Swearing in Star Trek - Steve Shives

When Star Trek f-bombs every week then I'll be surprised.

Until then, as Steve notes in his video in a point I happen to agree with, it feels more like pearl clutching, Also, it feels like a lot of hyperbole of what swearing is actually being done.

Honestly, I didn't notice her using a swear word until it was brought to my attention. In Goodfellas, they say it like a hundred times (or more?) so what's the big deal? Other movies make Goodfellas sound like a victorian nursery rhyme.

You can't be surprised by something that happens every week that's kinda antinomic.
Sure I can. I do it all the time.

Also, as I said, there is this treatment of Trek's swearing, especially in new Trek, that it is occurring far more frequently than it is. It isn't.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if they did it all the time as long as it sounds natural. In TNG it's not so much the lack of swearing that bothers me as much as the odd way that they express some things.

When was it used in season 3?

That's interesting to me, I was pretty much entirely on her side in that scene, swearing and all. Then again I never liked Picard (the show and the character) or TNG all that much, so maybe that contributed.
I’m not sure now. I thought there was, but now I’m not sure.

The only time swearing bothered me was Tilly's "This is really fucking cool" line in season 1 of Disco, because of how awkwardly done the scene was, with her saying the line and everyone pausing and staring at her. The whole thing just felt like a "franchise's first F-Bomb" moment. None of the swearing on Picard bothered me at all, in fact the line "sheer fucking hubris" is all kinds of cool.

Personally, I think Tilly's swearing sounds way more natural than Admiral "fucking hubris", the latter sounds forced. Or maybe it's that Tilly's actress is more talented which justifies why she has a recurrent role and the other only gets a couple of scenes.

I have to disagree, it makes sense in context. Picard was being an arrogant ass in that scene.
Agree to half agree half disagree lol. Picard was asking a LOT. However, if she would have countered in respect to his years of service to allow him to be a guest on a ship that was sent to investigate, it would have seemed fair.

It's like spit in the face of someone who used to give you ten thousand dollar a month because he hasn't done that for several years... Picard saved the Earth several times but a few words in an interview cancel everything, don't they?

Morality: Don't wait to cash your check at Starfleet because it may not remain solvent for very long.

I love the idea that Picard is completely innocent in all of his interactions with Starfleet. He walks away after not getting his way, goes and does an interview shaming Starfleet, then goes in and demands to be reinstated to pursue a perceived conspiracy theory that ended up being true. Sorry, Picard doesn't get a blank check just because of past efforts. Recent behaviors count for something as well.

Sorry, my bad. "You are the great Picard. Of course you can have whatever you want, as well as my job." Picard was presumptuous.

Admiral Clancy's swearing made sense.

Humans in 2399 aren't going to be that much different from humans in 2021. Her swearing was more organic than Tilly's in DSC and even hers didn't really bother me.

Humans may not be that different, but language sure will be. This was written 380 years ago:

For this, since its depra∣vation in Adam, perceiving it felfe altogether emptied of any good, doth now catch after every new thing, conceiving that possibly it may finde satisfaction among some of its fellow creatures. But our ene∣mie the devill (who strives still to pervert our gifts, and beat us with our owne weapons) hath so contriv'd it, that any truth doth now seeme distastefull for that very reason, for which errour is entertain'd.. No∣velty. For let but some upstart here∣sie be set abroach, and presently there are some out of a curious hu∣mour; others, as if they watched an occasion of singularity, will take it up for canonicall, and make it part of their creede and profession;

And how long as "fuck" been around?
