Tarek's Projects

The Black Hawk about to enter a jump portal. I decided that in this universe, FTL is accomplished thru jump gates primarily and most reliably, but ships can generate an on-demand jump point wherever they are, although these cannot go as far or with the same precision as gate to gate travel.

I modified a previous artistic rendering of a temporal-spatial rift that I made to act as the jump portal here.

Working on the Stargate effects. Mostly consists of various combinations of swirl effect and a glass tiling effect to add a shimmer. I started adding new backrounds. In the case of the brighter ones I added a background right behind the stargate while still in SketchUp. Then when imported to Gimp to add the effects there is a background other than stars to work with. A brighter background yields a brighter effect which often used in stargates uses in other universes.

I had been just adding starfield images to behind models to make them appear in space. Then I used the space visible thru the opening in the stargate. But the first and third ones above were done differently. I added a bathroom or kitchen tile template that comes pre loaded with SketchUp. I stuck it behind the gate and then I edited the tile to make the tiles 120x larger than normal. The result is below. Then I can upload in gimp to swirl those colors around and then run the glass tile effect to give the swirly tiles an added shimmer. That's what you see in that 3rd image above.

It is.

Instead of a ball of plasma that V'ger used to "digitize" things with, I could see a Hoberman sphere opening up a lens with that effect above.

That image makes me think your ship would become a craft from a video game upon passing through.

Thank you. This was made by switching to a water background instead of the tiles that I initially thought would respond better to the glass tiling effect. But the water image did better. I increased the granularity of the water by 130x magnification. Then swirled the water, added glass tiling and changed the lighting to brighten and highlight the bluish-white swirl areas so that they would seem more "energetic". End result was a better FX scene then I have ever made, although that is a low bar admittedly.

Interesting ideas about the sphere and what happens after going thru it. Does the front part of the ship start coming out of the "arrival gate" even as the stern of the ship hasnt passed the "departure gate" horizon? Or is it like you suggest? Or something else. I dont picture a long trip thru hyperspace or some similar realm. It's a fairly quick "jump" I think. But it enters entirely into and thru the "departure gate" before it "jumps" through to the arrival gate. So I dont think it is half in one and half out the other. A digital like "space" is an interesting idea.
