Spoilers "Superman & Lois" Season 1 spoiler discussion!

Um, I don't think anyone has said this yet, but did anyone else recognize Martha's doctor? :)

Dr. Frye is listed as being played by Chy Liu, who has no other IMDb credits.

I liked the show. Hoechlin seems young though to have 2 teenage sons after what seems like should be years as Superman before marrying Lois. But maybe Crisis...

As I mentioned before, Supergirl established that Kal-El was born in 1976, so he's 45.

One gripe about the pilot, why is the internet router in the barn and not the house? Why so far out of reach?

Maybe the house is in a wi-fi dead spot or something. A small town might not have as many cell towers as a larger city and might have spotty coverage.

Superman looking young is intentional. They said back in Supergirl that Kryptonians age at a slower rate, which is a understatement since in the comics we know Superman is still around a million months from now

Well, there are many different comics continuities by now, and they disagree on Superman's aging process. He was treated as effectively immortal in the Bronze Age (about 1970 to 1985/Crisis), but other versions have given him a lifespan just a bit longer than a human's (e.g. in Kingdom Come he had gray hair just a few decades in the future). And of course a TV adaptation is free to define the rules in its own way.

I think one of the Future State comics that ended last week followed the House of El hundreds of years in the future, and Kal El was still around as head of the family.

He was around in DC One Million too.

As I said, there are many different Superman continuities both in and out of comics, and different ones treat his aging in different ways.

One gripe about the pilot, why is the internet router in the barn and not the house? Why so far out of reach? Seems like poor writing to me.

Well, if i had a farm I'd want to get wifi as far out into the fields as possible, and without repeaters that means high up and centrally located. And it has to be inside if it isn't waterproof. So up high in the barn works for me.

I doubt Ma Kent cared about the internet.

Clark probably put it in to improve her lifestyle, and she ignored it.

(At least that's my experience with my parents.)

Zoom or facebook messenger... Clark was making a toll-call to talk to his mum because she couldn't master Zoom or Facebook... And that's why she was going to need a third mortgage eventually.

A three hundred dollar conversation about what the cows are up to.

Zoom you old hag, ZOOM!

Over in the Flash thread, I saw that some of the Flash actors were talking about their Zoom conferences, and how they liked Zoom. Can they hear themselves, or did they forget that Zoom was the bad guy in season two?

Oh I know, you mostly provided older examples, so I just wanted to share a current one.

Professor Zoom <> ZOOM App. ;)

In the comics, professor Zoom, is another name for Eobard Thawne, the reverse Flash.

ON the CW TV Show, Hunter Zolomon, was pretending to be Jay Garrick the Flash of Earth 2, but he was actually a villain called Zoom, who half the time sounded like Tony Todd, which may have been Blackface.

Wow.

It's like Zardoz (The Wizard of Oz.).

Stick your thumb over the LOM and you have Zoom.

The reverse of Zoom, is what a cow says.

The cow says "Moooz"...

You must have had a really broken Mattel "See and Say" as a child. ;)

On the Wire, every black kid was always talking about being afraid of their moms.

I did not realize that their were so many lesbian mothers in Baltimore.

Puts the rest of the country to shame.

I noticed that adverts for the show on the CW, the picture replacement outside the windows of the Daily Planet isn’t there. They must have been given the footage before it was finished.

So part of theory could be true. Looks like he wasn’t Ultraman in that other Earth but some variation of “Injustice” Superman.

Seems rather dickish to only take Jordan to the fortress. Jonathon deserves to know his history as well. Also, could it be possible that Jordan needs to be close to his brother for his powers to work?

Superman and Lois
Season 1 - Episode 2 - "Heritage"

Clark/SM / Lois: One unrealistic thing about the show is Lois always letting Kyle (an Edge loyalist) know what's on her mind. Kyle has no love for the Kents--especially anyone from big city media, so the writers should have had her tread lightly around anyone associated with and/or supporting anyone as dangerous as Edge.

Lane's father predicts moving the family to Smallville--and revealing his true identity to the boys--will destroy the family. I will go ahead and assume that will actually play out an an arc this season, with Sam having some involvement with the Kents' troubles. Although Clark initially supported Lois pursing the Edge story (thinking its making her happy and still the Lois from Metropolis), I can see Lois stirring up trouble with the Smallville residents will create a line in the sand between Clark and Lois, as her actions are disrupting the calm / time for development he moved the family to Smallville in the first place.

Jonathan / Jordan Kent:
Jordan going into angst mode about not being allowed to attend school is a bit much; he's old enough to know the gravity of what his powers mean in a world of humans.

Now that Jordan has a better grasp on his heritage, the show would do well for Jordan to not go through the angst of feeling his powers were more of a a random occurrence, then they suddenly "happen" in a sense the tests failed to predict. Further, if or when his powers do present, I would not want to see Jordan assume he's "the next in line" (more than what the hologram of Jor-El mentioned) to act as some sort of superhero. That would fall into the "teenage screw-up" / drama territory. Not good.

Jonathan's own frustrations were the most on-point part of this episode--he did lose everything going to Smallville, and he's walking the fine line between settling for that life, and wanting to leave, using upside-down teenager "logic".

Morgan Edge: Well, now that Lois has quit the Planet, and is working for the local paper, he will see her a an out of control threat that needs to be dealt with (the beginning of that---her car being blown up--was in the teaser for E3), but this should not be a simple, "Lois vs. Edge" conflict. The drama would intensify if it turns out Kyle Cushing planted the bomb, or prods the local high-schoolers to torment the Kent boys...and you know where that might lead...

Luthor: Okay, whether he's being truthful or not, his whole "you destroyed my planet" business demanded more than teases leading to his predictable full reveal, and we were given a brief explanation (flashback). Now, he's planted the seeds of doubt in Sam Lane's mind about Superman, but his reasoning makes no sense; he's determined to make this world's Kal-El turn into--or be perceived as the tyrant from his own planet all due to a misplaced vendetta (and that Superman killing the Sam Lane of that world). Eh? Again, unless there's some well thought out motive for trying to destroy a Superman completely unrelated to the one he knew, it will make Luthor come off as small-minded.

NOTES: For a series set in the Heartland with few frills, one would think the showrunners would have allocated more of a budget for the fortress, as it was as video-gamey as the one created for Supergirl. Same applies to the CG fight scenes and Luthor's ship. Typical Berlanti low rent EFX with few exceptions.

Next week, Jordan screams at Clark, wishing he would return to his old ways of not being around...

GRADE: B-.
