Have those Hallowe'en ghost and ghouls grabbed our Moderator and September Challenge Winner, @Michael, and stopped him from posting the new challenge thread or is it that far more nefarious thing known as Real Life interfering yet again?

Either way I'll get this contest up and running and I'll leave the voting thread to @Michael, if he has fought off those unwanted gobblers of free time by then. ;)

Sooooo, welcome to the 231st Trek BBS Fan Art Forum Challenge!

October’s theme — as voted by the community here — is “Rough Draft” and is described as …

Rough Draft
Do a pencil sketch, a scribble on a napkin, a rough rendering, a chalkboard doodle - show us the "genesis" of a Trek idea. It can be one you've done for a previous contest, or a new idea.

As the description specifically includes previously made art, I'll suspend the "created during the month of the challenge" rule for this contest. But let's encourage everyone to try to make some new art for this challenge, if possible. :)

Also, since the challenge is quite open and some might need a little inspiration >raises hand<, if anyone has suggestions as to what a "Rough Draft" could be drawn of please post your ideas in this thread.

The Rules
  • the artwork you submit should be created during the month of the challenge
  • only one final image can be submitted (although it may contain multiple views)
  • your final entry should be posted in this thread (although dedicated WIP threads are appreciated)
The winner gets to sport the golden “Fan Art Challenge Winner” badge on their profile for the following month and has the honor of hosting the next challenge. By the way, be sure to help decide on next month’s theme here.

You have until the end of Friday, November 1st to share your final entry in this thread. As usual, if you have any questions or if you need more time, just let us know in this thread. :)

Looking forward to seeing your art. Have Fun! :bolian:

 Now this made me chuckle. Thanks so much, my friend. You’re the best. :)

How about some sketches for an idea you've had that's been languishing on the back burner? Or for a finished piece that you just know is currently beyond your skill set or that will take a lot longer than the time we have?
For example, I have long been fascinated with the adorable little Oberth-class starship, and jotted down these notes and sketches last year (hastily combined in MSPaint just now). I'd love to create a set of orthographics and/or an MSD, but I don't (currently) have the skills to pull them off, so sketches and musings are the closest I'm going to get (for now).

[This is not my entry, but I will probably do something similar to this]

That's very helpful, thank you! :techman:

My main problem is sketching is usually my last resort rather than first instinct. I'm far too reliant on reference images and those "happy little accidents" that occur when I'm puttering around in art software.

Guess I'll go first and see if this works!

This is a preliminary sketch I made for a couple new sets for season 2 of my EVA-Trek series back in May, along with rough ideas for how everything would fit together on the imaginary stage for filming. The idea was that the new classroom set would be one deck up from Ten-Forward aboard the Galaxy-class USS Nerv, and would share some of the design language.

The final version of the set and the rest of the layout for Stage 18 is in my main art thread here: https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/firebirds-sketch-of-the-week-series.307901/post-14954543

As per @Cyfa's suggestion I've been seeing what I can dig up as inspiration from that quantum foam of Trek ideas that bubble around in the back on my imagination.

This one comes from a fanfic idea for a, perhaps unlikely, meshing of Urban Fantasy and Star Trek in the TOS-era. Here's my sketchy attempt at a logo:

(I cannot remember if I needed a separate thread or not... so @Michael let me know please):
You don’t. And this is a brilliant submission, thank you! Combining saucer and wing elements with a sphere … most people would think it can’t be done, but this looks imposing and elegant. Very nice! :bolian:

This is my start-to-finish of a TMP Romulan Cruiser... enjoy mates
In the very first sketch (without reading the caption), I would have sworn you were going for a Federation ship! Interesting that it's the details and not the overall shape that define it here.

Thanks always. I've always believed you can make some great ships using a sphere. It can be daunting for sure, and like all designs, sure it may have an unflattering view here or there, but so what? lol Just work through it. Bias is one of the only things that can truly hold back an artist from their art.

Indeed! Well said!

Oof! Sorry I'm late. I'd hoped to get some more sketching done (since last Sunday while in the bath...), but it was not meant to be. So, here are some ideas of how I think the Oberth-class starship could work at between 120-160 metres long.

To quote Vultan (from Flash Gordon), "Better late than never... Hahahahahahaha!"

Last call: Any late comers or can I put up the voting thread? Will wait a few more hours for any possible last minute entries and then put up the voting thread tonight. :)
