I only watched a few of them. Don’t want to spoil everything now
Yes, how else will we learn the all important detail of a character's name?

Glad you are enjoying it.
100%.

The whole thing has a meta undercurrent to it.

I don't think the creators of CBS Trek are interested in just telling a good story. They have more of a corporate mindset. It's about appealing to demographics X, Y and Z, trend-chasing, and course correcting each show/season to appease complaints about the previous iteration.
Of course not. They are trying to make money. When it's your millions on the line then perhaps telling a good story will also seem secondary.

Another thing that's good is that certain things affect aliens differently. For example, Chapel's genome-altering stuff is not as effective on Vulcans as it is on humans, and not to mention that sedatives may not work on some aliens as much as they do humans.

I am happy. It was a Star Trek I could watch with the entire family present, and not worry about. All my hopes are that it keeps this up and is as tight as today was. This was good, like coming home again.

"They've not built a Warp Drive, they've built a Warp Bomb." That's a new one!
Yeah, I was talking to the TV (as you do) when he gave the dramatic reveal, and was like "they STOLE a warp dri-BUILT a warp bomb, yes! That's what they did! A warp bomb, those bastards. We all knew that's what this was."

So, yeah, this episode kept me on my toes at times. I really enjoyed it.

Joyous hour
As someone who absolutely loathes Picard and Disco (Aside from a number of the Pike episodes) all I can say is I smiled for 60 minutes today
Actual SCIENCE FICTION in a modern trek show, smart science fiction.
Thought provoking and intelligently done (what a shock as modern trek goes)
Production values were astounding. but please paint the ship, it looks dirty, doesn’t look to have the grandeur it should in the money shots
And no one standing around crying for drawn out periods of a time, the writers apparently understand this is a pseudo military organization setting and endless self indulgent weeping isn’t necessarily appropriate behavior in any professional organization or in my organization for that matter.
Thank you Avika and team. Well done

I liked it. Gave it a rating of 8 before realizing the rating system is reversed here. So a 3.

I liked Ethan Peck as Spock in Discovery but like him even more here. I think he is nailing the performance. And the haircut and makeup are better too, he looks more like a young Spock,

And I Really like the La'an character.

LOVED the first episode. The only weak part is the opening theme song, which IMO should have more punchy old school TOS music in it. The opening visuals are awesome and the music gets off to a good start, only to kind of fade out to almost elevator music level mediocrity later on. Punch it up!

The title was bland, it's reaching Berman Era "wallpaper music" levels. It really should have more punch in the levels of what was over the animated end credits sequence of the '09 movie.

Ortegas:
"Course captain? What's the mission?"

Pike:
"Our mission? We explore. We seek out new life and new civilizations. We boldly go where no one has gone before."

Uhura:
"Cool!"

^That sequence of dialog at the end of the episode, is a microcosm of what's wrong with it.

I agree. I really liked the episode overall, and I think this has great potential, but I'm really not sure about the fan service. This show, like most Trek since 2009, knows that it's Star Trek and puts that on display a bit too often for my taste with the winks and the nods. So far this has not derailed the storytelling thankfully. But I am worried slightly. The La'an story intrigues me - although I didn't get whether any relation to Khan was established. But Chapel... why is she being Emma Stone now? Uhura I buy, but how is this the same character as in TOS?
