Star Trek tops $200 million

With any luck, the next Harry Potter will bomb and Star Trek will be the best selling movie for 2009

Not bloody likely. I hang out at a few Harry Potter message boards and they're so anxious for it to premiere since it got pushed back for more than seven months that I'm thinking they're gonna go see it 50 times each. A scarier bunch than anything I've seen here, and some of them communicate in leet speak. :borg:

I agree- HP won't bomb, no matter what happens with reviews. Pixar's new movie is out and there's more summer coming. Trek as #1 movie of 2009 - ain't gonna happen. Sorry, I just gotta stop reading these damn "#1 movie" threads.

Any idea what the international pull has been so far? Usually 1/2 of domestic is a pretty good rule of thumb...

And don't forget about "Up." That could easily pulling $300mil with a good run, and it's getting good reviews too.

93,162,836 international, but this is only updated through Thursday.

I remember last weekend seeing an article somewhere that a rep from Paramount was quoted saying ogg the numbers they believe TREK could hit $250 million domestic and $150 worldwide but I think he was talking best max outcome.

More likely the domestic total wll settle around $230 million and the oversea's total wil hit around $130ish but Oversea's legs go on for longer especially as therem any markets still to open with so it would not surprise me that TREK could hit close to $150 either way a great start for J.J Abrams era.

The last Harry Potter nearly broke $300 million domestic and $1 billion WW so I expect the next one to break both barriers. Hell the final movie could beat all records.

Star Trek already beat out THREE heavy contenders. T4, Wolverine, and Monsters Vs. Aliens.

There are three more heavies inbound that I know of.
Transformers 2
Harry Potter
G.I. Joe

I can see all three breaking the $200 Mil mark.

I don't know who's going to win box office. It's SO hard to telling that.

G.I. Joe won't. It looks like crap. They ruined the whole idea behind G.I. Joe by making them wear special suits that give them super strength and ability.

When I went to see Star Trek and the trailer for G.I.Joe played I remember someone yelling "WTF? Iron Man?" outloud.:rommie:

Yeah, people including me, laughed during the trailer.

They could have done a cool movie, but that trailer dashed my hopes.

G.I. Joe wouldn't normally be my cup of tea anyway; but even I could tell that trailer was lame.

James Cameron's Avatar is kind of a wild card right now, too. Apparently the budget is enormous and they're going for a Christmas release; the buzz for this movie will pick up later on, but it could pass Trek as well. Transformers and Harry Potter are guaranteed to pass Trek, and Up might depending on how good its legs are.

While you never know what will happen I am pretty confident that Transformers and Harry Potter will both pass Star Trek.

Transformers floor is $300 million
Harry Potters floor is $275 million

Pixar's "Up" will be in the same ballpark as Star Trek. If I had to bet I would think that "Up" will finish slightly ahead of ST.

James Cameron's "Avatar" also has a chance to top Star Trek. It's a little hard to gauge just how popular this film will be, but advanced word claims that it is going to be something special.

There is almost no way Star Trek comes in at #1 in the US. I think a top 3-5 finish is the best you can hope for.

Anyway you look at it Star Trek is a major success...
