Ten Forward Lounge - Miscellaneous General Chat & Welcome Thread

Thank you, eddie! Not from Halo, that I am aware, but I am glad you like it. Skål!!!

There's a cubicle-like machine just outside the lounge, stick a coin in it and it'll sober you up (and remove any residual chemicals from 'natural' sobering up, I guess).

^With an av like that, you're bound to :rommie:

Not sure if you mean that in a good way or a bad way, but I sure do like Ringworld, and I thought it was a pretty cool representation! :)

Definitely 'in a good way', but I think we're talking about two different space operas.

I was reminded about a Culture Orbital, like you'd find on the novels of Iain M. Banks.

Ah, yes...those are so cool, also. Smaller than Ringworld, and no sun to revolve around.

Guess I have some Iain Banks/Culture/Orbital/Halo catching up to do. Love it!

Still hoping for a Ringworld movie in my lifetime!

^Ah, I still haven't read the last novel from Iain Banks... it just sits there, on my bed-side table, waiting for me to open it (well, to dust it and then open it), but since he died I've been through all of Iain M. Banks' Culture-novels :bolian:

:bolian: And now I'm getting a little peckish. Bartender, a menu, please. Do you have a ploughman's lunch?

We do, but you'll have to get it from the ploughman yourself. He's six foot four and built like a brick shithouse. If you want bread and cheese that much, go ahead. I'd recommend the pasty instead.

*wanders in with a pint of Scrumpy and a large chunk of proper Cheddar cheese*

He should regain consciousness in a few hours. I distracted him with my superior knowledge of Wurzel songs and then decked him with his own plough. I knew living in Weston-super-Mare for nine years would eventually come in handy for something.

This is the only place where playing strip poker means everyone starts off naked and the losers have to get dressed. Nice twist on a classic game, guys.

In honor of mac and bbailey and the other Canucks here, happy Canada Day. Now bartender, gimme a pint of Labatt Blue and a plate of POUTINE  so large that it needs its own postal code.

So, anybody in Ten Forward drinking or watching anything particularly interesting this evening? Fun or wacky stories to tell about this past day?

Pasta recipes to astound your loved ones? Anything?

For you, eddie. :)

macloudt's crock pot (slow cooker) pasta sauce:

2 tins chopped tomatoes
2 bell peppers, whichever colour you prefer, chopped
1 courgette/zucchini, peeled and diced
3 garlic cloves, peeled and pressed
1 large or 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped

Herbs and spices: I'm one of those people who doesn't measure out herbs and spices in recipes I make frequently, so use these "to taste", as cookbooks tend to say. I'm cheap so use dried herbs.

Pinch of sugar (counteracts the acidity of the tomatoes. The sauce won't taste right without it)
Basil, oregano, salt, pepper, chilli flakes, about 3 bay leaves
Splash of red wine or red wine vinegar (the latter adds a lovely sharpness)
Squirt of tomato paste

Fry the onions and garlic for about five minutes in a splash of olive oil until the onions are translucent. Add peppers and courgettes and cook until cougettes are soft, about another five minutes. Meanwhile add the rest of the ingredients to the crock pot except the bay leaves and stir. Add the cooked veg, stir some more, and place bay leaves on top. Cook for at least 2 hours on High or 4 hours on Low.

Cooking this sauce in a crock pot blends the flavours together beautifully, but it can also be prepared entirely on the stove/hob. After cooking the veg add the rest of the ingredients and let it simmer, stirring occasionally for, oh, let's say 15 minutes, or longer if you want the flavours to blend together more. Be sure to remember how many bay leaves you added to the sauce so you know you've removed them all before serving. You don't want to bite into one of those suckers.

Serves 4-6. Freezes well. The recipe can easily be halved or doubled.

So my quest to get healthier and better myself is going good. I am only drinking 1 soda a day instead of 3-4. I walked for a full 30 minutes. :) I am drinking way more water and no booze for about a month. :bolian: I have been actively learning more about creating music and song writing.

You. Are. Glorious. :bolian:

Good luck on the self-improvement, TayLa!
