Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien developing new live-action Trek series

In the original Macross, ‘protoculture’ was a term referring to an actual past culture of humanoids of which both the humans and Zentradi were descended from. In Robotech, protoculture was some kind of fuel which powered the Robotechnology and cultivated from the Invid flower of life.
The original definition definitely made more sense as a name.

In the original GI JOE cartoon from the 80's, the Cobra pilots died in plane crashes after being shot down (When the series was syndicated in the US, they all ejected and parachuted to safety! ).

That's never happening, due to the way TV works now. And from what I understand, actors are very happy not to be worked into the ground anymore. The 90s aren't coming back.
Network shows survived all the way to the mid 2010's.
The way Hollywood is burning through cash to chase the Company+ dreams is not sustainable long term.
Apple spent $150M on Wolfs, Lucasfilm spent $150M for 8 episodes of The Acolyte, then there are the expensive graveyard of shows and movies on Netflix.
They could just spent a fraction of those budgets on network shows and got better ROI in the end.

The fact that they edited together three separate anime series that had nothing to do with each other to make Robotech was nothing short of amazing. Same with Voltron.

The history of dubbing anime in the States never ceases to amaze me - how we went from wholesale rejiggering of multiple shows into something completely different, the massive recuts/rewriting of Sailor Moon by DiC in the early 90s, then the weirdness that was 4Kids, to the "golden age" of dubs from the late 90's to pre-pandemic, and now where there's more literal dubs versus attempting to localize.
Starblazers I found was interesting in that they used the actual main theme music (though with different lyrics) from the Japanese version. That was rare, especially when you get to the 90s and early 2000s where dubbing companies usually just made all new music. I'm looking at you Dragon Ball Z.

Sailor Moon was funny, because in the original Japanese version two of the characters were a couple, in the English Dub they turned them into cousins but they kept some of the scenes where the animation implied they were close.

In regards of weird condensed editing, that reminds me of the first English Digimon Movie, it was actually 3 different movies squished and edited together, adding stuff in the dubbing to connect them when IIRC they had little or no story connections in the original Japanese.

They're actually finally releasing all 3 movies as they were in Japanese on Blu-Ray this month. Most of the original English Dub cast is back for the new English dubs of the three movies as well.

When was the last time there was a successful space show on one of the networks? Hell, has there even been one which lasted more than one season since Enterprise ended? Besides The Orville, that is, as that may have aired on a network for its first two seasons but still followed the streaming production model in most other respects.

Space shows are not going to last on network television anymore.
The campaign got its own protest song…

That song is terrible.

Oh ... I remember it now.
Must have blocked that conversation from my memory or my senility is just working on overtime nowadays.
Don't remember adding much to that conversation, other than probably to express the foolhardiness of the goal.
I also now remember back to the occasion when that was also attempted with ENTERPRISE getting cancelled.
Don't think we had a silly nickname for that though, it was just "SAVE ENTERPRISE", if I'm remembering correctly.

Heh ... it must be something really dumb if one can't even find anything about it with Google.

The beginning:
This is a very bad idea. Discovery is widely considered to be the worst Star Trek show, partly because of its detached setting in the 32nd century.

Why should anyone be interested in the successor of a show with a median imdb score of 5,6 (Disco season 4)? Usually, artistically mediocre tv shows don’t get sequels..

With Kurtzman at the helm, we can expect even more dragged out filler episodes.

Treks future lies in concepts like Picard season 3. 32nd century Star Trek combined with badly written coming of age stories, i am going to pass.

They need to get rid off Kurtzman and let Matalas redevelop the franchise from scratch. Star Trek will lose its last bit of relevance if the franchise doesn’t manage to step up their game.

After watching 7 episodes of Picard season 3, i almost believed that Star Trek has a future.

The Middle:
Quite the opposite, the Kurtzman gang released all sorts of mediocre Star Trek streaming content. Their artistic decisions diluted the franchise in a most painful way. We have to stop them, we will stop them.

