News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Color me underwhelmed. Primarily for two reasons.

I've never been that interested in an Academy series.

I'm not that interested in the Discovery timeframe. 25th Century would be preferable.

Oh well. I'll give it a shot but not the type of series I was hoping for.

Eh. Everybody knows that Kurtzman was fired years ago
Didn't that basically happen to his buddy Bob Orci? Orci was so prevalent in the Trek world once and his sudden departure without fanfare was more stealthy than a Section 31 coverup

This is a continuation of the worst-rated Star Trek Discovery season 4 episode.

A parody made real.

Yup. There goes my interest in being a Star Trek fan after Picard S3 ends. Happy we got one last hurrah with that season.

In a way, it's a relief. I don't want to be a defender of this franchise when they greenlight crap like this.

Tilly spinoff  Showrunner of CW's Nancy Drew.. Tawny Newsome's crude, lowbrow 'comedy'..

Sad day for Star Trek.

I always felt like a Starfleet academy would be a perfect show for the CW (well that was until they got bought out and their content got whacked.)

IT'S HAPPENING!!!!!

The Smallville/Buffy Trek I've wanted for decades is HAPPENING AAAAHSHDIEIR9G9VOCO K K

This legit sounds like something I would watch the hell out of. Throw in Veronica Mars and it's binge time.

Yeah he would get into flame wars in the Trek Movie comments with fans who were pissed about STID.

Nice guy, but he couldn't handle the heat the way Kurtzman can.

Incidentally I'm squealing like a little girl in excitement over this. This show is totally my jam.

The only good news is SNW is getting a Season 3.

If they had announced the academy series set in 2320 or 2330, that "inter-series" time block with the monster maroons, Romulan intrigue, etc..I'd be on it like bees on flowers.

The 32nd century with the bullshit that Discovery has established in that era and all that is just a massive meh. The aesthetic is shit, the ships are crap, the whole political situation is meh.

Just ..no

We basically got that concept done as well as it can be, with Star Trek 2009.

Something tells me we won't be getting a lead as charming or likable as Chris Pine for this.

Feels like major money wasted, that could have been spent on a better Trek series.

Picard S3 (as confirmed by Chris Monfette) had a very limited and reduced budget. Hence all the bottle show episodes.

P+ was supposed to be trimming the fat, but greenlighting this undercuts it all.

I remember in one of the Trekmovie comments Orci claimed to know why Nimoy turned on Shatner before his death, saying that he can only reveal that it wasn't related to the speculated use of Nimoy footage in Shatner's documentary. Given that Nimoy's own son claims not to know the reason for the feud, I'm finding this unlikely now.

Orci also posted some bizarre conspiracy theories on twitter, I think (not sure to repeat them here since they might be found offensive). I hope he's all right mentally...

I'm excited about this, even if it was expected after DIS S4. Hopefully, Tilly is back, otherwise, I'm taking names and phone numbers at Paramount+.

Is it time to torture poor T'Bonz about a forum yet? :rommie:

This is a very bad idea. Discovery is widely considered to be the worst Star Trek show, partly because of its detached setting in the 32nd century.

Why should anyone be interested in the successor of a show with a median imdb score of 5,6 (Disco season 4)? Usually, artistically mediocre tv shows don’t get sequels..

With Kurtzman at the helm, we can expect even more dragged out filler episodes.

Treks future lies in concepts like Picard season 3. 32nd century Star Trek combined with badly written coming of age stories, i am going to pass.

They need to get rid off Kurtzman and let Matalas redevelop the franchise from scratch. Star Trek will lose its last bit of relevance if the franchise doesn’t manage to step up their game.

After watching 7 episodes of Picard season 3, i almost believed that Star Trek has a future.

Well fuck. DISCOVERY season 6 here we come. Shaking my head on the opportunity cost. At the very least balance out having one show oversampling the Tumblr demographic with a show targeting the legacy fan demographic, like I dunno, STAR TREK: LEGACY?

Interestingly enough, Alex Kurtzman is listed as a co-showrunner along with Noga Landau, but a writer with limited credits named Gaia Violo wrote the pilot.

And, the DISCOVERY/SNW line producers being listed as EPs all but confirm another shot in Toronto series.

I guess Josh Schwartz & Stephanie Savage (GOSSIP GIRL, Marvel's RUNAWAYS), originally attached when this was first mentioned, have moved on.

I think the fact they're calling out that the Academy has "re-opened" basically means it's the 32nd century.

It'll be interesting to see a 32nd century San Francisco.
We don't know that it'll actually be in San Francisco. Indeed, 32nd century Starfleet Academy could be at a new space-based facility, which could provide a plausible means to have the cadets in space every week while also doing their studies.

Also, we did see 32nd century San Francisco briefly in Disco S3.
