Spoilers Supergirl - Season 1

Wait, that's an actual show? I assumed she meant The Good Wife and I had just heard it wrong or something. Lol

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_the_Midwife
Call the Midwife is a BBC period drama series about a group of nurse midwives working in the East End of London in the 1950s and 1960s. It stars Jessica Raine, Miranda Hart, Helen George, Bryony Hannah, Laura Main, Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Judy Parfitt, Cliff Parisi, Stephen McGann, Ben Caplan, Emerald Fennell, Victoria Yeates, Linda Bassett and Charlotte Ritchie. The series was created by Heidi Thomas, originally based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth but since expanded to include new, historically sourced material.

And, yes, it is on Netflix.

It's one of those shows, that when you were young, if it was on, your grandmother would have watched it.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure a significant number of them are comic book fans, or else why watch a series about a comic book character.

For the same reason the majority of audiences who turned Star Wars (1977) into the biggest hit up to that time were not science fiction fans. That was the average audience responsible of that. The average audience always outnumbers any fringe or genre-loving base. Do you think the Marvel movies' success is due to a bunch of comic fans? No, because comics of today are barely surviving, and not read by millions as in the Golden Age, where comics were a significant staple of cultural life--particularly in North America.

And it's not like the villains originated in the old cartoons. They originated in the comics, and comic book fans would likely have significant knowledge of them. The idea that they're obscure just because nobody watched the Superfriends is fuzzy logic.

Again, the average person--TV audience--would never know them from the comics, and they were most visible in the cartoon--which was hardly watched. I stress we are talking about the average audience member--most not reading comics at all. From a comic fan perspective, you might think the villains are known, but they simply do not exist to the average person.

I'll provide another example--Bucky Barnes. As a comic fan, I read the character's stories or references in titles from the Golden Age (Captain America, Human Torch, Young Allies, Young Men, All-Winners, etc.), Silver (Tales of Suspense, Captain America, Sgt. Fury, The Avengers, etc.) Bronze (The Invaders, Fantastic Four Annual, What If?, Marvel Premiere, etc.) and beyond, but not for a second do I think that his widespread recognition in the Marvel movies has anything to do with comic book readers' awareness / support.

He might as well be a character invented for the screen, because the average audience member granting Marvel movies a license to print money are not comic fans.

It's true. I couldn't have comics as a kid, I missed everything!

Until CA I'd never heard of "bucky". Bucking, Bucko, Buckaroo, Buckyballs, yes, but never Bucky as in that guy. His death in CA was tragic, I nearly cried for Cap's loss. That tragedy was doubled in TWS, and now I sit chewing my nails wondering how it will conclude.

Can. Not. Wait.

For those not familiar with him from the comics, here's some (Captain America &) Bucky 101.

I didn't notice this until someone linked this gif. I have not watched man of steel since it came out.

John has no practice on Mars at lying, since telepaths can instantly detect deception.

On Earth, lying is probably like the best chocolate int he universe, but he's like a 4 year old with sticky fingers and face smeared ear to ear in brown goodness.

The Choco is a lie.

I'm watching the Justice League cartoons, and imagining what this show would be like if it had the versions of J'onn and Kara we got there. Hee!

Ooh! Ooh! I know we can't have Bats OR Green Arrow on this show (unless Barry brings guests next time), but can we have The Question, pretty please?

Vic Sage or Renee Montoya? The latter was a character on Gotham (although she was dropped halfway through the first season), so there might be problems with a CBS/Berlanti show getting permission to use her.

^^
The Dollmaker already appeared on both shows, so if they really wanted to do it I'm sure they could find a way.

^
I wonder about The Creeper instead? He's a bit more fantastical it seems to me. The Question fits better to me on Arrow. Granted that all might be a moot point soon depending on how Flash and Supergirl's worlds intersect. But still in terms of each show's tone, The Question (from the JL incarnation) feels more at home on Arrow.

If this series had the JL/JLU version of Supergirl--along with the ever solid, powerful writing staff, Supergirl would be a must-see adaptation. Unfortunately...

