Warning for other - getting personal. Trolling, whatever.

I told you guys that this needed to stop. And yes, I read the entire exchange.
Yep, well deserved.
I knew better and crossed the line anyway.
Won't happen again.
My apologies to all.

FWIW. I *like* Ortegas, I think she's a great character. Just that her 'tude is a little harsh. As I said in my post imagine if Wesley under Riker or Picard, or Cheov or Sulu under Kirk, Paris under Janeway, or disposable character under Sisko quipped in the same way? They wouldn't take it. Even The Cage Pike.

Just saying the attitude if the characters in his gen of Trek are different and a little less professional. Not saying that's good or bad, just a difference I see.
Junior officers quipped at Senior officers and Senior officers quipped at Junior officers all the time in TOS:

A couple of examples from TOS S1 The Corbomite Maneuver:

SPOCK: All decks have reported green, Mister Bailey.

BAILEY: Yes, sir.

SPOCK: And when the Captain arrives he will expect a full report on

BAILEY: The cube's range and position. I'll have it by then. Raising my voice back there doesn't mean I was scared or couldn't do my job. It means I happen to have a human thing called an adrenaline gland.

SPOCK: It does sound most inconvenient, however. Have you considered having it removed?

BAILEY: Very funny.

SULU: You try to cross brains with Spock, he'll cut you to pieces every time.

BAILEY: Sir, we going to just let it hold us here? We've got phaser weapons. I vote we blast it.

KIRK: I'll keep that in mind, Mister Bailey, when this becomes a democracy.

In the 23rd Century quips are the norm.:D

And Kirk stuck Bailey on a little blinky ship with a little kid alien with a funny voice and goofy laugh as punishment to get him off his ship for being a wiseass.

I do not understand this obsession with Ortegas's behavior. She's not even in the top 5 badly behaved officers

Oh, I think it's clear why a less-traditionally feminine-looking woman of color might be held to an unfair standard.

FWIW. I *like* Ortegas, I think she's a great character. Just that her 'tude is a little harsh.

Something I like about Ortegas is that she's got a bit more of an edge to her than most of the other characters. She can be a bit of an asshole, a bit arrogant; she literally starts random log entries with, "I'm Erica Ortegas, and I fly the ship!" She brags. And sometimes, she's a bit of a hawk -- she's not always willing to give diplomacy a try if she thinks doing so risks failure and therefore could expose the Federation to danger. Like Worf, I suspect that she's the Federation equivalent of a political conservative -- I could see her voting for the Federation foreign policy equivalent of Ronald Reagan. We need some more development to her, but she's pretty unique in the SNW cast and I like having that variety.

Boilmer made an error at the beginning saying it was discovered by the original crew of the Enterprise. That would have been April’s command.

Here's what I'm getting from the discussion about "quips" (and I have no dog in this race). It's not that quips are an issue. All of the examples from TOS have Bailey giving a quip, Uhura did a quip, Chekov did a couple, Sulu here and there. D'Amato had a zinger nearby. It's natural for humans. But each did them once in a while (McCoy doesn't count, he's one of the inner circle and Kirk shuts him up when he gets to be too much).

I think the objection is that Ortegas does them a lot. It's in what seems to be the majority of her dialog. Pike is the coolest Dad Captain ever, so it's fine by him and fine by me. She's fun. She's unique to this crew (on the SeaQuest she would just be one of a dozen quippy young officers). But that's what I'm hearing.

And from what a few veterans have told me, you can say almost anything you want as long as you put a "sir" at the end of it. :rommie:
