Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

They should do an episode where a supervillain paralyzes Supergirl by inundating her with adorable puppies. Winn is the only one who can save her, because he's a cat-lover. See, that would make him useful! ;)

Getting back on track, from commercials it looks like Superman will be making another cameo appearance in next week's episode. And actually helping her out in battle as well, which should answer the question people were having over whether he would ever provide assistance.

I forgot to mention, something for anyone who hasn't yet seen the premier but plans to, or if you watch it again... the first time Kara takes to the skies, look out for what appears to be an aerial view of Vasquez Rocks (slanted mountain tops) off in the distance.

The only real thumbs down I have with this series is Chyler Leigh as Alex. Don't know if it's the directing of acting, but I'm not liking it.

You mean the start of episode 2, right? Where she's being tested by the DEO? Yeah, I noticed that too. (In the pilot, her first time taking to the skies was in the city at night.)

I've definitely noticed the mountain range in the background, which makes me wonder where this National City is supposed to be located. I know people have been assuming it's on the west coast, but has that actually been confirmed anywhere yet? Perhaps in a map I didn't pay enough attention to?

I know it's shot in LA, but that doesn't necessarily mean the city is supposed to be located there.

Though not an absolute, it is not an isolated incident, or climate in Western culture.

Before we move on to more warm puppies...I think its fair to say that making a sly reference to "performance issues" is not the same as threats of violence or rape.

Given how blatant they are about showing the LA skyline and landmarks, I think we can safely assume it's a stand-in for LA -- just as Gotham City in Batman '66 and Metropolis in Superman: The Movie were overtly, recognizably New York City in all but name.

Although that makes me wonder if they couldn't have come up with a better alternate name for surrogate-LA. Gotham is an old nickname for NYC, so that makes sense. Maybe they could've come up with something based on a nickname for LA. Like Sun City or Angel City (though that's maybe a bit on the nose for Supergirl's town).

For what it's worth, the full original name is LA is El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles del Rio de Porciuncula (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels of the Porciuncula River). I don't think that helps much, though. "Queen City" is taken by my own hometown, Cincinnati, and "River City" suggests that Harold Hill will be showing up to organize a marching band.

Of course not, but the point is that if such extreme levels of sexism still exist in the present day, it shouldn't be surprising that subtler forms still exist as well.

^TV Gotham sometimes gave us very recognizable L.A. scenery, complete with palm trees.

I wouldn't expect any hard location continuity from a DC show set in a fictional city. Not only did TV versions of Metropolis and Gotham freely mix elements of New York and L.A., but more recently, Smallville gave us snow-capped mountains seen from a Kansas highway.

Thanks.

They didn't even try to hide the L.A. skyline.

I have looked for a map to show "National City's" location, but I can't find one.

According to Wikipedia, there are four National City's in the USA, including one in CA. but not in L.A., it's in San Diego County.

Sure -- on location, it was LA. But in stock establishing shots, it was always NYC. For instance, the establishing shot of Gotham City Hall was New York City Hall, the wide shots of Chimes Square were Times Square, and the street scenes under the narrator's opening "Another fine day in Gotham City" spiels often had recognizable NYC landmarks like the Flatiron Building or Central Park. And the rear-projected city street scenes behind close-ups of Batman and Robin in the Batmobile were also of NYC -- while the wide shots of the Batmobile driving in the city were usually in the 20th Century Fox backlot. (The stock footage of the Batcopter, shot for the feature film, was clearly against the LA skyline, though.)

But this show shouldn't have that kind of split personality, since it's shot in LA and is using stock footage of LA and surrounding locations as its backdrops. So it should have a more consistent look to its scenery.

I was surprised to learn there is an actual city in California with that name. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_City,_California.

The Spanish named the 26,000 acres (11,000 ha) of land El Rancho del Rey (the Ranch of the King), used by Spanish soldiers to graze horses. After independence from Spain, in 1810, the Mexican government renamed it Rancho de la Nación (Ranch of the Nation). Governor Pío Pico granted Rancho de la Nación to his brother-in-law John (Don Juan) Forster in 1845. President Andrew Johnson, in issuing the land patent, listed the name as simply "The National Ranch".[9] National City is the English translation of the land grant name, "Rancho de la Nacion".[10]

The name National City, besides having a real-world connotation, can also be seen as a homage to DC Comics' original name, National Comics.

As far as the city's location goes, it's pretty clearly meant to be in California, and is probably fairly close to Midvale CA, which is where Kara and Alex grew up.
