Terra Nova season one 09/26/11:

Actually, historically speaking, military rule is pretty much the norm for newly established colonies. Eventually though they'll have to set-up some type of governing body. Most likely something akin to a Mayor at first (like Taylor is now) and later a council made up of prominent citizens. As things stand it's all very precarious as if Taylor dies, there'd be one hell of a power vacuum. I mean I can't see the colony being as eager to follow his chief lieutenant, she seems more of a follower than a leader.
Which was the whole purpose of this week's episode - clearly Taylor is grooming Jim to take over in case something happens because he likely realizes his soldier-lieutenant isn't up for the task of protecting the colony and keeping everyone together psychologically as well as physically. And it looks like it worked quite smoothly - the military didn't rebel against a non-military (or non-Taylor) commander and Jim seemed to work well as a leader.

Taylor most likely recognizes that a civilian government is going to develop eventually. Why not groom a person to appear to the masses as a natural leader who has shown he can work with the military but is not part of said military? It may be why Taylor hasn't slapped a 'battlefield commission' on Shannon.
You're probably right; I'd love to see this expanded in the next season, some of the episodes should be dealing with the fallout of Season 1 finale and then begin the process of democracy. If this show lasts a few seasons they will need to do this although I have doubts about it lasting as there's too few "main characters" to really last and too few "side plots".

I really enjoyed this episode, Mira and Taylor worked well together, and have a much better understanding of each other's positions and motivations now. The Conspiracy Arc is finally revealing itself.

I think this show, like many others, just didn't pace itself properly. It's fine they have all the "Teen Drama" to appeal to the demographic they're going after, but, personally, I think they should've slowed that down, stretched it out, which would've left room to expand on the Conspiracy Arc earlier. I think this would've made the earlier episodes more appealing, and given the show a better chance.

There's one amazing thing about this show so far: It's the first time I've seen a depiction of those enormous dragonflies I've read about and dreamt about seeing (and also dreaded).
Using them instead of a carrier pigeon was a nice touch as well. The nerd in me got terribly excited

I don't know, I found the recent episode rather bland and by the numbers. Although I am starting to enjoy the interplay between Jim and Malcolm. I was initially hesitant over the whole "hunsband meets wife's ex-boyfriend" thing, but those two's sarcastic insults are proving to be rather amusing.

But like I predicted, it's basically your standard two stranded enemies learn to work together to survive storyline which has been done plenty of times in Star Trek among other shows. Hell, we even have a Balance of Terror-like moment when Taylor and Mira commenting that in another reality they could have been friends.

Eh, whatever. It's not the worse show I've watched.

How many more episodes for this season? I think they only filmed 13?

Yep. Those 13 will comprise all of the first season.
Hmmm... Are you sure it's 13 episodes? IMDB shows 11 episodes only (First episode being a 2 hour episode, so, 12 if you count it as 2). Only 2 episodes to go, Dec 12, Dec 19. Maybe the final episode will be a double episode and that's where 13 comes from (Like Falling Skies did, double episode for Premiere and Double episode for Season finale).

Or is IMDB, just plain wrong?

IMDB has been known to be wrong. Yes. It's always been 13. Maybe it should be said: 13 hours. The premiere was two episodes aired as one. That might account for a part of the numbering problem on IMDB.

The season finale is broadcast on December 19. Counting how many episodes they already showed, it seems like it will consist of two episodes.

Sorry, yea of course IMDB has been known to be wrong, but, this far in, the number of episodes is typically accurate, so, that's why I was questioning it, if 13 was accurate, then that would indicate the Finale was a double episode, which I wasn't aware of.

With the double episode Premiere, and a double episode finale, that accounts for all 13

I'm kinda liking the interplay between Shannon and his daughter's suitor. He's being a nice Dad, but still likes to make the kid sweat a little. It's amusing.

The rest of the show is still pretty bland, though.

But he's like 4 years older I'm guessing?

(The actor is 26 years old.)

If I had a 16 year old old daughter, I wouldn't even let her date 16 year olds

Ironically, if I had 16 year old lesbian daughter, she could date almost who ever she wanted.

Because as fathers, all we're worried about are drug over does, motorcycles and teen age pregnancy.

Anything else is character building.

What's the age difference between Sky and... Landon Librion is 6 years younger than Allison Miller who is a staggering 27 years old since the character she is playing must be 16 or 17?

Anyone gonna watch the episode tonight? It's most likely the last one of the whole series, so I'm planning to check it out. Has anything interesting been happening for the last few weeks?

Taylors kid is in charge, Sky is the spy for the sixers because they had her mum hostage. Taylors kid got the portal to work both ways and he's gone back to the future to to tell the evil starchamber that they can begin to rape the savage land for oil and fresh air just like the Gulf War and Spaceballs respectively.

Soooooooo dull. Even when stuff finally happens, it's so dull.

I need this show to be cancelled, I can't handle another year of this subprime bullshit.

:rommie:

Your synopses are far more entertaining, not to mention efficient, than actually plowing thru that twaddle. My bet is that FOX will wait to see how their midseason slate goes, and if it doesn't crash & burn, bye bye Terra Nova.

Or maybe it will be back with a huge budget cut and a location change to the jungles of Vancouver. They could do like Stargate, and just scatter some tropical potted plants around the forest.

Are you forced to watch at gunpoint? :guffaw:
Geez, there are far more more deserving shows out there that deserve such scorn. But since you keep posting about it, you must derive some pleasure from it.

Yeah the show is not great. Too mellow, too safe, too much kid centering. But not offensively bad. I'd rather have high-profile Sci-Fi on a network than nothing.
