It kind of makes sense, this change. After watching Anakin and Palpatine's story throughout the prequel trilogy, it would be strange for Vader to just wordlessly chuck Palps in a bottomless pit (there does seem to be a proliferation of bottomless pits in SW). If you want the six films to match up thematically with each other, this is a positive change.I have never sat down and done a marathon Episodes I-VI rewatch, despite already owning all six films on DVD. I look forward to finally giving it a shot on Blu Ray. I do wonder though, if a first time viewer who watches in chronological (rather than production) order will bother watching past Episode I?
Don't get me, or anyone, started on how watching the PT first neuters the "drama" of the OT.
As for the "Noooo." It's one of those cases where saying nothing at all is more powerful than saying something. That's one of the reasons Luke's Wilhelm scream as he dives off of the catwalk inside Cloud City was so derided. It took a moment where Luck selected to
die over accepting his "father's" request to join him in conquering the galaxy. Instead of just taking it like a man and diving into the unknown he screams "Nooooooo" either suggesting he was answering his father's request or simply unsatisfied with the result that jumping off of a semi-secure position over large opening lead to a great fall.
So now instead of Vader "putting it all together" in his head and electing to take down the man who has taken so much of him and silently chucking him into a similar unknown we have him demonstrating this dissatisfaction with a "Noooo!" It runs the power, drama, and visual of that moment.
Think of it as being like in a drama movie where the "hero" has to kill his best friend or the woman he loves in order to stop the bad guy, or when because the bad guy ended up being that person he trusted/loved. What's more powerful? The hero showing some sense of emotion over his choice (something Vader's actor is able to do in spite of not seeing his face) and silently killing his friend/lover and then walking away or the hero shouting "Nooooo!!!!!" and then shooting that person?
Emotions and actions can carry a lot further than words can and "Nooooooo!" is very over-used in film as it is.
Shit, I'm sort of surprised Lucas isn't going to insert a montage/memory flash back of Darth Vader recalling everything that has happened between him and The Emperor and "putting all of the pieces together" to see everything that has really happened over the last couple decades.
"Nooooooo" takes a lot of the power and drama out of the moment and reduces it to something much less with something very, very played and trite. "Noooooo" in any context just doesn't work anymore. And it's also pointless, needless, addition to a movie that's worked fine without it for almost 30 freaking years. Why add it
now?!
