Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

I remember someone going monkey shit because Enterprise had phase cannons and pistol. They pitched an absolute fit about it not respecting canon, claimed it made the show trash, and argued that it disrespected Worf’s line in TNG about there being no phasers in the 22nd century They also insisted that the fact they weren’t using the lasers from “The Cage” was proof that the showrunners didn’t care about continuity and should be fired.
Was it Stewey?

I’m confused. Wasn’t Alex Kurtzman an executive producer on all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard? How could anything be “slipped in right under his nose”?

The 3rd season Kurtzman went to work on Clarice. So his attention was not on the 3rd season and matalas had pretty much total control over the show. An exceutive producer credit doesnt mean a person has any or much input into the final product. It really was matalas's vision not Kurtzmans. That's why the tone is so different. Its not perfect but it felt the most like Star Trek.

Not to mention it was Kurtzman himself who hired the Blessed Lord Terry (hallowed be they name) and mandated him issued the Holy Decree to make the third season a TNG reunion. Which the Cult of Terry always ignores.

Clarice AIRED in February - June 2021.
Picard Season 3 was in production from September 2021 - March 2022.
So, Kurtzman was working on a canceled show during production of a show that he was EP on that had massive changes occuring? As always, a little bit of research goes a very long way.

Once again, you have no idea what the fuck you’re talking about.

I do know what im talking about. Kurtzman was working on Clarice. Season 3 of Picard was all matalas.

Again Kurtzman was working on clarice. The second season was canceled. Picard season 3 was all matalas.

Matalas was the sole show runner and wrote the story.

AI Overview
+4

Terry Matalas was the sole showrunner for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, bringing his vision for the series' finale, while Alex Kurtzman, as the overall franchise captain, remained an executive producer, though Matalas had creative control for the final season to deliver the fan-focused sendoff.
  • Terry Matalas: Served as the sole showrunner for Season 3, writing and directing, and focusing on bringing back the original Next Generation cast for a classic Star Trek feel.
  • Alex Kurtzman: Remained an executive producer and oversaw the Star Trek universe but stepped back from day-to-day creative control on Picard for Season 3, allowing Matalas to lead.

Just like Lower Decks was Mike McMahon’s vision.
Just like Prodigy was the Hageman brothers’ vision.
Just like SNW is the vision of Akiva Goldman and Henry Alonso Myers.

All with Kurtzman’s oversight.

Just like Matalas and Picard season 3.
Exactly so. Kurtzman operates in the exact same manner that Berman did during his time. The showrunners manage their specific shows, but the Major-Domo oversees every individual series with the final say.

Anyone who thinks Showrunner A gets more autonomy than Showrunner B is purely talking out of their ass. That isn’t how television works, nor has it ever worked that way.

Kurtzman there. There's a reason matalss is no longer there. He made the most popular seaskn of trek. When kurtzman got back from his failed Clarice series he didnt back matalas like he should have. Instead of legacy we got the terrible academy. I am so glad matalas got a tos Connie in there.

And yet Academy is so terrible you've made a vast number of posts on threads about how terrible it is.

This is the most ridiculous thing I read this week. Star Trek: Picard was literally made by the production company founded by Alex Kurtzman, but you want to make it sound like he had nothing to do with it. Matalas had creative control and handled day-to-day production, sure, but the guy at the top was still Alex Kurtzman. I don’t understand what the obsession is with wanting Kurtzman to have nothing to do with it. But also, I’m not sure why I bother asking, but what’s the metric for Picard season three being “the most popular season of Trek”? Not that it would change even one bit how I personally thought it was one of the worst seasons of the franchise ever, but I’m curious.

Legacy was never a thing, and thank God for that. It would've been terrible. The New Jersey also means nothing other than Matalas chose that particular art style. Whatever you think it means, it doesn't.
