the cancellation of TOS, Trek survived TMP, Trek survived Voyager and Enterprise, and Trek will survive both CBS and Abrams.

Ask the folks at Cryptic what it's like to work with CBS...
I'm sure you'll get an earful... off the record, of course.

;)

I'm surprised STO is still around. Not cause it's a bad game (average in my opinion, fun but average), but cause of CBS running the show.

I have no idea what kind of sources and inside knowledge TrekMovie may or may not have but they've been saying on twitter that this story is BS.

BS or damage control?

I want cool Star Trek toys and a new TV show.

Fuck you, whoever is stopping that from happening.

Yep. It saddens me, too. Thanks to CBS, that's why the 2009 movie toys are expensive as hell. I wanted a 2009 Trek movie toy phaser, but even on Amazon.com they're $40.

My FYE store at the local mall has a few leftover electronic tricorders and communicators from the last film, but even after almost four years and the release of a new movie the 2009 film merchandise is still a little too exorbitantly priced for my blood, even at a chain like that.

I adore the TOS era and earlier years of Trek as much as anyone else here and they're an integral part of my shaping as a person since my earliest memories, but Dennis is right. The hardcore TOS fanbase is getting older by the day and with the fiftieth anniversaries of both "The Cage" and the original series' network run coming in the next few years it's not as if the dedicated cadre of folks who worship Bill Shatner, styrofoam rocks and blinky-light Starfleet computers is going to keep getting bigger as the younger generations and those yet unborn discover the Abramsverse and any vision and incarnation of Trek that follows it.

CBS can't put all its eggs in the Classic basket ad infinitum as much as most of us love what's in it.

The only thing they have to worry about the nuTOS cast leaving, but they can always recast. Hey it worked for Bond for what? Over 20 movies? If it is written well, people will come.

They can try reboot TNG.

They can go with a completely new crew after Abrams Trek. This is probably the largest risk if the audiences have no interest in new characters.

As long as people are interested, there will be more Trek.

Never ever put any stock in a 'news' item that features 'quotes' from unnamed sources. Chances are, it's all made up by some soulless hack dripping ketchup over his keyboard as he types with one finger.

EPIX is still going on, but Paramount is only a co-founder of that network along with MGM and Lionsgate. And unlike UPN, EPIX doesn't do scripted shows, just primarily sports and music specials alongside the broadcasting of theatrical movies from their respective studios and others.
