Swearing in Star Trek - Steve Shives

can we makes that no one dies, too as dying is bäh?
Ah come on mate, you know that wasn't what I was saying.

I've defended swearing quite voiceiferously in this thread also.

I disagree wholeheartedly with the guy who wanted to take swearing out entirely, but it got me thinking of an approach to writing that is designed to avoid gratuitousness and thought I'd share it.

why would you want to avoid it in the first place? real people swear a lot especially when they are in dire straits which is exactly where we want them on tv - would you watch a guy on a lawnmower having a totally uneventfull day of work? that guy will probably swear at an anoying bee at around 15:26:48, though.

Yeah, I agree with you entirely mate - it was just a case of bringing up the writing technique that I was familiar with.

My point was still to include swearing but the technique is purely to avoid swearing for the sake of it and instead to make sure it feels natural with the character.

I've seen Anchorman.
;)
I haven't. I've heard of it, and I now understand that the reference to the reproductive anatomy of a sasquatch comes from that movie (though the Google search said nothing about the context) but that's just about it.

And as to stand-up comics, we must all remember that Bob Newhart can have an audience ROFLTFAO with implied swearing.

Newhart is an exception, not the rule. ;)
I luv that guy. :)

Many years ago, I built a model DC-3, painted in livery I'd designed for "The Mrs. Grace L. Ferguson Airline and Storm Door Company." Pale pink trim, with a caricature of an elderly woman in a purple dress and red aviator helmet (because she would just have to be a "red-hatter") on the tail. And a storm door with wings painted around the main hatch.

I sent Mr. Newhart a set of pictures of the model, and I got a very nice letter in response.
