Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

I don't know anyone that counts the JLA TV movie (was that ever actually shown on TV? or released anywhere?) as any appearance of anyone or anything in any legitimate manner, to be honest.....

Justice League of America has never been aired in the U.S.[9] However, it has been shown on television in the UK (Channel 5),[10] Puerto Rico's WAPA-TV (Channel 4), Thailand (Cinemax), Brazil (Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão), Uruguay, Poland (TVN, TVN 7, TV4), Mexico (TV Azteca), South Africa (e.tv), Germany, India and Israel.[11] Bootleg copies have been distributed through conventions, websites and file sharing networks.[12][13]

Didn't realize it had been aired elsewhere... sorry.

Even if you want to argue Smallville doesn't really count because MM stayed as a human except for brief moments (which I don't agree with), the JLA TV movie had him in full martian form in most of his (somewhat short) screen time, and showed his shapeshifting powers. It definitely counted. The Supergirl TV show has had some firsts, but Martian Manhunter isn't one of them.

I'm speaking in "the grand scheme of things" meaning MM as a main character with central focus and being treated as one. His Smallville appearances for me don't entirely count because he was in, what, a handful of episodes over the course of the 10 seasons of that show? Yes he was in there, but he was more not there.

As for the JLA movie? A shitty movie made 20+ years ago? Please. I mean, weren't they all basically in Halloween costumes?

Instead of always saying, "Martian Manhunter as a fully realized character handled well with ample screentime" is a lot to say. So I'm shortening it to "first real use of MM." The "real" part in there is the key. Yes he was in Smallville and that crummy JLA special. But here? He's a character we're seeing in every episode, seeing develop, getting back-story and seeing his range of powers.

Indeed. I only know about because I've read articles on it and seen clips and... Yikes! It almost seems like a fan-production. And it's being used as "evidence" MM was on TV before via an obese David Ogden Stiers? And it never aired in the U.S.?

I may have to pick-up a bootleg of that at my local Comic-Con this year and hate-watch this thing. But, yeah, it certainly doesn't "count" as a use of MM given it's abysmal quality and not airing in the US (which I either didn't know or forgot.)

That leaves us with Smallville. Which did have in there but not to the level/degree we're seeing in Supergirl. (Checking, he was only in 11 episodes of Smallville, and IIRC a couple of those were glorified cameos.)

Phil Morris as J'onn was one of the most awesome things about Smallville. I remember posting that I would've loved to see a spinoff about him.

Ooh, that'd be a neat in-joke. Do a Supergirl episode where J'onn has to impersonate someone played by Phil Morris. Or David Ogden Stiers! Or Carl Lumbly. Or all of the above!

heck if you wanted to do something silly, have MM say he was showboating as a cop back in his early days in some small town. I met this farmboy with skills. wink wink.

I don't like Mean Supergirl. :sigh:

I think that was a very interesting choice to add that dynamic into the storyline. She's going to have to deal with the consequences, at least for a little bit. And poor J'onn...

Cheap Halloween costumes is a more apt description.

Well, I count it. It was a terrible TV movie, which had super weird reality TV style interviews with the characters stuck in periodically, but they did suit up and use their powers to fight bad guys. As someone who has seen superhero movies not even do that, I can't say JLA doesn't count or is the worst thing ever. Its not good at all, but honestly its still better than the Supergirl movie, and people still count that as Supergirl's first live action appearance

I think I'm looking more forward to tomorrow nights episode than the flash episode because of that reason.

The JLA movie never actually being released also should count for something.

It was never released in America, but it was released in several countries, like the UK. So, its not like Corman's Fantastic Four where its only around because it got leaked, you could at one point see the JLA TV movie on TV, so it counts.

Well, they have already said that he knows Superman and they have a history together. The one doesn't really contradict the other, especially since on SG, he tries his hardest not to use his Martian form, and on SV, he rarely used his Martian form.

In John Ostrander's MM comics series, there were a couple of stories on how J'onn met a few of the major DC heroes before they became heroes. There was one where J'onn found and checked out Baby Kal-El in the spaceship before the Kents arrived.

Edit: Found the cover.

^ Legends of the Superheroes was broadcast in America, so....its part of Supergirl/Flash/Arrow canon. ;)

Who said the JLA TV movie was canonwith anything? I just said that its officially the first Martian Manhunter appearance in live action, like those specials are the first Hawkman, Huntress, Black Canary and Atom (among others) in live action.

This is one of those rare, remarkable occasions where I actually agree with Kirk55555. I can understand not liking that stuff, but as long as the character was in a show/movie than it counts as an appearance. I could see not counting a small, blink and you miss it cameo, but most of the ones being discussed were fairly major appearances.
EDIT:
Tonight's new episode:
Manhunter:
J'onn J'onzz reveals the details of meeting Kara and Alex's father, Dr. Jeremiah Danvers, and assuming Hank Henshaw's identity. Meanwhile, Kara considers confiding her secret to someone new; and Siobhan plots to bring Kara down.
The promo pictures indicate we will be get full on flashbacks to Henshaw and Danvers meeting J'onzz.
