FWIW. I *like* Ortegas, I think she's a great character. Just that her 'tude is a little harsh. As I said in my post imagine if Wesley under Riker or Picard, or Cheov or Sulu under Kirk, Paris under Janeway, or disposable character under Sisko quipped in the same way? They wouldn't take it. Even The Cage Pike.
.
This is unintentional meta commentary on the tonal attitude of the franchise.

I want to like Ortegas, because she is one of those characters where you would want to hang out and just shoot the s*** with on a casual level. However, I have started to notice how she treats superiors officers and it would be nice to see some consequences of that. It's one of the reasons I want to see more of Ortegas. Maybe there is a reason she is this way, or she had something from her past. She's really the only character this series has kind of dropped the ball on.

It comes down to relationship. Pike and Ortegas have a much different relationship. Kirk would take McCoy's and Spock's quips without much issue, or even Mitchell's.

So, saying Picard and company wouldn't take it is a nonstarter because they don't have the same relationship with Ortegas as Pike is presented as having.

Pretty much this. Ortegas is basically a glorified background character. Even Tasha Yar got more development in the few episodes she was in before dying. I found it ironic that Mayweather was her idol, as he was basically a glorified background character too.
What is a glorified background character? How much development in TOS did Sulu and Uhura get?

The difference is that TOS was focused primarily on the big three. They were the only ones named in the opening credits. SNW is supposed to be an ensemble cast, with the entire main cast in the opening credits. Ortegas is getting nowhere near the development every other cast member is getting.

They barely received any additional character development in the 80s movies, well, I guess Sulu got a first name.

Although, perhaps amusingly, when I was a kid it never occured to me that Sulu and Uhura would even have first names, maybe because there were so many one-named stars in the 70s.

They were all retroactively made "main characters" by the con circuit. But even giving them front billing in the films barely elevated their functional status.

*That is, in her short time, Ortegas is as much of a developed character as Sulu was by the time he pompously sipped a tea cup.

Yes I had a feeling that someone had done so in the past. It makes more sense in this episode due to Pike's 'promotion' but Kirk's Enterprise was most definitely not the flagship of the fleet. It was sent out on deep space exploration. That's not where you want your flagship to be.

I guess its clear.
In addition, the definition is different.
In contrast to the present, the flagship of the Federation represents what the Federation stands for.
The Enterprise seems to have been the flagship for a long time.
Possibly the very first one to honor the NX-01 for her central part in history that led to the founding of the Federation.

DSC:Project Daedalus
Pike: Im curious, did you sideline
the Enterprise because you knew I'd never stop reminding you of that?
Admiral Cornwell : ....because if wed lost to the Klingons,we wanted the best of Starfleet to survive.

Are you suggesting that the fact the quips are coming from a slightly alternative looking woman might make her a target.

I doubt that was the intent.

As for Gary: He was a lot more rude than Ortegas, even before he mutated. Just ask Dr. Dehner.

And I'm not really seeing Ortegas as rude. She jokes a lot but she doesn't seem rude. In any case I doubt she would talk to another captain like she does to Pike. She seems quite capable of dialing back the snark if the situation calls for it. Like if she meets Admiral April she'd never talk to him like that.

Well, that and getting a line or two in the 80s movies, which were usually quips as @Tallguy points out. What’s also funny is that Majel Barrett was largely left out of the movies (probably due to solidarity with Gene), so ended up not being part of the “TOS big 7” even though she’s in as many TOS/TAS episodes as Chekov.

Side-by-side of the SNW regular and more animated opening credits.

2 take-aways from this comparison:
  1. It looks much better when the ship isn't constantly in dark (space) shadow
  2. The big square windows on the saucer underside really help a great deal making the cartoon feel to match the TOS version better than with the Disco-snaggle-tooth windows

I love Ortegas as she is. Trek needs her badly.
