SyFy cancels Eureka

The shows over.

Let the good actors move on and the bad actors starve.

I still can't believe that Zoe ran away to make the bomb Hank with Kelsey Grammer.

What about the Star freaking Gate crossover?

Was that touted as an idea?

Would have been easy.

Just have Sheriff Carter mentioning a cousin in the Air Force...

:rommie: :bolian:

last shot of Eureka:

henry Deacon powers up the repared Wormhole device that he repaired in an attempt to get back to their original timeline...

Cue Stargate activation in Cheyanne mountain... ;)

:guffaw:

I'm sorry to see the show go, I enjoyed it, although I wasn't following it closely.

re the rising costs of cast/crew - don't these people care about what they're working on? If I was on a show that was looking to be renewed I'd take a paycut in order to help out...

Are we absolutely sure it was the pay that was the problem? Maybe they realized that they cut Farsape after only 4 seasons and thought "D'oh! We forgot to cancel it last season. Let's do it now!"

What's the phone number for Bonnie Hammer's boss (or at least the office). I wanna protest! Also, who are main advertisers for Eureka. Let'em know that our money goes when Eureka does!

From Wil Wheaton's G+:
ICYMI, here's Amy Berg on Eureka's cancellation: "Everyone is asking why. It's simple, really. We are the network's golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy's new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn't make the numbers work."
:wtf: Compared with shows like Stargate and Galactica, I don't see how this is an expensive show.

This is the same reason why ABC had to cancel Legend of the Seeker in 2010. Tribune filed for bankruptcy and decided not to renew its contract to produce the show for another season. ABC shopped it around but the minimum cost they knew they needed to continue producing the show was not an amount that other networks (notably, Syfy and the CW) were willing to pay. It was entirely a numbers game, despite everyone loving the show from the studio, the network, the cast and crew, and ratings being fairly respectable. In the end, the almighty dollar sign ruled the day.

The thing you have to understand is that it costs a certain amount of money to produce a television series. If the company that pays for the show to be produced goes from making money to losing money on production, I can certainly understand the business decision to end production. It sucks for creative reasons and for the fans, but business-wise it makes sense.

Per Berg's tweet, it's about making the show profitable for Syfy. Galactica was also the network's "golden child" until it stopped making money for them and was summarily ended too.

It really sucks for the cast and crew of Eureka to be out of work. I never got into the show, but I feel for them and for the fans.

I dunno, I was just commenting on what other people had said in the thread about costs rising after a few seasons due to cast/crew wages going up..

My guess is the actors are the most costly aspect. Every year that cost goes up, I'm sure.

Yearly raises are the norm for series regulars. Also the norm are five year contracts. Both factors probably contributed to the cancellation.

Wish I could get yearly raises @ my job! :klingon:

Anyway this sucks, down to W13 & Haven. Can we all cancel the network formally known as scifi?

However true this may be, you're forgetting the show's licensing fees. Those increase every year too. It's likely a major factor here as well. NBC axed the original Law & Order because they probably figured it would be cheaper (in terms of licensing fees anyway) to start a new show - Law & Order LA - instead of renewing the 20-year-old original series. Similar situation.

Also, there seems to be a confusion in the thread about the "high cost" referring only to the actors' salaries as the reason for the cancellation, when really, what the "cuts" all the news reports are referring to are more than likely referring to overall budget cuts.

I'm sure the high costs are not only due to the actor's salaries. In every 'making of' book of television shows I've ever read as time goes on the salary of the actors are the highest cost though.

Except the license fee counts as revenue for the producer, not a cost. And in this case we're talking NBCU everything. It sounds like the creative people tried to keep Eureka, but the number it would take for SyFy to keep airing the show was too low to produce the show.

I thought this would have been posted by now, I heard about it last night.

Anyway, Jaime Paglia tweeted that SyFy and Universal have agreed to allow the Eureka team to do one more episode, so they can have a proper finale.

^ Considering how many of my favourite shows got totally screwed by their networks, I'm very happy we'll get at least one additional episode.
