Singh: Much like Tarantino’s love of feet, I guess Kurtzmans “Mean-Girl” fetish is just something that’s going to be continuously forced on the audience. I’m not trying to kink-shame the guy, but surely, he must see how this is getting in the way of good storytelling.
We're only one episode in, but, no, I didn't think La'an as a "mean girl" at all. I like her. I thought she was a strong, intelligent character. She's had a rough past but didn't come across as mean at all in the first episode.

Robert April: I’ve seen comments on YouTube and other places complaining about the race change. I’m not sure what the big deal is. April was a cartoon character who appeared in one episode, and regardless, his character was not defined by his race. Also, the actor did a fine job and had good chemistry with Pike, I hope we see more of him.

They did pretty well with Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, a character who was white for 45 years. So that one Robert April appearance on TAS really doesn't match that.

I remember one line, in TMP:

Our ancestors cast out their animal passions here on these sands, saving our race through the attainment of Kolinahr.

So warring for sure, but does that prove they mastered not getting morning wood, or feeling sexual passion? I think not. How often is it said, Vulcans have feelings.

"Emotions run deeply within our race. In many ways more deeply than in humans. Logic offers a serenity Humans seldom experience. The control of feelings, so that they do not control you." - Sarek

Just poking my head in the chat. I loved this episode. SNW absolute blew it out of the waterpark.
A few highlights:
Pike fighting his demons was masterfully played by Mount. He's a goddamn awesome captain who suddenly lost confidence in himself, is afraid of messing up.
Peck, as Spock, and Romjin as Number One play off that brilliantly, and show him that the only one worried about his job performance is himself.
With all this taking up less than 3 minutes of dialog, the fact that it resonates through the episode is amazing.
Uhura is great, but I"ll be honest that my brain prefers Zoe Saldana. I'm sure she"ll grow on me.
WWIII - You can tell how sincere Pike is. He doesn't go and soapbox like Picard, he's going to get his hands dirty. He's going to break all the rules just so he can save this planet from themselves. And it works.
He's honest about Earth's dirty past. And that they have an opportunity to forge a different future.
T'Pring - Man, she's smoking. She comes off as alien, exotic and beautiful. The actress absolutely kills it.

The bridge - It's not the TOS bridge. The TOS bridge will never come back, it's too old school. I love how they purposely designed the aesthetics of the bridge as an homage to the original. I'm sure some nitpickers will complain, but honestly? When you're going for a well written drama, it's the story that sells it. It skews far closer than the JJ Abrams bridge.

I'm hooked. And my kids are too.

Heh ...
Don't you know, they're only getting morning wood because the fire died out in the fireplace. :nyah:

I thought the episode was pretty much excellent.

The one thing I could have done without is having Khan's cousin and Kirk's brother on board. Not the characters themselves, in fact I really liked La'an and we'll see about Sam in the future obviously, but the famillial connections. Seems very small universy without any apparent benefits, for now at least.

I remember there was A LOT of "Mother Fu**ers" being thrown around on the internetz back when They announced that, but not much in the way of complaints about it.

They probably knew Samuel L would come to their houses to "discuss" it .

I'm not sure how much, if any, uproar there was with Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin, but another phenomenal actor.

The actual main moral of "ARENA" is that Humans don't need to act upon their baser instincts.
Sure.

But then the question is how should they act instead, and "Arena" provides an answer to that as well, an answer that applies to the Gorn as well as the Federation. (Listen to the other side, don't jump to conclusions, be open to the possibility that your own side was in the wrong first. When Kirk refuses to kill the Gorn Captain, the first thing he says is that maybe the Gorn thought they were protecting themselves.)

Yes La'an. (Sorry I meant Singh not Kahn lol. I edited my OP)

Maybe "mean" isn't the right word, (Cranky?) but at least based on this episode, La'an is another Burnham/Raffi-type who continually pop up in Kurtzman productions, even his non-trek related ones.

She seems like this series trying to do Orville's Alara which, considering Alara is gone, I'm willing to accept. (Though Alara had more of a "fun" or softer edge to her.)

My biggest problem with the episode was how the Gorn have now been retconned as savages. This completely negates the anti-prejudice message of TOS’s Arena, and why I’m only giving this episode a 4 out of 10. This was a really, really big screw-up.
I don't see it as a retcon. In TOS S1 - "Arena" - the Gorn had intimate knowledge of the Federation/Star Fleet, and understood all tat info well enough to convincingly fake a message drawing the 1701 to Cestus III (and seemed to also know it was the ship assigned to patrol that sector) to TEST their military capability and tactics - and seconds prior to Kirk and Co. beaming down to find the Base destroyed - were convincingly maintaining a casual and live conversation between Kirk and the (two days dead) Commodore Travers.

Per dialogue in the episode, the Gorn also ignored a surrender offer (which they clearly did understand) even after being told the Base had women and children.

So yeah, seems like very calculated, callous and savage behavior by the Gorn in TOS - "Arena" itself -- no SNW retcon here.

KLAATU: Furthermore, you do not know the dangers of space travel. You know nothing of inertial dampers and deflector beams. You see space as cold and empty, when in truth it is filled with dust, matter, and radiation beyond comprehension. Even if you were to escape your solar system, it would take you decades to reach the nearest star. Gort and I will be leaving soon. I could say, "See you out there", but Gort and I know the only thing fast about your race is your temper and television transmissions. Your broadband and 5G are laughable. It is good we are leaving you to rejoin the civilized Federation of which you will never be a member...

CROWD: (GRUMBLING) What an asshole! Who does he think he is to talk to us like that?! Just because he's got that killer robot for muscle.
CROWD: (GRUMBLING) Yeah! He's a jerk! He doesn't know a thing about humanity!
CROWD: (GRUMBLING) It's not our fault we're stuck all alone on this lonely planet!
CROWD: (GRUMBLING) Yeah! We didn't ask to be locked out of the galaxy!
CROWD: (GRUMBLING) Let's show him a thing or two! Yeah!
CROWD: (GRUMBLING) Yeah! Let's all get along, share our resources and know-how, and double down on science and benevolence!
CROWD: (GRUMBLING) Hell yeah! We can do it! We'll all get along, prosper, and live long. And make sure everyone else does, too!
CROWD: (GRUMBLING) Yeah!!! Let's do it! Let's show that asshole a thing or two! Come on! Let's get to the stars! Make it so!
