Spoilers Strange New Worlds jumps the shark... ("Subspace Rhapsody")

Gotta be honest, I watched the Buffy musical episode years ago and liked it just fine. Well made, but ultimately forgettable. “Subspace Rhapsody” however I loved. And I guess the biggest difference is that just in general I enjoy Strange New Worlds a great deal more than I do Buffy. The SNW characters as well as their fictional universe are much more dear to my heart than Buffy could ever be. Mind you, the episode wasn‘t perfect, but IMHO one of the best of the show and surely one of the best of this current era of Trek.

Seems like a perfectly cromulant thing to happen on Star Trek. I once saw Spock dance the flamingo.*

*Yes...yes, I know.
All the various crew... of various species, who most likely don't have the same dances... dancing in unison and synchronicity. Along with 'dancing' starships.

"Subspace Rhapsody" being a musical was already bad enough, but DANCING WITH THE STARSHIPS?

Just way past the point of ludicrous.

BTVS was one of my two or three favorite skiffy shows of this century so far. Farscape would be another.

The music itself in OMWF was certainly better and more creative than any other TV one-off musicals. The story was actually pivotal in the season's arc, and the thematic aspects of the writing were exceptionally well-woven with the lyrics and connected with the other episodes that year.

SNW is...a distant second with respect to overall quality. But it is in only second place. ;)

I think if you can be compelled to create lyrics and sing harmony, dancing should not be a problem. Synchronized flying? Seems like a thing

So what?

You believe in transporters, humans procreating with alien species, faster-than-light travel...all kinds of unreasonable and probably impossible things.

And they never provide explanations that are worth a spit for the most preposterous things they assert.

And, as has been mentioned already, everyone has their own line on what they consider is going past the point of believing the episode or story. And just like how you have your opinions on how this episode presents itself, I have mine. All the views are valid.

I hated many episodes of SNW more than I hated the musical. I didn’t like it all that much either, I just found it kind of an inoffensive waste. Lots of autotune and the songs didn’t do much for me. Maybe if I was a bigger fan of the show, in general, it would have worked better to me. I like maybe 1 in 5 or 6 episodes of this show so I was probably not going to be won over by it anyway.

The reason I do that for VOY season 1 episodes is because the font is different than the rest of the episodes for that series. (It's one of the reasons you can instantly recognize which 4 episodes aired in season 2 were produced in season 1.)

Italicizing is the only method I know of to convey the difference. It's something I've always done.
How do you deal with DS9's ever-shrinking ep titles? ;)

yeah, a character arc that mostly did not feel earned or just felt more like sending a message of who runs the show. Sometimes you can tell how good or bad a series is, if it begins to take you away from the in-universe.

One thing I would give buffy credit for, they knew how to do break ups that felt earned, emotional crushing to the soul and feel like you the audience also felt like you lost something and this is after the characters have been together for a good amount of time.

The Chapel and spock break up has none of this and was one of SNW misguided and silliest girl boss moments of the entire series. Seeing just how much we once used to revear Spock as a character in star trek lore, none of that was worth it for him to be dumped so publicly. I would say though that the Laan/Kirk dynamic in the musical stuff does not seem that bad now compared to season 3 Laan/Spock.

OK, gabby1701.

I just went through 7 pages of this drek.

Again with the overemphasis on how you hate strong women. "Girl boss?" I told you to knock it off with the misogyny/incel crap, did I not?

So accept this warning. I mean what I say. Everyone is sick of reading it.

Also - this is the SNW forum. While I don't mind references back to the original series, it is NOT the place to compare the show with TNG. That discussion would belong in General Trek Discussion. As for the Buffy love, that discussion belongs in SF&F, not here.

If you keep on doing this, your tenure here will be rather short.
