Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien developing new live-action Trek series

The linked article is to a history of sitcoms, nothing about animation, even though "Animated sitcom" is linked at the bottom of the page:

And look at that descriptor:

An animated sitcom is a subgenre of a television sitcom that is animated instead of being filmed live-action, and is generally made or created for adult audiences in most cases.
I guess. To me, sitcoms means "live action." :shrug:I am not a fan of animation, maybe that's what sets me aside?

Cartoons = western animated shows intended to make viewers laugh.
Anime = animated shows from Japan, usually serious, usually serializd.
You're welcome.

There ARE comedy animes out there (Super Milk Chan, Asobi Asobase, Zombieland Saga, Zom 100).

Pigeonholing anime is like reducing American animation to Bugs Bunny. There's a LOT you're missing out on.

Please tell me you're kidding. This is one of those YT joke vids, right?

I said mostly, not always. Right now, I've got a few animated shows I'm already watching:
Jurassic World: Chaos Theory (S2)
Primal (S1)
Shaun the Sheep (S4)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987 – S3)
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft (new)
X-Men (S1)
Will Smith slapped the shit out of Chris Rock. I'm good.

The content of the Gargoyles episode "Deadly Force" would be considered mature content even by today's standards. Hell, they might not even get away with "Deadly Force" in 2024.
Even at the time, it was considered extremely controversial, and indeed, reruns of it had to be reanimated to remove the blood, though the blood was still visible in other episodes which used footage from Deadly Force in its Previously On recaps.

And no, they definitely couldn't do such an episode today, among the reasons why is one weird rule these days that says you can't have guns which shoot bullets in a children's show, though you can have guns which fire lasers.

They are not wrong, they are entitled to believe "cartoons are for kids."
Just as you are entitled to be an "adult who still watches cartoons."
They are wrong because there are animated shows explicitly made for adults. They are not designed for kids. That's the whole point.
Most people I know my age would see LD as a show for the middle schoolers.
And that's their right. It's incorrect, since the writers of the show have said as much but they can be wrong.
What is the appeal of this show to you?
The characters. That's the appeal of most shows. Not genre, not format, not live action, not animated, not target audience. You give me interesting characters and I'll enjoy it.

Animation as a whole is still mostly aimed at children, so they are not wrong. Shows like Simpsons and Family Guy are more the exception.

It's not incorrect. They are allowed to believe what they want - fee country.

For me, it's premise first, then characters. There are some shows with brilliant actors, great characters, but I just can't, because I don't care for the premise.

There was a whole channel dedicated to adult animated shows. Hardly the exception. Hasn't been for like 20 years.

They are allowed to believe incorrectly. And yes, we have fees in this country.

That's fair. I'm a character first person. Premise is up there but probably third. Story second. Format 4th, ish.

But I still feel like that's the minority compared to the sheer about of animations that have come out over the decades.

That's just messed, come on now.

For me: premise first, story second, characters third, format... format doesn't determine if I watch or not. That's more... that's more in the sense of shows I am already watching. Do I want to watch something true (docuseries), dramatic, funny, or animated. It depends on my mood, ya know?

Having not analyzed the numbers I will simply say I don't know.

When I can demonstrate animated shows that are not cartoons and are specifically for adults then yes it is wrong to say that animation is just for kids. That's factually not correct. Personal belief has little to do with that.

I am aware of the mood aspect, though that rarely dictates my preferences of watching material.

I think the only "adult" cartoons that I've watched (friend's house doesn't count) is Rick and Morty. That was is beyond messed up, but funny. The other is Futurama, but I got bored after 2 episodes. Does Primal count? What about the following anime? Cowboy Bebop: bought the Blu-ray so I can see the whole series. Loved it. Erased: VERY dark 12-parter. Neon Genesis Evangelion: loved it, but the ending... WTF? I have yet to see the 2 films that tie it off. I think that's it.

Fair enough. I like to watch shows and films that suit my mood. I have a 12-shelf video collection, so it gets easy to find something there or on one of my streamers that suits my mood.

Yeah, I had a friend who thoroughly enjoy animated works, from Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, to Sealab, to Aquateen Hunger Force, to Space Ghost, among several others. There was a whole channel dedicated to it because of the Simpsons popularity as a adult animated sitcom. That's the whole point.

Just because its outside our individual experience does not mean it does not exist.

I certainly didn't enjoy most of them that my friend did.

Regardless of all this, I think Trek could pull off a sitcom without much fuss. And if it fails, too bad, so sad, life moves on. That's the larger part of my attitude towards shows; they don't all have to be for me. In fact, the majority isn't. But, I welcome people to try things that inspire them to make them.

That's the beauty of diversity.

In the original GI JOE cartoon from the 80's, the Cobra pilots died in plane crashes after being shot down (When the series was syndicated in the US, they all ejected and parachuted to safety! ).
