Star Trek tops $200 million

Looking at box office takes over the last few years, the movies in the $225 million range end up around 4th, 5th, or 6th in domestic gross for a given year. A finish like that for Star Trek in 2009 would be on par with the franchise's other three big Trek hits.

-- TWOK was sixth in 1982 (the year ET made over $300 million). Tootsie was second, then An Officer and a Gentleman, Rocky III, and Porky's.
-- TVH was fifth in 1986. It was behind Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Platoon, and The Karate Kid, Part II.
-- TMP was beind Kramer vs. Kramer, The Amittyville Horror, and Rocky II in domestic gross.

In TNG movies:
-- FC was 17th in 1996.
-- GEN was 15th in 1994.

Whoa, for the most part, I never realized the TOS movies were in such good company.

But 1982 leads me to believe it was a fairly crappy year for movies. Rocky III? Porky's? And don't get me started about 1986's Karate Kid Part II :)

Porky's made $105 million in the U.S., $27 million more than TWOK made. But ET blew everyone away that year at $359 million. Tootsie was number two, and it grossed "just" half as much as ET.

What surprised me is TMP grossed more than Alien did in the U.S. among the 1979 movie-releases. For some reason, I thought Alien did a lot better than that in the U.S. (Though its foreign gross was far more than TMP's.)

Just looked up at boxofficemojo and the domestic take is upto $209,500,000. If they can do another $71,641,000, it will have done better then all 4 TNG movies combined.

ST 09's supposedly weak international take was $8 million this weekend, almost equaling the NA total of $12.5 mill!! $2.2 million came from Japan, nearly quintupling Nemesis' performance. ST is now at $311 worldwide, after starting at just over $290 million Fri. Amazing.

think it's WOM getting around? I always thought that if it was a hit in America, its international audience just might grow. here's hoping that might be happening.

Blade Runner and STII came out in 1982. How much better does it get????

ST is so strong, it might get a slight jump on the FOURTH OF JULY!

With any luck, the next Harry Potter will bomb and Star Trek will be the best selling movie for 2009
Both Transformers and Harry Potter will almost certainly make more money the Star Trek.

But I just don't get why everyone thinks Transformers is going to do that well. I've seen the trailer several times, and it does nothing for me. I was much more excited about the T4 trailer, and had intended to go see it, but the bad WOM convinced me to pass and wait for the DVD.

I really think that Transformers will go the same route as T4 and Wolverine--handsome looking films in the trailers and commercials, lots of hype and expectation, and then--well, nobody actually goes to see it.

Of course, I admit I could be wrong, NATM did much better than I thought it would.
I didn't even like the first Transformers film aside from the robot fight (and even those had too much shaky cam shots) but it did make $700 million world wide. I don't think this one will do quite as well but I think it will hit at least $600 million worldwide.

Transformers is going to easily beat Star Trek. The first one made $319 million in the U.S. and had a worldwide take of over $700 million.

Star Trek isn't in that caliber of blockbuster just yet. Hopefully the sequel will build on the momentum this film built up much the same way "The Dark Knight" built on the success of "Batman Begins"

More great news! I'm hoping it will get to 250 mil, myself. Nice round number and all. ;)

As for it's competition, I believe Harry Potter is serious competition...but Transformers? Not as much. Transformers is most definitely a 'guy movie' sort of thing. Girls will go watch Star Trek...and girls will go watch Harry Potter...but the only girls who will go and watch Transformers are girls who get dragged by their boyfriends.

As girl scfi fans go, I'm reasonably serious - I try just about all the new scifi TV shows, saw all the LOTR, Matrix, Harry Potter, and PotC movies, etc... Went to see most of the X-Men movies, the Spidermans, etc. Even went to see Watchman (although admittedly it was mainly for Jeffrey Dean Morgan :p ). But I have no interest at all in going to see Transformers.

Hey, I'm a girl and I didn't need to be dragged to see Transformers.

I know a lot of girls who want to see Transformers, including one girl who thinks Star Trek is stupid and didn't like the movie.

I see GI Whatever flopping bigtime and doubt it will break $100 million domestic and the same goes for oversea' s too. I can't think of any other big movies coming out over the remaining 6 months that could challenge ST, Harry and Transformers plus NaTm will probably fall short of $200 million too so we will have our top 3 but in what order is yet to be seen.

GI Joe will do worse then Nemisis.

There's almost no way that happens. Nemesis did absolutely brutal.

Yeah, I have a feeling it will make somewhere around $150 million max.

Remember, Transformers 2 was written by the same guys who wrote Star Trek. If that gives any inclination, Transformers 2 will do very well.

The girl I saw Star Trek and Terminator Salvation with seemed a bit excited by the Transformers 2 trailer. Apparently she thought the first one was good.

Personally I don't get the appeal, but then I didn't see the first movie, so....

I guess it's partly age-based. People who are in their 20's and 30's grew up on Transformers and its various spin-offs, so we were probably the most excited when the first Transformers came out.

"Star Trek" is currently the #1 film of 2009 with $200,350,000.

Though I'm not remotely going to argue that the film wasn't successful... Dude... it's fargin' MAY still. Isn't a bit too early to crown the king when there's more than half the year left? :P
