Starship Naming Schemes for a new Sci-Fi universe

I remember looking at a sci-fi book in a bookstore a number of years ago, and the author had named his ships after porn stars. There was the Annette Haven and the Dorothy Lemay among others. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the book or the author.

Very deep.

Do you at least remember any other ships of the fleet?

Or you could just name your ships after characters from My Little Pony. No one would know the difference.

wow..i am surprised nobody talked about the TV show Andromeda. One of the bets things of the show were the ship names -- sooooo different from Trek... their names were often phrases, like Balance of Judgment, Eight Fold Path, Andromeda Ascendant. A longer list is here.

Go with something like that.. maybe have the phrases be one where a nickname can come out of it (like Rommie from Andromeda)

One thing I ask -- PLEASE no more white people's names!

One of the first shows I thought of. Babylon 5 used names from Greek mythology, whereas Battlestar Galactica used a wider mythical basis, but also altered Earthcentric names like Atlantia and Pacifica.

For a "trekkian" list, you may want to check out the list of names for the Star Fleet Battles game system - apart from the 13 Connies (Federation Heavy Cruisers), none of the names are really canon, but it gives an idea of what different naming conventions based on the psychology of various races could be.

(EDIT: I deliberately left out the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.)

For a Terran Exploration Fleet: Famous explorers, famous philosophers, famous physicists, famous astronomers, famous astronauts/cosmonauts, etc...

For a Terran Militant Fleet: Famous conquistadors, famous conquerors, famous generals, famous medal recipients, famous battles, famous mythological gods/heroes, etc...

For something more abstract, I always thought that the HALO universe UNSC Navy has some nice names:

UNSC Pillar of Autumn
UNSC Spirit of Fire
UNSC Unto the Breach
UNSC The Heart of Midlothian
UNSC Forward Unto Dawn
UNSC In Amber Clad
UNSC Point of No Return
UNSC From the Ashes
UNSC All Under Heaven
UNSC Edge of Umbra
etc...

I would say name them whatever the hell you want, unless you opt for totally alien names there's always the chance of using one that's been used by Trek. It also depends on just what role the ship in question would fulfill. A capital ship might be named after a great political or military figure either from actual history or the in-universe history (e.g. the Gretchen Bauer, the first democratically elected Premier of the United Earth Government), a warship could be named after a major battle (e.g. the Jutland), a deep space explorer could be the Marco Polo, whilst a search-and-rescue ship could be named after Grace Darling.

The sky's the limit.

Very deep.

Or "Deep Inside..."

Sorry, no - I saw that book back in the early 90s. Truth to tell, I'm kind of surprised that I remembered it at all. I did quick Google search, but I wasn't able to find the title or author of the book.

OK, that was funny.

USS Cabrera