Ooh! Ooh! I know we can't have Bats OR Green Arrow on this show (unless Barry brings guests next time), but can we have The Question, pretty please?

The Question is an interesting character, but his brand of JLU conspiracy hunter arc is already creeping its way into SG, between the DEO's suspicion about General Lane (and Lucy will be added to that list), and Lord's own meddling, the series regulars will have enough of that kind of plotting.

One thing I do not want to see are minor, "C" characters from the comics--there's enough currently involved in main plots, to the point where the series will end up being a "who's who" more than having legitimate reasons for being added to the series.

I've been working on getting caught up on the show's I've fallen behind on, so I didn't get around to watching last week's until this morning.
It's nice to see someone, in this case James, actually confronting Kara about the DEO holding Maxwell Lord.
I didn't realize they were introducing Siobhan Smythe before she became/was revealed as Silver Banshee. After this one I'm actually a little disappointed she is going to become a supervillain. I think it would have been fun if she was just a regular human work rival.
Master Jailer was an interesting villain. I love how casual they are about Kara using her powers in the fights. A lot of the older shows seemed to always make a big deal out of it whenever we saw the hero use their powers, so it's fun to have one where she is always using all sorts of power during the fights. I guess a lot of that probably comes down to having a lot better and cheaper special effects.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't understand why James feels he has to tell Lucy Kara is Supergirl. I don't really see where it's his place to tell her, or why it even matters for their relationship. Either way he's still spending a lot of time hanging out with Kara, and I don't really see where her being a superhero would matter.

Well, the Fortress had some nods to various incarnations, it's not just a clone of the Donner version. And that one thing we saw....
We have the Legion flight ring...and it's Superman's!

The way they're playing it, I don't think that telling Lucy that Kara is Supergirl would be helping anything...Lucy has issues with James's closeness to both of them.

ETA: The show wasn't far behind me on that point.

SG / Kara: SG learns that she's "stronger together" in 5...4..3...2...

Anyway, James being in on all things Superman / taking her to the Fortress of Solitude is yet another way to draw them together, along with:

James: "...but you don't have to fight this alone."
Supergirl:
"I'm not alone. I'm with you.
Kara: "He's the truest hero I've ever known."

aaand. that "stronger together" thing.......1: "I need your help."

James: Enough with the desire to tell Lucy Kara's ID. This sub-plot makes no sense at all--he's as aware of how her "secret" is known to too many as she is.

Alex: Still letting Hank take the fall for her. Now that she's finally admitted to the killing,
..and she's totally unbelievable as a fighter.

Smythe: "I have difficulty making conversation with men under 6 feet tall." Utterly sexist. If a male character said that in the reverse, the media's Social Justice Warriors would be writing endless articles on the mistreatment of women in a show meant (in part) to be inspirational. Yeah, she's an antagonist, but she can be that sans that kind of bullsh*t.

Lucy:Still desperate to expose everything.

...and acknowledges that James and Kara love each other. hopefully, Kara does not chase after Lucy trying to convince her that "its not like that" again.

Kara revealing that James shared his father's story--and Lucy did not know...whoops!

Hank: The most decent character on the show--not a good look when the supporting character is consistently the best. Its getting to the Fonz situation (a character who started off as an occasional supporting player, but broke out to be the most interesting), and for a superhero series, that's not good.

Winn: Cat calling him "Toyman junior." out in the open. Hmm.....
Whether Smythe is playing him or not, remains to be seen, but at least he can get over his Kara crush.

Indigo: At least they acknowledged she was one of the Brainiac series. I hope there's no magical / super computer to take her down (a gimmick overused in modern TV dramas). Wait...oh, well.

Non: I'm kid of getting tired of the Kryptonian villain arc.

FX: The missile FX was poor. The same kind of sequence in Superman the Movie was head and shoulders above this.

BIG CALL OUT: THE RING. I want to see Mon-El! Saturn Girl! Invisible Kid! Lightning Lad! Wildfire!
