News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

The "wall of fame" makes me deeply uncomfortable.

I know it was meant as a nice easter egg, but by including the names of so many well-known characters, it means we know whose careers end up cut short. Though I suppose it's realistic that not everyone can max out at admiral, or even captain,

More troubling, the inclusion of many characters we knew who died (like Red Squad, Sito, Yar) pretty strongly suggests this isn't just a list of famous Starfleet officers, but those who died in the course of duty. So Riker never gets to retire for realsies. Tom Paris, Bashir, Torres, Nog - all of them end up dying in the course of duty at some point offscreen.

Awards are given posthumously all the time.

There could be a mixture of the living and the dead on the wall (although after 800 years, most of the people on that wall are probably dead regardless).

This was Wesley's rank in Nemesis, right?
It is the insignia he wore in Nemesis, though given both Picard and Prodigy have shown he has remained a Traveler all this time, the belief in fandom is that what we see in Nemesis was something similar to how the novels explained that, he mistakenly thought he was on Betezed and showed up naked. He was then hastily given a uniform with a Lt. JG's insignia on it.

Doesn't explain why he didn't just remove the hollow pip and wear his proper rank insignia though.

I rolled my eyes at the reference to James T Kirk shoved down your throat within seconds. Then it just went down, down, down...

This is exactly the same bullshit that makes me hate most of modern Trek. A snake eating its own tail.

Kirk. Data. Troi. Kim. Sito Jaxa. etc. etc. Sisko! Alien breaking the fourth wall by humming the tune.

All utter bullshit.

And I used to call it fan wank, but what true fan wants this?
The same ones who gush over Picard season three and the prospect of Legacy?

It's even easier than that if you presume her father was a Jem'Hadar, TBH. Even though they were all lab-grown in DS9, we didn't get any idea that they were sterilized. Why bother to sterilize them if you don't hatch out any females?
To state the obvious,...

All of this half-this,/half-that labeling is the opposite of attracting or opening the series up to new viewers. I wonder if the producers even conscious of that or are running on autopilot.

it's a peculiar Star Trek in-group coding premised on the notion that a character's racial background tells you something interesting about them. That it should be the first thing we're told about them. That the character's appearance should be designed to make us curious about what basket we should sort them into - which is doubly funny, because most "alien" makeup design in Star Trek is so minimal and conservative that it has little potential to catch the attention or imagination of anyone who's not already into the franchise.

It's also a problematic, old-fashioned kind of storytelling shorthand that many people would call "racist" now if not for the good will that Trek has built up on so many fronts.

Agreed, they definitely went a bit overboard with the amount of characters being half this and half that. There’s like four, isn’t there? Strikes me as a completely unnecessary, fannish idea. Then again, from an in-universe perspective, in a world where inter-species procreation is a thing, it probably makes sense a millennium down the line that many of those species have reproduced with one another. But yeah, as a storytelling tool it’s super fannish.

I’m personally also not super fond of cramming this full of references to previous Trek productions. This is only the first fucking trailer (!) and it’s already chock-full of cute call-backs and name-dropping. Certainly not something I need in my Trek.

Other than that it looks cool, I guess. Am interested to get to know these new characters and get reintroduced to their world. I wanna say SAM is the most intriguing so far, with her apparently being a newly-activated hologram.

Well now, way to go Kurtzman an Co, this was probably the best Star Trek trailer since the first few from season 1 Discovery. That blew my communicator off.

The 400 year old half Lathanite Chancellor of Starfleet Academy.

You lost an 'n' in the species name somehow.

The biggest point of intrigue for me coming out of this trailer and information dump is the concept that the U.S.S. Athena itself is the titular Starfleet Academy, or at least part of it.

Haven’t spelled the name often enough to have it down. Sometimes “Romulan” gives me trouble too.
