As for the flagship thing, I don't see any reason why the Enterprise can't be just another ship. The ship and the characters can be special to us. They don't need to be special, period.
It's always been special:

"There's only 12 like her in the fleet."

"He commands a starship, proconsul, a very special type of ship."
RE: this whole "flagship" thing....writers are humans, and they don't always have the full breadth of knowledge and experience to use terms correctly. Odds are that some writers over the decades heard the term "flagship," thought it sounded cool, and started using it.
Probably.

Doesn't make it less dumb in the context of an actual ship.

There is always one, though with TNG you have to squint to see it.

TOS: McCoy, Chekov, Uhura (early)
TNG: Riker, Ro, Troi's mother
DS9: Jadzia, Quark
VOY: Paris
ENT: Trip
DISCO: Tilly
PIC: Raffi, Seven
LD: who isn't?
SNW: Ortegas, Chapel
PRO: not Starfleet
Technically, Trek is generally considered a drama, but I think it's been taken to extremes over the years. I don't think it really was until Orville came out (to much justified critical acclaim) that the writers on DSC realized, "Holy shit! You mean we can do more comedy and still have meaningful dramatic stories? Who knew???" Enter Linus' slapstick headcold hijinx immediately thereafter, blowing Saurian snot-pedoes all over the ship.

Sadly, Orville also started sinking under the weight of its own self-absorbed seriousness starting with its second season and beyond, but that's a conversation for a different thread.

Probably because her character is underdeveloped so there isn’t much to focus on beyond the relentless quips.

I think this has gotten better this season. She feels more balanced, but she still needs development.
People have been complaining about it since quip one.

That's the thought that comes to mind every time someone complains about Ortegas.
I feel like her emotional connection to the other characters has come out more this season; I found her annoying when she was just a two-dimensional smartass, but now she’s a two-dimensional smartass who cares about her friends.

I do not understand this obsession with Ortegas's behavior. She's not even in the top 5 badly behaved officers
Probably because military type behavior (in a non military organization ;) ) is expected with strict rules and decorum. There is no room for quips.

I have been around and worked with enough service members to know that strictness and decorum are saved for specific occasions. Ortegas has that hot shot aviator vibe going and it works.

I watched this episode twice. The second time took me longer because I kept rewinding several scenes.
My partner wasn’t in the room so I laughed.

What I like about this episode is that it is funny and fits well into the canon.
What I love about this episode is that the events aren’t a throwaway crossover but emotional drama with long term effects.

Boimler and Mariner have meaningful conversations with the Enterprise crew. Almost the entire cast, not just the “big three” as it could’ve been in older shows. Future SNW episodes could easily reference/flashback/previously-on to scenes with Boimler and Mariner even though it was “just a crossover”.

I think this is one of my favorite Trek episodes of all time.
17/10 dash…nothing!

FWIW. I *like* Ortegas, I think she's a great character. Just that her 'tude is a little harsh. As I said in my post imagine if Wesley under Riker or Picard, or Cheov or Sulu under Kirk, Paris under Janeway, or disposable character under Sisko quipped in the same way? They wouldn't take it. Even The Cage Pike.

Just saying the attitude if the characters in his gen of Trek are different and a little less professional. Not saying that's good or bad, just a difference I see.
