Taylor Swift Is Racist!

No I don't watch it, but I've always had a fondness for country music. Though I don't follow it and only listen to a few old Dolly favorites now and then.

No Dolly is a country star who went on to be a movie star.

I didn't know she was that short! But I'm sure she is still taller than me any time she leaves the house because of fabulous heels.

Oh I just remembered a movie I loved years ago, that one about Loretta Lynn. Coal Miner's Daughter. "I love squirrel, don't you love squirrel?" Now I want to see it again, I LOVED that movie.

Yes, I know the music came first, but to me 9 to 5 the movie is more important than all her discography put together.

15 inch heels, I suspect kept her secret. :)

It's about seeing the Movie then.

Then is good, but now is just sad.

PC is supposed to be awesome, right?

No one thinks that, but we have to admit that it's a necessary evil.

We don't, but it's safer not to rock the boat.

Even if all it's really done is prove social Darwinism as assholes develop verbal camouflage to hide their offensiveness.

But I think I just noticed a proof that PC is bad.

Substituting a P with a C or vice-versus turns a rapist into a racist or a racist into rapist.

This is all you can hope to gain from a stern loyalty to the the tenets of Political Correctness.

Our world is a wad of filth.

So being a man of very little brain is an excuse?

There are only two kinds of assholes, those that know they are assholes and those that think they are right.

You obviously meant to type bran, not brain.

But there's more to making a healthy shit than balancing your grains.

Especially at our age.

This is why I eat All Bran every day at breakfast. I recently discovered that by dissolving the All Bran with boiling water and mashing it into a slurry before adding the yogurt the effect is.. alarmingly more effective. Apparently I am preventing all kinds of cancers even better now!

I was going to post this in one of the food threads but I couldn't quite figure out how to work it into the conversation. Now I don't have to.

I discovered this because I had my wisdom teeth ripped out and eating All Bran was like eating knives.

I stopped buying milk the day I left home.

I was all about toast.

(I don't know the context, but I remember microwaving icecream once because we needed milk quickly for some reason.)

I read a true story once that was during WWII or some other shit time where the writer remembered how there was nothing left to eat at home but some milk and a small amount of flour and sugar. Her mother boiled this all up together into a sweet white sauce and told the children that it was a very special treat, it was hot ice cream. And they all loved it.

J, you are smarter than this. What you said here is basically a bunch of privilege-denying, culture-erasing bullshit.

I knew that was coming. I just knew it, but no, this isn't about privilege, this is about music, and before the argument begins, I'm heading it off by saying I'm not going to argue with you about it. Music is music. It's not black, or white, and anyone can make it, anyone can share it, and they can express it however they like.

Sure. But music isn't made in a void. Music is made within a cultural context. And music is for an audience. Written with an audience in mind. Either for a broad appeal--like Swift's work, or for a more select audience, like Tom Waits or Blind Lemon Jefferson.

Certainly artists can grab work from other cultures and make them their own, hopefully in new and exciting ways. But, to pull without understanding the cultural context... that's either pretty naive or self-centered.

To say it is universal, is both correct and incorrect at the same time.

A Dutch band released an album a couple of years ago where for every song they went to another country to record a sang with local artists, the non-Dutch parts where written and performed by the local artists...
It became the band's best selling album to date...

3 songs from the album Umoja by the band Blof

Music is universal, styles and instruments can be mixed and matched...
