Not sure if you mean that in a good way or a bad way, but I sure do like Ringworld, and I thought it was a pretty cool representation!![]()

Definitely 'in a good way', but I think we're talking about two different space operas.
I was reminded about a Culture Orbital, like you'd find on the novels of Iain M. Banks.
And now I'm getting a little peckish. Bartender, a menu, please. Do you have a ploughman's lunch?
We do, but you'll have to get it from the ploughman yourself. He's six foot four and built like a brick shithouse. If you want bread and cheese that much, go ahead. I'd recommend the pasty instead.
For you, eddie.
macloudt's crock pot (slow cooker) pasta sauce:
2 tins chopped tomatoes
2 bell peppers, whichever colour you prefer, chopped
1 courgette/zucchini, peeled and diced
3 garlic cloves, peeled and pressed
1 large or 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped
Herbs and spices: I'm one of those people who doesn't measure out herbs and spices in recipes I make frequently, so use these "to taste", as cookbooks tend to say. I'm cheap so use dried herbs.
Pinch of sugar (counteracts the acidity of the tomatoes. The sauce won't taste right without it)
Basil, oregano, salt, pepper, chilli flakes, about 3 bay leaves
Splash of red wine or red wine vinegar (the latter adds a lovely sharpness)
Squirt of tomato paste
Fry the onions and garlic for about five minutes in a splash of olive oil until the onions are translucent. Add peppers and courgettes and cook until cougettes are soft, about another five minutes. Meanwhile add the rest of the ingredients to the crock pot except the bay leaves and stir. Add the cooked veg, stir some more, and place bay leaves on top. Cook for at least 2 hours on High or 4 hours on Low.
Cooking this sauce in a crock pot blends the flavours together beautifully, but it can also be prepared entirely on the stove/hob. After cooking the veg add the rest of the ingredients and let it simmer, stirring occasionally for, oh, let's say 15 minutes, or longer if you want the flavours to blend together more. Be sure to remember how many bay leaves you added to the sauce so you know you've removed them all before serving. You don't want to bite into one of those suckers.
Serves 4-6. Freezes well. The recipe can easily be halved or doubled.
