Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

DSC's ships may be an eclectic mess of questionable designs but I have yet to actively dislike any PIC spaceship. Even the most boring Romulan ships are still generally Romulan in feel and appearance.

It was an interstellar empire with vast military and economic resources spread across its rather large territory. I imagine that the Star Empire's leaders and intelligence network had a number of contingency plans in effect to preserve as much of their military and intelligence-gathering infrastructure as possible if an existential threat to Romulus itself ever reared its head.

Kinda curious how the Zhat Vash/Tal Shiar have the resources for that many warbirds after Romulus went kaplooey and the Empire bit the dust.
We don't know how big they are, if most of them are small to mid size that is one thing, if they are all along the lines of D'Deridex or larger that is something else.

The Tal'Shiar probably hid them from the Romulan Senate, plus as others have already said its only the home system that was destroyed, I have no doubt they had plenty of construction capacity elsewhere both publicly known and secret.

Same for Starfleet, they lost Mars but there would be plenty of other shipyards distributed across the Federation.

These ships seem smaller to me (that’s make sense) and it’s been 14 years. The Star Empire was the third most powerful in local space. They no doubt had other shipyards. Chabon said via Instagram that the Free Romulan State was the largest faction among the Romulan factions that arose since the RSE collapsed.

If the “Free” Romulan State is the one the Tal Shiar is backing, does that mean this one is more or less “free” than others?

Basically if they have to go around calling it the "Romulan Free State" that means it really isn't free at all.

Might be these winged craft are way older than the supernova. Nothing is said about them being recently built or of a modern design, after all. And either Romulans saw no logic in taking winged transatmospheric spacecraft to deep space during TNG, and only got desperate after losing their big warbirds and/or the dockyards capable of keeping those running - or then these winged things always were the secret assets of a secret service, and went unseen because that was their appointed and designed task.

They sort of played up the boxy things in the upper corners of the BoP stern for ENT. Oh's ship here has similar boxes. Warp nacelles - or badass railguns of some sort? Next week will no doubt tell. That is, if they don't fire, we can declare them warp nacelles all right...

I’m betting they’re guns.

That's true; at this time we have zero indication of the age of these ships. But the implication (i.e. there's a fleet of 218 of them all the same design, the fact that nobody mentions that they're old, etc.) is that they are brand-new. I think that if the Romulans just cobbled together whatever resources they had to assemble a fleet, that all the ships would be different, and different ages (just like the Federation fleets in DS9.) I have a feeling that if a specific ship was meant to be old, then that will be revealed in dialogue. I would also think that if there's a fleet of 218 completely identical warbirds, that they were probably constructed at the same time, and for the express purpose of being part of this fleet.

After seeing the NX-01 refit...no!

The NX-01 refit's not what I would ever have done to the ship but the original NX-01 design is a thing of beauty.

Funny, I think the refit makes the ship look better (other than not removing the now-superfluous saucer deflector dish.) But I guess any change to that ship that makes it look less like the Akira class from which it was based is a good idea to me.
