I would say the Grand Prize is better than First Prize if there were different stages in a competition. For example the first prize winners from different regions went into a grand final and won the Grand Prize. Like on Glee where they won First Prize in Regionals, went to Sectionals and National and the latter was the Grand Prize. Went and found the original Startrek.com post about competition and it mentions that additionally the First Prize winners win the book deal: http://www.startrek.com/article/strange-new-worlds-fan-fiction-contest-returns-for-2016 Suggests that they too thought the first prize winners would be in the anthology.
The book's content is considered licensed material, right? (i.e. eligible for inclusion on Memory Beta).
Bought it but haven't had a chance to read anything from it yet. I'm definitely wondering if any of these stories will be referenced into the novelverse.
That's the exception rather than the rule for SNW stories. It's happened a few times, but that's out of a couple hundred stories.
Wow, they are very prolific (and they draw, too!): http://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Various/16269589/books (My favourite title out of those is probably If it Fits, I Sits: Cats in Awkward Places. ) Sadly, it turns out they have published Star Trek work professionally before, so they should have been disqualified from this contest: http://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Day-Of-Honor-Omnibus/Various/Star-Trek/9780743455909 http://www.simonandschuster.com/books/The-Captains-Table/Various/Star-Trek/9780743406703 http://www.simonandschuster.com/boo...-Saga/Various/Star-Trek-Voyager/9780671034474
Wow. I would have thought that Pocket Books would have noticed that Various was such a common contributor to the Trek universe... But maybe it's just a coincidence. Various is a common name in some places of the world.
Use the Spoilers tag in the title, make sure the title's called "Review Thread" at the end, and the option for setting up a poll will be given as part of posting the thread. Your poll options are Outstanding, Above Average, Average, Below Average, Poor. Good luck
No physical edition = no sale, as far as I'm concerned. I keep my Star Trek books together on a very large bookshelf, and have no plans to stash my Kindle there.
Sorry - didn't describe it properly - the Spoiler tag for threads is selected from the drop down list at the left of the title box. I've fixed it for you.
Hope it's okay to revive this old thread, even though I only have a question. Namely, did anything ever come of the two first place winner's stories? It seems insane that they'd win the prize but that nothing would ever become of their stories. Were those stories being held for another theoretical anthology?
