Star Wars Rebels Season Two (spoilers)

Actually this episode didn't do as much for me, what with the generic abandoned space station and the return of the childish Zeb and Ezra fighting from last season (honestly, I'm starting to wish they would just drop the overly cartoonish Zeb altogether). And the new Inquisitors didn't make much of an impression on me either, or seem even half as ruthless and intimidating as the previous Inquisitor. In fact they came across more like a couple of random bounty hunters.

I will say I liked the design of the female Inquisitor though, and Gellar did a good job with the voice (although the probe droid perched on her shoulder like a parrot does remove a few cool points in my book).

I think it's a fair point that Zeb has been the show's weakest link so far. It wouldn't be so bad if his character was more defined, but so far he's mostly there to be the butt of jokes. I honestly find it hard to credit him as being the one actual military veteran of the group, something which Rex's presence now throws into stark relief.

Even that little bit of character development last season about he homeworld and Kallus's role in it's decimation seems unconnected with the character, at least so far.

I don't doubt they have plans to go into his background with greater detail, but for now I can understand people beginning to tire of his childishness on a crew that already has Ezra (who is a child) and Chopper (who's a sociopath.)
It's clear they're constructing a surrogate family dynamic with Hera & Kanan as the maternal & paternal figures respectively and Sabine & Ezra with the older sister/younger dynamic. The problem is that you can't have *two* crotchety grandpa/eccentric uncle figures and out of Zeb and Chopper, Chopper is simply more entertaining.

All that said, I do think this episode when a *little* way towards making Zeb at least seem a little more mature, capable and....you know....not a moron. But only a little.

Interesting tid-bit from this week's Rebel's Recon. Apparently we've seen the Grand Inquisitor before in TCW.

Maybe just as a background character. Or he was surgically altered (or holographic camouflage) to look different during that period. Or the Grand Inquisitor could be a shapeshifter or something.

That plus this it's sort of how they looked in ANH when they were still experimenting with using reflective tape & spinning dowel, before they gave up and just started rotoscoping everything.

So far I do not like Rebels like Clone wars, and why are the lightsabers so thin?

Rebels ain't no Clone Wars. That's true. As awesome as it is, and as much as it scratches itches that need to be scratched, when you go back and marvel at the grand scope of The Clone Wars series, Rebels feels much smaller by comparison.

And that's okay. As much as I loved The Clone Wars these new stories are engaging. But last night's episode, Brothers of the Broken Horn, was incredibly small in scope. perhaps the smallest yet. The only characters involved in this story were Hondo Onaka, Vizago and Azmorigan.

^Some of the best episodes of TCW had very small scopes too. The ones with Ahsoka being hunted by Trandoshans were very contained and character focused.

The scope of 'Rebels' has already started to open up now they've left Lothal behind and that can only get wider as the rebellion gets bigger. Unlike Clone Wars which was more a series of linked stories this, this show seems to have a more definite arc.

I think people forget how underwhelming Clone Wars was at the beginning. Not saying it was bad but it it took several seasons before it became the awesome show it was. Rebels is better at this point then Clone Wars was, so there is so much potential for Rebels going forward.

Quite true. The difference is that Clone Wars always felt a little older than Rebels does. So that, even when it wasn't at its best, the stories seemed to carry a bit more heft than Rebels sometimes does.

That said, there's been a definite shift in tone in Rebels. It's darker and more ominous this season. So that, along with its quality production, Rebels definitely has a promising future - provided it has the room to evolve that Clone Wars did.

Yeah, this week's episode was very mundane. Not bad, just very small and forgettable. Hondo is funny, but it wasn't enough to make the episode.

I think they're planning for a big foreboding shoe to drop. It seems like the writers have been foreshowing a big event with Vader. Rex, Ahsoka, and even Hondo have been making subtle references to Anakin as being some mythical great person, but without actually saying his name. I suspect there's more to it than that.

i was never crazy about Clone Wars. but then, unlike most of you, i gave up after about three or four seasons. it always felt like you had to sit through several mediocre episodes to get to the couple good ones.

After the smoothing and redesign he looked more like one of Ezra's contemporaries than a wily old pirate captain. For me, it seemed to work against who he is and the vocal performance. Did it sink it, no?
