News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

I mostly hate the "no one asked for" criticism

Anyways, I'm lukewarm towards this idea but I don't think it's inherently a bad idea or destined to fail. Although I'd prefer it come right after Picard and follow up on 90s Trek

My main concern is too much forced drama
We're talking about characters in their late-teens and early-20s, so it's natural that it's going to be filled with things they think is deathly serious, but we'll think is ridiculous. It's what being high school and college age is all about. I'll just ask myself, "What would I have done or thought at that age?" If it rings true when looking at it through that prism, I'll let it slide.

I just mean some seem to reach for reasons this could be bad. If it's done right, it could be a really good gateway show for the next generation of fans. Teen drama can be done well. I think a college drama, distorted through the lens of Star Trek could be a really fresh direction.

I mean, it could be bad, sure, but it could be good as well. As an optimist, I lean toward the latter in all things Star Trek related.

I think they should dedicate the first episode to Harve Bennett. ;)

Speculation - Possible character types and tropes we are going to see in this show:

1. A Love Triangle/On-Off/Unrequited/Forbidden Romance subplot. It's just part of the genre.

2. So most likely a conventionally 'attractive' pair of teens. Pretty teens. Maybe the romance would be same sex in line the boundary pushing that DSC consciously engages in.

3. An Outsider. A Worf/Spock. Someone who is struggling to settle in.

4. An Asshole. There's always an asshole in teen-dramas. The asshole should have a gang of braying, sycophantic minor assholes who follow them around. The asshole doesn't get in trouble because their parents are admirals.

5. Depressed Kid

6. Science Whiz

7. Teachers. Opportunities for guest spots. You could have Hologram Janeway as a teacher for example. Seems the most likely place for former DSC cast members to transition over as well.

8. Will this be the first show since DS9 which is mostly just in a place, rather than doing much travelling? Or will they be off doing projects on shuttles and ships? Is the academy a planet based location or is it a station? Anyway, there's potential to really serialise a show like that. A human adventure.

I dunno. Until I learn more, I'm firmly in the 'intrigued' camp.

Tawny Newsome is joining the writing staff.

The young generation should be well-represented.

Newsome is 40. A larger number than I'd usually expect to be associated with 'the young generation'. ;)

(This is not a criticism of Newsome, or a claim that she shouldn't be writing for the show, or anything else I can't think of right now.)

It's gonna be Buffy or Smallville crossed with Star Trek. Teen angst, lovey dovey eyes and end of season kisses, and saving the galaxy between lessons. I can't wait, YMMV.

It's pretty much designed to bring new fans in, which Trek desperately needs to survive.

NO! Only those who have endured The Trials have any right to call themselves Star Trek Fans. And enduring The Trials is only possible for those born in the twentieth century who are at least old enough to have watched TNG in first run. This is the way. I have spoken. So say we all.

( ;) )

Commandant Bennett.

Have him be like his ancestor Admiral Bennett. Send cadets out on the flagship for an inadvertent rescue mission but the ship's in shambles and barely functional, yet it's somehow the only ship with an experienced commanding officer.

I hope there's an angsty emotional Vulcan who makes all the other angsty emotional Vulcans we've seen in Trek look like nothing. And I hope they mind meld with everyone and it leads to some kind of canonical acknowledgement that Spock and Tuvok were complete sluts* for melding with anything that moved.

*we do not slut shame on this board, we slut celebrate!

Did I ask for this series? No. Does that mean I won't enjoy it? No. I will give any ST a chance to entertain me, and I'm sure I will find a level of enjoyment in it, even if it isn't designed with me in mind as the core audience. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favourite series' of all time, and I was so not the target audience.

SFA is also in fairness something that a portion of ST fans have been asking for for years - so if attracting a younger audience, but bringing along some built in fans as well is the hope then it is a fair shout.

As for the "no one asked for this" argument - let's be honest, a.) what people usually mean when they say this is "I didn't ask for this", and b.) given some of the truly awful alternatives proposed by fans (just check out some of the "let's rewrite season X of ST show X" threads on here for examples), I'm not surprised studios don't always give them what they ask for.

Yep, "no one asked for" really means "I do not want" and they aren't secure enough to just say it, so they universalize it this way.

I too am lukewarm on it, but will definitely give it chance. There are at least decent odds it will be pretty good.
