Spoilers "Superman & Lois" Season 1 spoiler discussion!

My work schedule pretty much eliminates watching any Prime Time show live. I had to watch S&L over two evenings after the premier aired. Always at least a day late.
Nowadays, pretty much every show I watch is off the PVR, even if it's on the same night as it's shown live. The reason is so that, should I get interrupted, I can stop the show and resume it later without any fuss. After I got interrupted once and I was left wondering after missing the end why I hadn't recorded the show in advance, I've made it my routine.

I don't know what I'd do without the 30-second skip on the DVR. I occasionally maybe have news on live or something but other than that it's going to be pre-recorded or on demand.

Oh, so maybe we'll sometimes get 5 minutes of Superman action in between generic teenage bullshit you can find in the average CW show. Add a few minutes of setup for the villain, and almost 10 minutes of a 40 minute show could possibly be about Superman. Well, I guess that technically beats Lois & Clark, but Superman/Clark and Lois should get the majority of the screen time and plot, so the problem with the show stands. They should have just stolen the title of a recent DC comic and called it Super Sons (which I know was about John Kent and Damien Wayne, but the title fits here, too), since at least the show wouldn't be false advertising.

It would still be teen drama shit, but it wouldn't be lying. It also wouldn't draw in as many people though, so the lying title makes sense from that perspective. Not a lot of new viewers are going to give a CW show a chance if it advertises that its literally just a generic crappy CW show with a bit of a Superman themed paintjob.

Maybe you should try actually watching the show before you talk shit about it.

Just gotten around to watching the premiere and i am really impressed - it was very good.

I have abandoned the Arrowverse for the most part, most shows start off really well ( Arrow, Flash) but as time and the seasons go on the storylines get more confused and the writers find ever more contrived ways to create either drama or prevent the hero of the show to use his/her full abilities as it would resolve the plot of the week in minutes. On top of that, and i might catch flak for this, many actors, even the leading ones, are to me rather mediocre.

That being said i get a different vibe here - the setting is different and the whole dynamic is different. There is no team of supertalented nerds or a supersecret organization helping the hero, it feels more grounded and lowkey and just sets up future storylines which is what a pilot does. This Superman comes off quite nice - a good mix of kickass power when in the costume but otherwise struggling to keep his family together and dealing with huge loss.

Even the teenagers were not annoying and the actors play their roles quite well - while it was no surprise that at least one of them had powers and it was also no surprise that it was not the sports jock but the nerd introvert i still want to know how that plays out.

Now let's see if this show can keep up with the pilot, i'm prepared to see lower production values as it goes on because it burns up quite a bit of money at the level of SFX we saw in the pilot but i hope it doesn't matter that much as i want to see more family stories and not Superman doing Superman things for 42 minutes ( there's been enough of that onscreen for several decades now).

Injured Superman falling back to earth after also being stabbed by a kryptonite knife? Superman Returns did that before Snyder.

The most recent, known scene of Superman falling back to earth was in Dawn of Justice. Its doubtful anyone would remember much from SR, other than how awful it was.

Thank goodness speaking for yourself, there's a reason people were excited to have Routh back in Crisis.

I was unimpressed by Routh as Superman in Returns, but he was very good in Crisis and made me reassess him in the role. Which leads me to conclude that the problem was with how he was directed. Indeed, everyone in that movie seemed to be under instructions to play it as sedately and mutedly as possible.

At the time, I liked to say that the problem with Batman Begins was that it was an intimate indie drama trying to be a big action blockbuster, and the problem with Superman Returns was that it was a big action blockbuster trying to be an intimate indie drama.

Superman Returns is a far better movie than Snyder's misfires, and Routh a better Superman than Cavill.

I think both Routh and Cavill are excellent Supermen who didn't get movies worthy of their ability. But then, all the Reeve movies have problems too, even the first one. It seems far easier to get the casting of Superman right than it is to get a Superman movie story right.

A lot of people seem to feel Cavill was a good casting choice who was just poorly served by Snyder, but I find him lacking in the theatrical Justice League as well. There, he's mostly being written and directed by Whedon, with the clear intent of lightening him up and making him a more traditional, upbeat Superman, but to me, Cavill still comes off as stiff. There's a self-conscious reserve about him that's at odds with the easy warmth of better Superman performances. (And given that this is the S&L thread, I'll note Hoechlin has that ease and warmth in spades.)

I'd argue that Cavill acts more like Superman* in the promo interviews for the movies than he ever gets to in the movies themselves.

*How I see the character, so obviously mileage may vary.

I don't watch Teen dramas. Like I said, Smallville was it for me and superhero teen dramas. after four years of suffering through Clark Kents high school years waiting for the show to become decent (which it eventually did, for the most part) I have absolutely no tolerance left for live action shows about teen superhero drama. I know what happens in the episode from reading about it online, and its a generic CW drama that is going to pretend its a superman related show for the first few episodes to try to draw in an audience.

Its been 63 years since the one and only live action Superman show that was actually about Superman (not about Superboy or Clark's high school years or focused on Lois, but a show starring Superman as the main character) went off the air. We're due a real Superman show, but it obviously won't happen on a network famous for its special brand of bullshit like the CW.

Is it too much to ask to get an actual Superman show at this point? We haven't gotten a good Superman movie since 10 years before I was born (Superman II, although I honestly nly count the Donner Cut of Superman II as an actually good movie), the comics were ruined by the New 52 then by Brian Bendis, and Superman's last solo cartoon ended in 2000. I just want some good Superman content, and the CW Superman is a decent Superman who could easily headline a show about Superman. Instead he's playing third fiddle to shitty teens even though his name is in the show title.

Obviously that has its fans, but it really sucks for anyone who just wants to watch a superman show about the character.

Superman Returns is a far better movie than Snyder's misfires, and Routh a better Superman than Cavill.

Superman Returns was needlessly nostalgic, wrongheaded garbage which attempted--and failed--to resurrect a series that crumbled under its own silliness with each successive entry.
