Comic book movies/TV shows - best not to think too hard about realism. Luke became a 2/3 Jedi by spending what felt like a weekend on Dagobah with Yoda (or else the Millenium Falcon travelled at sublight speeds for months or years to reach Bespin )

Luke was there at least a month, and being a Jedi is kind of supernatural. That's why I have no issue with Courtney doing the exact same thing she did with the cosmic staff. That staff is an equalizer.

Luke was an adult, and with the Force, could probably handle himself in most situations after a month of lessons from Yoda. Of course, he got his ass handed to him by Vader who showed him what it's like to face someone who was really trained.

And yeah, I do think that they were stuck in the Falcon for weeks minimum.

But that's another issue.

What Courtney did was like Gabrielle on Xena. She went from not knowing a thing about fighting to being able to beat anyone who wasn't a main character in one episode where she was basically just handed a stick.

Or Daniel LaRusso somehow being able to beat about 6 black belts just to beat a 2 time champ because he trained for 6 weeks.

Not to derail the thread but that is exactly what happens in Empire. Chronologically, the stuff with the Falcon in the asteroid belt happens before Luke reaches Dagobah. Luke spends months training--Falcon reaches Bespin.

That kind of narrative shortcut is by no means limited to SF/fantasy. How often in 24 did characters drive, fly, or walk farther in a fraction of an hour than it would be physically possible to do in reality? Speed-of-plot writing is a constant regardless of genre.

For years, I wanted to see an entire episode with our characters stuck in LA Traffic as the clock kept ticking. Jack yelling at Chloe to find him a better route. The terrorists sweating it out in the back of a van worried that their latest bioweapon was going to overheat. It would have been classic.

I was surprised that Henry Jr. came around so fast, but I liked the way it was done better than if his arc had been dragged out over several more episodes. I really don't believe he is dead (but I haven't checked to see if there are spoilers out there), but the battle scenes were really well done. Brainwave is really a cold-hearted SOB.

Yeah, I definitely agree there's a pretty good chance Henry Jr. is alive. That's exactly the kind of "death" characters survive all the time, especially when they have the kind of super powers he does.

Even though he will probably survive, and we kind of all know it, the scene itself was a powerful, character defining moment for the entire group. It really showed them how high the stakes are, it helped them realize that the mission is more important than personal grudges, it brought them together as a team, it helped bond Henry Jr. and Courtney, and Henry and Yolanda. Overall this was one of the more powerful episodes in the Arrowverse.

Even though he will probably survive, and we kind of all know it, the scene itself was a powerful, character defining moment for the entire group. It really showed them how high the stakes are, it helped them realize that the mission is more important than personal grudges, it brought them together as a team, it helped bond Henry Jr. and Courtney, and Henry and Yolanda. Overall this was one of the more powerful episodes in the Arrowverse.

Definitely powerful..and good set up with Henry h"hearing" how Yolanda lived him and that his dad really did live his mom... he has some major emotional turmoil... but sets him up to join the crew in a believable way.

He has good reason to join them (risking their lives to save his dad) and then for him (sacrificing himself)

Is anyone else suspecting at this point that Courtney's connection to the staff is through her mother--not her father? That Starman was perhaps her uncle? It would still allow for Henry to be her cousin, and add a layer to the mother's reaction as she may have known about the staff all along.

Hmm, I hadn't thought of that. If that is the case, I hope she tells Courtney soon, there really is no reason to hide it now that Courtney has the staff and has become a superhero herself.

From a story point of view, it wouldn't be good for the show to kill off Henry Jr right now, so I'm in the camp that hopes he isn't dead. What makes it interesting is that Jr. would be a perfect counter for his father.

You could also get a potential Luke/Anakin parallel. It's a good enough story that ending it now would be a huge waste.

I would be very surprised if Sylvester is actually Courtney's dad. It's an obvious swerve and the suggestion that the connection is through the mother is interesting. The only issue though is how come Stripesy wouldn't know?

That said, is Sylvester the first Starman in this show? I'm almost positive I remember them mentioning the actual Starman and that Sylvester didn't create the staff. What if Courtney is connected to the staff through an earlier Starman?

Maybe Courtney is related to him. But here's another question--if Sylvester is NOT related to Ted Knight, then how did Sylvester get the staff to work? With Hourman, we KNOW there's a genetic component, but do we REALLY know that with the staff?

Sylvester was pretty vague as to WHO could yield it... Now, i am hoping that the emphatic "it is NOT you" was due to years of experience seeing it NOT work for Pat, and that Sylvester didn't MEAN it to sound like Pat wasn't worthy or something... just for him to not waste his time trying to work it.

Regarding tomorrow's episode, I'm curious. Seems like it's a lot to do the Shining Knight episode AND bring in Courtney's dad.

But so far, the writers have earned my trust. It's season 2 that has me concerned with CW taking over.
