Star Trek XII Release Date & Box Office Discussion Thread

Go slingshot around the sun or something and maybe you will end up in the future or maybe you will be fried.

Do what Cartman did and freeze yourself but you might wake up in a world where they destroyed all records of Star Trek (they did that in futurama IIRC)

Accelerate yourself to close to the speed of light for a while which should make time go faster!

Or just wait 3 years like the rest of us.

Back on the subject, I think it is getting more and more likely that Paramounts 'The Avengers' is gonna get moved to 2013/2014 because its just not gonna be ready for the date they have (5th May 2012). I will put 200 quatloos on Trek XII replacing Avengers.

Do you want the next movie

No, I don´t. No more Star Trek. Paramount should instead focus on the Twillight series, which is making a ton of money. Probably a lot more than Trek.

Pine and Quinto could be vampires. That would be awesome.

From an IGN article

When pressed for a release date, Orci said it looked like the sequel would come out in 2012, "but we're not sure."

Kurtzman added that when it came to turning in the first draft, "Originally we were thinking we'd have to have it by Christmas, but the release changed. Certainly I'd say in the next eight months."

This is the first real indication of a 2012 release date from those involved in the production.

Eight months?!?

:(

Oh well, if it is still playing at my local IMAX next week I'll see it "new" one last time on a Sunday.

That way it'll only be 2 1/2 years until the next one comes out.

ah well Chris would be about 32 in 2012 so that will make him act more mature as Kirk but why 2012 can't they do it quickly

What you don't seem to be grasping is that that is quickly. You can't just decide today "I'm going to make a movie" and tomorrow go out and make "Star Trek: The Sequel". There are a lot of preparations involved, a lot of work involved and all of this takes time.

First, there needs to be a finished script -- 6-8 months is not unreasonable and may be a bit overoptimistic. Once that's mostly ready, it gets shown to the studio. Then revisions and fine-tuning can take another few months. If the studio then gives the go-ahead to begin, work on the actual movie can begin.

Not filming yet, no -- there's more preparation to do first. They'll have to do storyboards from the script, work out the set designs, prop designs, costume designs, effects designs -- everything about how everything's going to look. Then you have to work out the production schedule, cast the actors, hire the crew, hire or purchase the equipment you'll need. You'll need to make arrangements for feeding everyone, lodgings for location shoots, transportation for your people and equipment -- all of the things which need to happen so that everything and everyone are in the right places at the right times to make their parts of the movie. 6 to 8 months for all of that, minimum.

Then you're ready to start shooting. That's a month or more right there, just for principal photography, possibly to be extended due to illness, bad weather, accidents, transportation delays, damaged film or cameras necessitating reshoots. There'll also be second-unit photography going on later, after the main cast has finished their stuff.

Then comes post-production -- putting your filmed shots together, editing them down, adding, subtracting, adjusting until balance is achieved. Then comes all of the effects work -- lots of time and effort there -- and after that the music needs to be composed. 8 or 10 months for that.

As you can see, this adds up to more than two years -- minimum -- and this is the extremely-simplified version. Making a movie like this is a pretty huge and complex undertaking, and very resistant to "do it quickly", if you don't want to end up with something which looks as if it were "done quickly" -- i.e., like amateurish garbage (here's your cue, everyone who thought that that was what the first movie looked like. :p)

It's going to take time. Accept that -- realize that these people are professionals and that they know what they're doing. Give them the time they need to do the work, and leave off the hand-wringing about "can't they do it quickly"; that is not going to make the movie happen any sooner and it is very likely to get on other posters' nerves here at TBBS, if kept up. Not a desirable thing.

Ok its gonna be May 4th 2012 then :)

Paramount already has Avengers set for 5/4/2012 and Madagascar 3 for 5/25/2012. It'll be interesting to see whether they move things or put Trek XI in June or July which are open right now.

So Trek XII for the summer, and end of the world for the winter (or reversed for those in the southern hemisphere)? Hope the Blu-ray is out before December 21st.

I really don't see the Avengers being made for that date. Maybe I am wrong.. I don't know, I just think its going to be pushed back.

At last nights's 2009 Scream Awards (airing on SPIKE TV October 27th) Collider did interview Star Trek star Karl Urban (McCoy) and was able to get an update on the Star Trek XII sequel and Priest. According to Urban, the plan is still for a draft of the screenplay to be turned into the studio this December and he hopes to be filming mid to late next year. He said the hope is for the sequel to be released in 2011. And for fans of Priest, he talked about how that movie has been going. Here are excerpts from the video interview.
