Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

^ This. I’m not sure how optimistic I am about this show at this point, but I certainly wouldn’t mind being wowed. And yes, I assume this will be serialized much in the way Discovery has been. Everyone ready for season one’s Mystery Box?

How much do we wanna bet the Mystery Box will be the exact nature of Paul Giamatti’s character? They hinted at him being related to one of the characters, and I’m kinda assuming a big chunk of season one will be about finally finding out who and what exactly he is and why he can whistle the Star Trek theme so well.

I’m assuming the usual streaming model like DISCO and PIC.

I think it's worth noting that DIS, whatever else you thought of it, walked back from the serialized structure pretty hard after Season 1.

DIS's first season only had a few sort of memorable episodes (the away mission to Pahvo, the Mudd time loop episode) with everything else just kind of running together as part of a multi-episode arc. By even the second season, there was already a "plot of the week" format. Yeah, the pacing of the seasons as a whole left a lot to be desired, but there were actual things that happened in (most of) the episodes.

PIC actually went in the reverse order, though. Season 1 had some definable episodes mixed into the overall serialized structure, but in Seasons 2 and 3 the individual episodes really lacked any character of their own.

From what I can tell, Giamatti's character is gonna be one and done for this season, so I'm sure they'll move onto something new for Season 2, just like DIS.

**sigh**

I think that's a good thing.

I think one of the most awful elements of DIS and PIC structurally was the lack of any long-term plan. The "serialization" just amounted to each season arc, each of which was more-or-less as self-contained as the average Voyager episode.

If you're going to do serialization, commit to long-term character arcs. Particularly given the modern short seasons are only the length of about 1/3rd of an old season of TV.

I would want the long term arcs with the cadets not the villain.

No, I get that, and I agree. I'm also happy that the antagonist seems fairly low-level, because I don't want the cadets to face a galactic-level threat in their first outing. Antagonists need to escalate over time.

I'm just saying I hope there's some sense of a wider plan than "get through the season arc, and shake the etch-a-sketch."

I don't get that impression so far, with the limited information currently out there.

Yeah, we probably did. The way it’s worded in the article led me to believe it was new info. I just think it’s kinda funny, because (warning: hyperbole) everyone and their mother on this show seems to be half-something.
True.

But, that's been a trend since TNG it felt like. K'heleyer, Batel in the Romulan Prison Camp, Simon Tarses, Sela, then Tora Ziyal, The Sisko, and on and on.

He is his own father. He will travel back in time and make love with his Mom, who will then give birth to him.
