Star Trek XII Release Date & Box Office Discussion Thread

Ok its gonna be May 4th 2012 then :)

Which happens to be Star Wars day!

Someone start the clock....

Paramount already has Avengers set for 5/4/2012 and Madagascar 3 for 5/25/2012. It'll be interesting to see whether they move things or put Trek XI in June or July which are open right now.

I really don't see the Avengers being made for that date. Maybe I am wrong.. I don't know, I just think its going to be pushed back.

The opening weekend of May has been a comic book or fantasy film for most of this decade.

well they got the cast so what else do they have to do.
Click.

At last nights's 2009 Scream Awards (airing on SPIKE TV October 27th) Collider did interview Star Trek star Karl Urban (McCoy) and was able to get an update on the Star Trek XII sequel and Priest. According to Urban, the plan is still for a draft of the screenplay to be turned into the studio this December and he hopes to be filming mid to late next year. He said the hope is for the sequel to be released in 2011. And for fans of Priest, he talked about how that movie has been going. Here are excerpts from the video interview.

It's customary to quote relevant parts from an article and to provide a link to the source, adding additional commentary/content of your own when doing so. It's also preferred that unnecessary formatting tags and other code be excised from the quoted portion; parts of what you've posted above are cluttered with junk characters and non-functional links. Please be more careful about this in the future.

It seems likely at this point that the film will come out in 2012. If that is the case when would they start shooting it?

I would imagine it would be at least 15 months before it's release. Assuming we get a May 2012 release it seems likely they would start filming sometime in late 2010 or early 2011...

Are my shooting estimates in the ballpark?

More or less, but it's always impossible to completely and accurately predict something like the shooting schedule of such a massive Hollywood flick. I'd guess mid-to-late 2010 for a 2012 release date, but I could certainly be wrong.

ST 09 filmed from Nov 07 to March 08 for an originally planned Christmas 08 release. Assuming a similar schedule (safe since it's basically the same people making the movie) then shooting will probably begin somewhere in spring or early summer of 2011.

Paramount just picked up another franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and are planning a new film for 2012.

Jeez so whatever the year, ST will have to battle a crowd. Although Mutant Ninjas isn't the biggest threat out there...

Yeah, I was just throwing this out there more as general movie news and Paramount news than anything competition-related.

Although adjusting for inflation, the first TMNT movie made $230 million. It was also the #5 movie of 1990. But that was when TMNT were HUGE. It will be interesting to see if Paramount can revive this franchise too.

Paramount bought the Ninja Turtles franchise? Huh, didn't see that one coming. Warner Bros. had it previously, yes? I wonder why they sold it... 2007's TMNT did solid business, I thought.

Regardless, I look forward to a new TMNT film (well, as long as it looks halfway decent, that is). I didn't realize how much money the first film made back in 1990 -- I knew it had been big, but that's really quite incredible. I remember going to see it (possibly for the second time) on my 7th birthday... ah, memories. :)

Technically, Nickelodeon paid $60 million for the rights to TMNT and Paramount is developing the film, as it is a sister-company.

I see... Any word on whether it'll be live-action or animated? Or whether it's a continuation of the existing film series or a complete reboot?

Not sure. I liked TMNT, but I think I'd prefer the next one be live action.

And I remember seeing the first movie back when I was 7 years old too, and being really excited.

A new interview with JJ Abrams out today at Trekmovie, and he states 2012 as the release date:

TrekMovie: Originally Variety reported the plan for the sequel to be a 2011 movie, now Bob and Alex have talked about it maybe being a 2012 movie. You have a million projects going on right now, what is your best guess as to when you think the Star Trek sequel will be released?
J.J. Abrams: I believe the next Star Trek film will be in 2012.
TrekMovie: Do you, or the studio, have a preference for Summer or Winter?
J.J. Abrams: I don’t. My instinct is that the studio wanted to take Star Trek, which was a winter film and move it to the summer. That is what they wanted to do already, so I would guess they would would thinking that this time too, but no date has been set.

So looking at the Summer 2012 schedule so far, Paramount is the only studio to have locked in dates for any films:

May 2012
5/4 - The Avengers
5/25 - Madagascar 3
