Star Trek's Troubling 50th Anniversary

We'll probably end up with a film where everyone is chasing an Iconian artifact of incredible power. First it'll get picked up by Harry Mudd, who gets captured by the Klingons then the Romulans will ambush the Klingons then Kirk will sneak aboard the lead Romulan ship (with Kirk in full Romulan makeup) to steal the artifact while Spock woo's the female Romulan commander. At the end, they'll dump the artifact into the sun.

Only they get too close to the sun and end up being slingshot forward in time (into the prime timeline as the Iconian artifact opened an interdimensional doorway) and team up with TNG who have to help them get back to the past/alternate timeline as the crew have all begun a rapid aging process due to the unstableness of the interdimentional time travel combined with the effects of the artefact. The climax would see the Enterprise E battling several Romulan warbirds and Klingon BOP as the damaged JJprise (with aged crew) limps toward an artificially created rift/anomaly to the alternate past..

nick frost as Mudd, rosamund pike as Romulan Cmdr, with TNG & TOS casts (with CG Kelly, Doohan)

I don't think CG is at the point where it can do realistic looking people (yet) we'd have to wait a number of years still....

It is getting better, sure, but it still has a long way to go to get out of the Uncanny Valley completely....

I don't think CG is at the point where it can do realistic looking people (yet) we'd have to wait a number of years still....

I think it is debatable, as you might be able to get a face that is close in terms of anatomy and then make the CGI adjustments like they did in Tron Legacy. I don't think it is really necessary for the story, but I understand the appeal.

I agree about Uncanny Valley, but technology is changing.

The CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, confirmed the release dates for upcoming movies of the Star Wars franchise. In a statement published by the Get Your Geek On (via Star Wars Underworld) the CEO revealed the first derivative film will hit theaters in 2016, while the Episode VIII come in 2017.

If Star Wars - The Force wakens going to be very successful, it is going to be difficult to overcome in 2016.

Exactly. I don't know many people who have to choose to see only one movie in any given weekend. Sometimes you just have to splurge. And there are many weekends where you see no movies.

Bob Iger has the final say on what gets released & when after all he runs the ship at Disney, so if that's the plan, you can count on it....

More so if Episode VII makes big box office when it comes out in Dec of this year, it's a wait & see thing, granted I know a lot of "Star Wars Fans" who won't go to see it after being "Burned" on the prequel trilogy....

How all this turns out might change the game plan for Star Trek, as far as the big 50th goes, so let's wait & see, eh ?

Exactly. As I always say, Star Wars and Star Trek aren't rival sports teams. You can like both and see both movies.

On topic, troubling feelings or anxiety over Trek's 50th anniversary seems somewhat appropriate to me. For some reason, nothing ever seems to go smoothly for this franchise.

Actually, I don't know if I'm looking forward to any real TV celebration of Trek or any other form of one. I'm afraid it will just be full of the usual propaganda about Trek.

I think a tell-all Gene Roddenberry biopic would be fitting for Trek's 50th Anniversary. Finally put to rest the non-sense about "Roddenberry's Vision".

I'd buy that for a dollar.

I don't think Trek has ever been healthier than it is today. It was previously becoming the bastion of 'nerdy' middle-age and old people. People aren't as saturated with all things Trek as they were in the mid 90s, when you could find any one of four shows crowding the airwaves anytime day or night. It was campy, not edgy. These new A-trek movies have re-founded what Trek was all about, IMO. -Even if they had to stoop to grave-robbery of an old series to do it.

As for the 50th, I couldn't care less regarding meeting a 50th anniversary deadline. I'd rather they'd put out another good movie than rush a bad idea to market to meet a deadline. A bad movie could kill the momentum created by the first two movies, and possibly any proposed ST-based TV shows that have been in the rumor mill...forever. I'd rather they'd get it right, not fast. It took them 4 years to complete STID after the first movie, so I would be surprised to see another in just two years. Not that it couldn't be done but hey, get it right.
