Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

Earth-1 has three shows exploring it, four if you count Vixen, five if you retroactively include Constantine. It's already a huge universe. And making it a multiverse makes it even huger. It adds a new layer of complexity that makes it more interesting than if you just crammed it all together in one undifferentiated mass.

For the record, since they introduced the element of the multiverse, we don't actually know whether "Constantine" was set on Earth-1 or not. All we know is that Earth-1 also has a John Constantine "master of the dark arts" who may or may not be the one from the show "Constantine".

Which they might want to choose to do if they ever do The Spectre, which "Constantine" didn't quite handle that good.

Speaking of "Constantine", wasn't the reason some CW executive gave for not picking up that show for a second season that they didn't want to be the comic show network?! Whoever that executive was must feel pretty stupid now.
On that note, maybe The CW should try and get "Constantine" going again. It would benefit from the connection to the other shows, but it'd be different enough to also get other demographics who are not interested in superhero shows.

Constantine is probably Earth-1 just to keep things simple. Gotta rewatch the series to see if anything stands out that doesn't quite fit. And I don't see it as a comic book show. It's more like Supernatural but it just happens to take place in the DC universe.

I honestly don't expect them to outright merge the universes, though I hope they take full advantage of the greater crossover potential. It might be nice to explore Supergirl on Earth-1 as a story arc though...have her trapped there for several episodes worth of story or somesuch. On Earth-SG, not only does she very much live in the shadow of her legendary cousin (don't deny it, it's all over the bloody show), but being a Kryptonian doesn't seem to be that big of a deal...Non had Kryptonian followers who had nothing better to do than stay behind the scenes most of the season, and the DEO seems to have Kryptonite stockpiles to rival the Silver Age comics. Supergirl on Earth-1, however, could be more of a Big Fucking Deal.

Constantine seems like a natural replacement should they ever cancel Supernatural.

It is a comic book show the same way "Arrow" or "Supergirl" are comic book shows, it is based on a comic book series. "Constantine" also didn't just take characters from the comics, they adapted specific stories from "Hellblazers".

You just meant it's not a superhero show, so I played the wise-ass pointing out comics are a medium, not a genre. You're welcome.

Constantine's Arrow episode did contain several subtle nods to the continuity of the NBC series, like a mention of his base of operations where he stored magical objects, and a reference to the episode in which he performed the same soul-restoring ceremony he did for Sara. I do believe it was meant to be in the same universe. The Arrowverse Wiki certainly thinks so, since it includes Constantine in the list of series it covers but not Supergirl.

Although I've come to regret that a bit in retrospect, because I think it would be neat if Constantine showed up in FOX's Lucifer. I wouldn't mind if they established that Constantine, the same single individual, were capable of crossing between universes.

Which they might want to choose to do if they ever do The Spectre, which "Constantine" didn't quite handle that good.

There I'd have to agree, since their Jim Corrigan was an incredibly awful actor. Seriously, it's like he stepped out of the cast of Manos, the Hands of Fate.

Then again, the Arrowverse has changed the identities of heroes before -- Laurel Lance instead of Dinah for Black Canary, Jefferson Jackson instead of Jason Rusch for Firestorm. So they could skip Corrigan and have the Spectre be Crispus Allen, say. (Allen was a character on Gotham, but they dropped him after about 9 episodes, so it seems they'd have no interest in claiming him.)

Hmm, yeah, that could be the Friday night show to complete the set.

That would be tricky, unless it were scheduled to be during Supergirl's hiatus. Doing several episodes of SG without the title character would be awkward.