Laugh for yourself, Sir. The truth is: social media matters, shitstorms matter, imdb scores matter, especially to a company like CBS, which aims to attract their shows to as many people as possible.

Forums like these on the other hand don’t have any influence on anything

We must not let them ruin this franchise any further.
My plan for a brighter Star Trek future:

- Social Media Havoc:
Find likeminded Trekkies with financial capabilities. Invest into shitstorms. Let them rain upon the Kurtzman empire.

- Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions:
Stop buying Star Trek products, stop watching Star Trek on streaming portals until they change their minds. Publicly divest your Star Trek memorabilia, make some noise. Sanction everyone, who was responsible for pitching Starfleet Academy.

- Friends and Family:
Tell everyone how disappointed you are in the artistic decisions of the Kurtzman empire. Explain to everyone what has happened to Star Trek and why it is important to turn the tide.

You ain't seen nothing yet. This movement has just begun:

Stop Luve Stupis!

The end, revealing the whole thing as a stupid AI prank and experiment in AI prompts:
To wrap this up. The Stop Luve Stupis text was generated after importing the official artwork

into Dall-E, and adding the prompt: “exchange text with Stop Alex Kurtzman”:

Don’t ask me, why it generated that text…

All of the campaign texts were created on the new ChatGpt 4.0 model within one (still running) session. As were most of my replies.

If you are interested, you can find all prompts as a yt video at

I did most of the stuff, while commuting on my iphone. GPT 4.0 has drastically advanced in terms of contextual recognition. I am pretty sure that in a few years, a “campaign” like this will be auto-deployable, including all provisioning steps for the setup and maintenance of social media accounts.

In real life, i am an IT Security consultant and i truly believe, that the emergence of multimodal language models will drastically change our society. This technology will have profound impact on our everyday lives, no matter if we like it or not.

It wasn’t my intention to insult anyone, see it as a prolonged April fool’s joke, combined with awareness for AI supported agendas. With a few prompt tweaks, the current GPT 4.0 model will already pass the Turing Test. In a few years from now, not even experts will be able to differentiate between AI and man made texts.

Silly writing campaigns have been part of Trek since the 60s.

It's ridiculous when you think about it.
Are you kidding right now? "Silly/ridiculous writing campaigns" brought Trek back in the form of TMP (originally Phase II) in the 70's and has been going (relatively) strong ever since with periodic ebbs and flows. New content is always either being shown or in some stage of production.

None of it would have happened without it. Unless you're okay with never having had any kind of Trek after TOS? If that's the case, then why are you on this forum making such patently absurd statements, as surely you never wanted TrekBBS to exist either, so we could have discussions about it?

Seriously, man, sometimes I see these posts from you and I wonder WTF? Where does this shit come from?

Unless this is another one of your "jokes"?

Quick reminder - Jokes really need to make some attempt at humor.

Literally every person I've ever seen at a convention involved with the production going back to the early 80's credits DC Fontana and the campaign of mass-quantity mail-ins for bringing back Trek.

I mean, unless there is an official statement somewhere contravening that well-documented observation to say they were all talking out their ass, I'd say the opposite would be the myth, giving credit solely to the Paramount suits for having the foresight to unilaterally make Trek's return. Or maybe even Gene.

Taking into consideration the vitriol generated between Gene and DC during those years, one could very easily postulate that the "myth" myth originated from the "Great Bird" himself. He loved salting the fields of other folks' achievements when it came to Trek (Franz Joseph for the blueprints and Tech Manual, TAS - which DC was directly involved with, Alexander Courage - for adding lyrics to the main theme instrumental, Matt Jefferies for his design work on the original Enterprise which Gene added his name to after-the-fact, etc). This, too, is a well documented pattern of behavior for him. What's one more to give him sole credit of the property? If you tell the same lie long enough it eventually becomes truth.
