News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

A few things. I will keep an open mind, but I would be very disappointed if it was a Grey's Anatomy.

Second, as a Prodigy fan I am a little worried. Will they have 2 shows about young cadets?

I am not excited. But, I wasn't excited about Prodigy either. I will keep an open mind since it is Trek and the first five NuTrek shows have been fantastic (sorry Discovery haters).

Personally, I would rather have had a Section 31 or Legacy show announced.

I do hope it is in 32nd century. It could star Tilly. We can explore more of 32nd Century and it would be more interesting because of the Burn.

I got the feeling that for a lot of Discovery seasons 3 and 4, they kinda held a lot of the 32nd century close to their vest. For instance, are we ever clear on what the current state of warp drive is? They never really pin it down. Is it quantum slipstream? Protostar? Something else. Where are the Klingons? etc.

There are big questions they didn't seem to want to answer because maybe they didn't want to box themselves in on other shows.

I'm hoping that an Academy show will slow things down a bit and allow this new Trek universe to grow more organically. Remember how the Dominion was just whispers and suggestive looks during DS9 season 2? If they handle the storytelling right, an Academy show could make the world feel a lot bigger than it did in DSC seasons 3 and 4 and set up better payoffs.

Obviously I'm still looking forward to see what happens in DSC season 5.

Well, for three more episodes, yeah.

We'll see what the fan and audience response is to those last three, versus the Y.A. Tilly Series.

Without spoilers, the final episodes have the potential to get the most positive fan response thus far for a Nu Trek show. It sets the stage for all new adventures.

As to whether there will be a demand for them, we'll find out in 3 weeks.

There is zero indication an Academy series must be set on Earth.
Yeah, there is no indication that it "must" be set on Earth. But with the "reopening" phrasing and the fact that Trek has only ever talked about "The Academy" as being the one campus near San Fran (which was not practical in my opinion, you need more officers than that each year), it is likely.

I would be much more interested in a space station-set Academy series. Have them build a new, expansive Academy station to celebrate the "rebirth" of the Federation. WOuld be cool.

But I can also see the advantages of having it planet side: ability to use outdoor settings, cheaper sets, and maybe we would get to see some actual non-Starfleet Earth/city culture (I always enjoyed the small glimpses we saw of civilian life, mostly in TNG/DS9 and a tiny bit in VOY/ENT).

Missing the point, as most complaints around tears do.

I work with adults and coworkers who regularly cry. Sorry to say they don't fit the Trek evolved standard.
Man, I don't think I have ever seen a coworker cry.

To be fair..........

The Diversity is the only thing I like about this concept, but I expect the showrunners to fail at it.

It's the bloody 32nd Century. There shouldn't be many full-blooded Humans anymore. We've been living with aliens for 1000 years.

Hell, there shouldn't even be human genders for the most part. Babies born in labs. Women no longer carrying them.

Less physical differences between the genders and most people should appear non-binary. It should look very alien to us today.

They played it way too safe and unimaginative with Discovery's take on the 32nd century.
I agree that the worldbuilding in the 32nd century has been sorely lacking. The showrunners in S3/S4 just clearly were not at all interested in that. If you took out a few small changes like the visual look of the programable matter and the insta-transporters, you could easily convince me that S3/S4 were set in the 25th century of Trek. The 23rd century crew of the Discovery certainly seemed to make the transition with not a single hiccup or cultural roadbump.

Hopefully, the new showrunners and the setting of a single, primary location (like a station or planet where, as in DS9, the people and problems from last week's episode are still around such that you have to deal with the consequences of actions and have to consider long-term issues) will make worldbuilding (with the appropriate technological, sociological, and biological changes) more front-and-center.

...I just really liked the idea of a group of disparate beings coming together as part of the inaugural class of Starfleet Academy, being the first ones trying to figure out how to make this whole new integrated Starfleet work and all the stumbling blocks they'd encounter along the way.

I will say that if it couldn't be set in the 22nd century, then the 32nd century is definitely the next best thing. Given the state of the galaxy at this point, with the academy only just starting to come back online after a century or so, should offer up a lot of the same vibe I was imagining for a 22nd century Starfleet Academy.
I like this idea: working together to define what the new Academy should be/what new officers in the expanding fleet should be is a good idea.