On Earth-SG, not only does she very much live in the shadow of her legendary cousin (don't deny it, it's all over the bloody show)

If you think I've been denying it, you haven't been listening to a word I've said. The whole point is that she proved her ability to stand on her own even with the legacy of Superman already hanging over her, that pushing against that shadow and establishing herself successfully in spite of it, rather than merely in its absence, is an important part of her story arc. After all, we live in a world where women constantly have to fight harder than men in order to prove themselves, as Cat Grant has pointed out explicitly. Most women don't have the luxury to be free of that shadow, because there's no shortage of men in the world. So they have to push against it and prove that they are not overshadowed after all. Cat didn't need Perry White to die or disappear before she could establish herself as an equal to him in the media world; if anything, the shadow he cast over her gave her an incentive to shine brighter. So the fact that Supergirl has to establish and define herself within the context of a world where Superman's influence is pervasive is fundamental to the show's feminist themes and allegories.

From the perspective of other characters, sure, but what about her perspective? The reason she had so many Kryptonian foes is because heroes need to be faced with villains who are at least as powerful as they are, ideally more so. Sure, as a guest character, she could show up and make a big difference, but Supergirl outpowering all the heroes and villains on Earth-1 would get boring after a while. There'd have to be something really big for her to stand against.

It was flat-out stated by both Marc Guggenheim and Wendy Mericle that Matt Ryan was playing the exact same character he played on NBC's Constantine series when he guest-stared in "Haunted", which retroactively grafted the series' events and the rest of its characters into the Arrowverse proper.

She could be appearing on both shows while she's on Earth-1, and on Earth-SG, they could play a "World Without a Supergirl" B-story back home.

They could also contrive a circumstance that brings some of her supporting cast along for the ride.

If you think I've been denying it, you haven't been listening to a word I've said.

I mean, for Pete's sake, she's clear on the other side of the continent. She's already out of his shadow.

It would be more about how a world without godlike aliens would react to her being around, than about who she could beat up.

Looks like Marvel Might Sue.

I look at that, and all I see is Damage Control.

(Superhero insurance/construction company at Marvel.)

I have always wondered why they choice to have Dinah Laurel Lance go by her middle name.

It's the opposite approach Kenneth Johnson took in creating The Incredible Hulk tv series. He gave Bruce Banner the name David Banner because he did not like the common comic book style of alliteration of characters first and last names starting with the same letter.

One has to wonder if Bill Bixby had an opinion about this....

I don't remember anything in particular that indicates a specific universe for the series Constantine. The only specific reference to real events is one episode (Quid Pro Quo) quite clearly stated that Bill de Blasio is the mayor of New York City - so supposedly Earth-1 has an NYC.

There's rumours about the soundtrack coming out this summer (from supergirl.tv) According to the twitter account of Blake Neely, there's five soundtracks coming out. (I'm thinking Flash season 2, Arrow season 4, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl and Blindspot). I'm looking for confirmation on which five though.

For one or two episodes, sure, but it'd be stretching it to do a whole long arc.

Again, hard to sustain for multiple episodes. Kara is a lead character in her own right, not merely an external phenomenon for other characters to react to. So the storyline would have to be something that would be challenging to her, from her perspective.

Maybe they just liked it better. Or maybe there was a legal issue. Often, TV character names are changed to avoid similarity to real people's names, if the name in question is unique or if the real person and the fictional character are in the same line of work. For instance, Chicago cop Karrin Murphy in the Dresden Files books was changed to Connie Murphy in the TV show because there was a real Chicago cop named Karen Murphy. And Jonathan Archer on Star Trek: Enterprise was going to be Jackson Archer until they found there was exactly one real Jackson Archer in the US.

That's the advantage of a name like "Felicity Smoak." Not much chance of duplication. (Although I was surprised to discover that Smoak is a real surname, and is indeed pronounced like "smoke.")

Posting it here rather the season two thread, but in the UK, the season 1 dvd/blu came out this morning.

One small issue with the episode guide in the cover is that it lists Livewire as episode 4 (as aired on tv due to real life events) but on playback goes from Fight Or Flight (3) to How Does She Do It (which I think was the intended order). Hopefully, when I get back to playback, it'll automatically go to Livewire next.

On Blu, They've also packed seven episodes on to the first disk (probably the second too with six and the extras on the last. No commentaries that I've seen yet, but some deleted scenes, a couple of featurettes and gag reel)
