I'm honestly amazed. Certainly the best genre script he's ever done.
And as I said, I think his sedate directing style worked well for a throwback episode like this with minimal action.
This didn't even feel like Kurtzman Trek except for the slightly over the top verbal joking from Chapel, which was totally out of the Tilly School of Awkward Dialogue.

For what it's worth M'Benga appears to be usinng cosmetic appliances to change Spock's appearance in another episode this season, putting what looks like latex on his forehead.
What's the point of reversing the rating scale?! Lots of miscast votes?

Oh, he earns my full respect and congratulations for nailing this premiere and making it feel amazing. But his track record with this franchise is very hit or miss and I'm not going to ignore that and my previous statement isn't inaccurate from my point of view.

Planet of the week stuff was very very thin. I can see why since they had a lot of runtime to set-up our new cast and things, it's why the Berman Trek shows kicked off with a two-parter so you'd have time to balance both. Since announcement I've been more excited for the second episode than the first but yeah this was fine. Visually beautiful and tonally about where I wanted it to be.
Felt the Sam Kirk appearance was very unnecessary but I'll live, they could make it all worthwhile with the material they give him.

His track record with anything genre-related has been bad generally. He's done some decent non-SF scripts in the past (like for A Beautiful Mind) but everything in sci-fi or adjacent genres has been mediocre to crap.
Until now.
Sam Kirk was the only facet of the whole thing I found absolutely gratuitous and unnecessary from any standpoint, narrative or otherwise, but even I'm fine with it now. They nailed Shatner's 1967 Sam Kirk mustache.