I always thought that was a good idea for the first season of ENT: show Earth building out the concept of what a starship crew should be, but the powers that be killed Braga's pitch for that for S1 and instead had them all ready to go into space in episode 1. (I was also very disappointed in ENT that the ship itself and all the technology basically worked exactly as it would about a century later, just with "hull polarization" instead of "shields" and "phase pistols" instead of "phasers". Another missed opportunity for both worldbuilding and storytelling. Huh, kind of like the lack of technological innovation for the 32nd century time period.) I would have really liked that. Maybe this Academy idea will have some of the same things. I really doubt it, but there is a chance.

I'm glad the figures are at least ok enough to keep more trek shows coming.

So, nobody else noticed the hilarity of them specifically saying 16 years old? Probably make it some intensive 2 year course to keep a nice churn of cadets going.

...and so avoid having to pay any actor under 18 a large sum of money.

I agree about the lack of World building in the 32nd century and I can totally see this show as an opportunity to open things up a bit. For instance, for as Klingon heavy as the first couple of seasons were, we've yet to see a Klingon in the 32nd century. What's the state of the empire? We've heard Klingons mentioned but we've yet to see one.

My dream scenario would be having someone from the Discovery crew, in my head I'm seeing Tilly but it could really be anybody, seeing the Klingons in the 32nd century, preferably with yet another redesign, and commenting that they look different than they remember.

I want the Klingons design to be like the cantina scene in Star Wars A New Hope or the various versions of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, every one of them should be different.:guffaw:

If Discovery's writers had the chance to pen a story with advance knowledge that it'd be their last, I wonder if they might have gone full circle, with a big exploration of 32nd-century Klingons, and Burnham working closely with them. I think that would have been neat. Maybe SFA sneaks that in there.

Hmm, I'm willing to give it a go. But if they're going down a "rebuilding the Federation" type arc, I'd rather that took place on space.

But maybe something totally different will be refreshing.

Not sure @Serveaux will be watching either one. He’s never been a fan of DISCO and that was before it jumped to the 32nd Century. And he bailed on Picard as well.

YA and Tilly seems conjectural at this point. No hard evidence of either one at this stage, Young cast/characters doesn’t have to mean YA. Though some of the YA SF&F adaptations I’ve seen recently were a little more adult than I expected. While Tilly was set up for SFA in that DISCO episode it will be a few real world years before it hits. Actors move on. If I had my druthers, I go with Sara as an instructor/advisor/Chancellor on the show. he gives more of a teacher vibe than Tilly.

I give everything a chance. I gave Picard two years, one episode and assorted clips. Nothing I've heard or seen since I dropped it intrigues me one whit. Old home week and continuity porn and This Season's Apocalypse. Meh.

I really looked forward to Fuller's show. I made it to "Lorca is an Evul Mirror Bastard!"

I've watched some of the cartoons. They don't do it for me, though my preference is for LD.

Of course I'll check out Starfleet Academy. Why would I not?

Hmm.
Tilly, maybe, as said, I don't think she did a good job on that one episode, but I blame the writers on that one.
Admiral, Yes
Fed President? Maybe, if her time as president was over, then she became the chancelour of the academy.
Disco crew? Maybe, give them a more staring role then they got on Disco.

all dependant on what happens in S5.

I hope the show will be also about the professors and teachers of the Academy. This would bring some balance to the youth side of the drama.

My own feeling on Tilly and the 32nd century aside, those who keep calling the it "The Tilly Show" are kinda getting ahead of themselves, imo. Mary Wiseman is 37 years old and show is supposed to be geared towards young adults. There will be a cast of young, cheap actors of various ethnic backgrounds. They'll probably be in their early 20's, playing late teens and Wiseman will be one of the more prominent characters, but I doubt she'll be the star.

Tilly and 32rd century. Well I'll skip this one...Not interested at all.

I hope this series doesn't take assets away from other 25th century projects. I was hoping for a Starfleet Academy series but in the 25th century. The 32nd century is not that interesting to us Star Trek fans. It looks like a fantasy genre, not a sci-fi genre. More for Harry Potter fans.
