TBBS and treatment of women

Well, they're not associated with that in German, either, but because those tattoos are often tribals that vaguely look like antlers I think it's a very fitting term.

True enough, I was thinking that as a loanword into English it had a better resonance than the English version. It does make sense for the outline, of course. If I were to go into a tattoo shop Arschgeweih would sound a lot more appealing for the design than ass antlers.

Could re up the rating to Trek BBS? I mean, a series hasn't been on the air in 6 years. What's the chance that any fans are under 18?

Leaving aside the joky nature of this post, I'd actually prefer making this an 18 board. But that's probably because I basically only post in the non-Trek parts of the board.
I'm being somewhat-serious. How many kids are we expecting the franchise to pick up these days since it only airs sporadically on SyFy and BBC America (in the US, check local listings)?
\\

well considering there was a movie about a year and half ago and then another movie in about two years.

plus all the dvd's...

what is interesting as posters age they sometimes reveal how old they really were when they first joined.

unless the board goes to subscription only with a credit card required to join (not totally failsafe but something) looking at the board as mostly pg 13 is a better way to go.

^^ Plus the fact that nuTrek is directed at children.

But, I'm also not going to sit by and watch someone like RJ be bullied into acknowleging something that people of our generation dismissed a long time ago.
Thank you for this. :) And for this:

That's the thing tho. This isn't sexism. Sexism is being treated special (good or bad) because of your sex.

Sexism is not getting a job because you're a woman - or worse, getting a job and being expected to ... behave or perform certain functions because A) you're a woman or B) you should be grateful you got the job.

Sexism is having to wear a dress or skirt in the middle of fucking winter!

Sexism is having to be dependent on your father or husband for all of life's necessities.

No woman born after 1980 has lived in a world where sexism is prevalent. They've all been treated like princesses by their parents and think the entire world should treat them as such.

No women here are being treated any differently than women treat men. I know you've participated in the sexy man avatar week we've had in the past. If you only did it to 'get back' at men here, you completely missed the point of the exercize.
You pretty much get what I'm trying to say. And, since I've repeated myself several times now, I'll just let stand what I've already Posted.

RJ, I don't really know what to say here since we just discussed this in the Briefing Room yesterday and you said you would make a conscious effort to not portray the arguments of others as unevolved, anachronistic, and less enlightened than yours, which you've already done several times in this thread (and others unfortunately).
My bad. I apologize. I will now back away and go watch my Love, American Style DVDs. :D

I thought the point you were making (amongst others) was querying the mass use of the word tits by women. I assure you American women use it just as much as anyone else. Just because it's taboo for you doesn't mean it is for everyone. In the great scheme of things it's not a terrible word. While we're at it; this is a global board so I find it offensive that anyone who isn't American is treated like a second class citizen.

Sorry for skipping a few hundred posts. I'm just reading through this post and wanted to add that a while ago I notified on someone calling some one else a spastic. Now I found this truly offence given it was from a High School teacher as well. The person I notified on wasn't given an infraction for what ever because, and this shows the double standards of some posters about using the word tits is because: The poster in question is American and it means something else over here.

So yeah, I'm with Deckerd on this. If Americans can "get away" with calling someone a spastic, I'm sure saying tits up should be perfectly fine as well.

To be fair, it is completely unfair to start handing out infractions for words that, to the poster in question, are innocuous. I, in fact, nearly handed out an infraction for the 'spastic' remark as I found it as vile and unacceptable as, say, 'faggot', but before I did I was told that to Americans the word is perfectly acceptable and doesn't carry the same meaning as here. I actually think that on that score, this board does a good job of being fair and taking national differences into account. We had a similar discussion over the word 'twat', which had the opposite problem.

Spastic is a derogatory term for homosexual? I don't see it. But, then, I don't see the connection between "fag" and "cigarette" either.

Here in the US, spastic is referred to as someone incapable of keeping their emotions under control - usually their temper.

To be fair, the rating this board is claimed to be isn't accurate.

We're far looser than PG-13 when it comes to language, but a bit stricter when it comes to nudity. I think it has far more to do with personal preferences than a broad rule. But it's also just because it's nice to fucking curse every now and then, god damn it.

^ The word "spastic" in at least the UK and here in Australia can be used in the same derogatory fashion as the word "retard" for those with with mental or physical disability. What I think cultcross was saying was to him the term "spastic" is just as offensive as the word "faggot", not that they meant the same thing.

actually in the states most of time spastic also was an insulting term thrown at people who had physical control issues or an insult thrown at others.. the old retard insult.

though i have heard it in terms of the emotional control ie they have gone spastic it is just one of those "words" that are highly charged and insulting.

I would like to say in RJD's defense, that he & I often find ourselves on opposite sides of a debate. However at no time did I ever feel he was being disrespectful of me or of the conflicting opinion I had. Granted, I am in a different position from yours, An Officer... but I did want to say at least this much for what it's worth.

Wish I could say the same, Neroon. But while I appreciate RJ's POV on many other topics, there are certain topics - religion being one (particularly Catholicism, which seems to be a particular target, but all religion in general, really) and woman's perspective issues being another, where numerous times I felt exactly as LoB described - like I was being dismissed as backward and 'unevolved' because I did not agree with HIM. And frankly, it's insulting. And has been going on for a LONG while. However, nothing much has been done about it until now - and I applaud LoB for taking it on, because it's a tough thing. No doubt RJ means well, but I know that I've tried to explain it to him several times (from my position as a Misc poster)...without an ounce of success. So I finally just gave up and began limiting my own participation here.

I wouldn't have said anything even now - and had no intention of doing so when I came into this thread tonight, (I really HATE having to get involved since I'll probably just get creamed for my efforts, no good deed going unpunished and all that. I was just here for the popcorn, dammit! ). But since you came in specifically to validate RJ's behavior, directly and specifically to An Officer, who was offended by it...then in fairness, I really felt obligated to, in turn, validate the feelings of An Officer, Kestra, and others who are apparently experiencing the same frustration that I have experienced in the past. And which has kept me, for the most part, from participation in pretty much any thread involving religion (particularly Catholicism) posted in this forum in recent months.

Okay, so now I've done my bit for fairness...and since I don't want to get drawn into this on any kind of a 'micro' level, I'll back on out of here now. No more popcorn for me. :( Anyone who wants to yell at me will have to do so via PM. :p

The term spastic is the Victorian word for someone suffering from cerebral palsy. That's why it's as unacceptable as calling someone a mongol. You may resume normal service now.

I was scouting around wikipedia and found something that made me laugh, because I am a bad person:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spastic_%28Transformers%29

I'm amazed that it got as far as actually being announced, talk about dropping the ball. Cultural misunderstandings aside, the marketing team at Hasbro should probably be clued up enough to know if they are about to release a toy that is going to horribly offend a large part of their customer base

I hope I've never offended or creeped out anyone here. I think I'm a fairly low-key guy; in my six years here I don't think I've ever even received a friendly warning from a mod. My basic philosophy is just to treat others how you'd like to be treated. If you want people to be respectful, then you need to treat them with respect, too. We're all here on TBBS because we chose to be here (right?), so let's just live and let live, and try to keep in mind that this place is supposed to be fun. :techman:

Well, until at least the mid to late 90s the US was freely using the word "fanny" without much consideration for its meaning in other English speaking countries, so I can't say I'm terribly surprised something like that would slip through.

At least they took notice and didn't push the toy out into shops.

There you go with your extraneous vowels again. Terribly inefficient. ;)

Don't worry, I figured you were just goofing around, that's why I included the smiley. It's all good. :techman:
