Thanks for screwing Star Trek, CBS...

In following this thread, I still don't entirely know what the hubbub is about, probably because I don't buy toys or other trek merchandise. However, I am really happy my favorite series is getting a remaster (And it's remarkable) but if there was one thing this movie did for me it was I want to see these characters every week. I want to get to know them, get to love them, and not have to wait every 4 years to see something new from this new universe. I want a TV show, and like someone upthread said, screw those who are not making that happen. I don't know if it's CBS, Paramount, or just someone in a basement somewhere, I want a TV series. Trek has always worked better as a TV show, and in this market where you don't have to go to a network, I don't understand why it can't work, especially when the interest is sky high.

Oh bloody hell.

Merchandise, especially figures and prop replicas. They were terrible. I was so hoping they would choose a decent merchandise manufacturer, or continue using, albeit expensive, art asylum.

When they announced playmates had the 09 rights i knew they would be badly made, look nothing like their counterparts, and most of us were right. In fact I remember the Pike figure looked pretty identical to the Kirk figure. The others I wouldn't even hand full price over. In fact, up until late last year, some figures were still at my local toy shop for £2.99 each and I still didnt consider it.

Shame that merch for STID doesn't exist. Missed opportunities:
•Warp core play set and dead Kirk figure.
•Khans gunship with a dozen officers to shoot down with foam bullets. :censored:
•Spock and khan fight play set with spring loaded Vulcan uppercut action. :ouch:
•Carol Marcus 12" doll with removable starfleet gear includes peeping Tom Kirk. :shifty:
•USS Eenterprise motorised submarine. :techman:

It's like saying that, when the Star Wars prequels came out, all OT toys and merchandise must cease - even though most toy buyers still preferred Millennium Falcon and X-Wing replica toys to...uh...I actually can't name a single ship from the prequels.

Heathen.

But yeah, you make a good point. I'm a Star Wars fanatic and to be frank the first and easiest Prequel ship to come to mind is Queen Amidala's Royal Starship from Episode I, followed a distant second and third by the Jedi Starfighters and Darth Maul's Sith Infiltrator. Most OT ships are iconic and almost universally recognized. Most PT ships just kind of blend into the background noise and don't stand out.

Couldn't agree with you two more. I love some PT ships, but agree with the fact that they are not as recognisable as the falcon, or death star, or star destroyer, or a tie fighter or x wing.

You can say the same with the posters for STID. Our ones here in the uk we got boring ones with character shots firing weapons above Cumberbatch. Looked like an amateur photoshop job.

However, domestic ones stateside, you got that awesome shot of the Enterprise going down in flames. It's a universal image. Most of the US knows the silhouette of the Enterprise, however here, other than trek fans, probably only 45-50% know what that ship looks like. So they obviously went for a generic action movie set up poster to sell it here.

Is it?

While Trekkies would love a new Star Trek series, even the box office success of the recent movies might not equate to a big enough audience that can keep a new series afloat.

When TNG was greenlighted, the TV landscape was so different back then. It was pretty much the only game in town and was generally unopposed during its run. Subsequent Trek shows had to deal with more competition, and the last two were made solely because a small struggling TV network needed them badly and was willing to flip the expensive bill for them despite declining ratings.

It may be that only way a new Trek series can be made is if it can be done as cheaply as possible with minimal sets, costumes, and special effects.

A Trek would do fine, you can't equate box office to TV ratings. Trek is one of few (only?) franchises to successfully transition from television to movies. Even Enterprise got an initial 12m viewership, CBS are missing a trick by not having a Trek show on television at the moment with how the market is - especially with DVD boxsets etc.

I've heard CBS referred to as the network for older people. Since I watch very little TV now, I can't say if it is true. But if it is, I don't see them putting Star Trek on their network.

CBS probably used to be the network for older people, but today, aren't they the home of TV's top rated comedy that hits so close to home for many fans of Star Trek and science fiction?

As for the interest, I think it's there. The new movie came out, it's going to be the top movie in the box office, and I think fans are really just itching for a new series featuring these characters. What is holding Star Trek back in terms of coming back to TV, and I don't believe it's a battle of wits between CBS and Bad Robot.

CBS should just sell to Paramount. They're not going to do anything with the property. Other than rerelease the shows on home media formats ad infinitum

I just can't see current Trek making it on TV. It costs too much. And many of the sets are redressed locations which probably would not be available for filming as frequently required for TV.

Battlestar Galactica had a lower budget than Enterprise, but looked far better and had a better cast...

That's a steady stream of revenue, though. They're not going to let that go so easily.

CBS isn't relenquishing the Trek franchise anytime soon. That's a non-starter to any discussion.

At first I was ready to hate on CBS, until I read the whole article. I don't see why CBS would have any incentive to not stop selling Original Series stuff, it's guaranteed money. Though that whole brand confusion study sounded odd to me.

And I don't see why CBS couldn't just sell both New Trek and Old Trek. I think people are smart enough to get it. And they could make money from fans of both.

I was intrigued by the idea that Abrams had grander ambitions, including a TV show. I always wondered why Trek 2009 wasn't followed up by a cartoon at least or why the adult novels were canceled, so this article gives me some possible inklings into that.

It's a shame that CBS and Paramount couldn't work together to create a bigger experience. Though the box office for Into Darkness doesn't seem to be hurt by the lack of build up since 2009. I guess Trek 2009 left people feeling really good about the franchise and wanting to see more. Too bad that CBS and Paramount didn't capitalize off that more.

The Who fans are just as whiny as Trekkies, however. Look at your average Who message board, and you'll see people saying 'Moffat SUCKS! This is NOT my Doctor!'

Yeah, maybe there could be rallies and bumper stickers like "I Want My Star Trek Back!" These sorts of things have become very popular in America.

"Dude, your Star Trek failed."

The world is big enough for both classic Doctor Who merchandise and nu Who stuff. I don't see why having Shatner and Pine merchandise is such a problem

Although BBC did temorarily suspend classic Doctor stuff when the show came back in 2005. Even the novel line featuring past Doctors. Although classic era DVDs have been released on a regular basis all along.

Personally, I thought it was ridiculous to do that, and I'm someone who was introduced to Doctor Who through the nu series in 2005. Oh well, the past Doctors are once again getting their merchandise on the shelf, which I guess is the important thing.

And vice-versa, and I think that's what CBS is being mindful of.
CBS should just sell to Paramount.
Not going to happen. That would be like Disney selling the entire Star Wars franchise to 20th Century Fox or the Marvel (Iron Man, The Avengers, etc.) franchises to Paramount.

That's currently good enough for CBS. Plus they also make money from Paramount and other companies they license Trek out to.

Pretty much this. This was true even in Roddenberry's day. The only reason why we got TOS at all was because someone (Lucille Ball, of all people) decided that it was worth the expense despite having cheaper and perhaps more profitable alternatives available.

Maybe if CBS runs out of cheaper and more profitable alternatives...

The article itself doesn't sound quite right to me.

And that's what makes the article suspect. CBS does sell both New and Old Trek and awards licenses to anyone willing to pay for either or both (Hasbro and Mattel currently both have toy licenses to produce products based off Old and New Trek).
