Both Transformers and Harry Potter will almost certainly make more money the Star Trek. With any luck, the next Harry Potter will bomb and Star Trek will be the best selling movie for 2009![]()

Saldana is in Avatar also...
I expect the top grossers to be: Transformers 2, HP6, Avatar, with Star Trek and Up fighting for the #4 spot.

Avatar this christmas ? A film with such a high budget at a reported $240 million, I thought they really need a summer slot to recoup its money. Not heard much about Avatar despite Cameron I think thats a huge flop waiting to happen (it will make bucks but the budget is going to kill it).
I think TREK is a good fit for 3rd place domestically.

They said the same thing about Cameron's last movie.Incidentally, Avatar is opening on the exact same weekend Titanic did. I'm not saying Avatar will make anywhere near that, but I do think it will get close to $300 million.
The mere fact that the film is designed for IMAX 3D and looks to have at least a good 3 months on IMAX screens, and that equals a lot of money.

I don't see the annoying mums/daughters rewatching this movie a dozen times. Cameron hook up with Ridley Scott and give me that epic Alien movie I've always wanted
speakig of Aliens ain't Weaver and that dude who played Cpl Hicks in the Avatar movie.

I don't expect him to go back to Alien, especially since someone is developing a prequel to that now too.
The cast for Avatar is Sam Worthington (one of the bright spots of T4), Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Michelle Rodriguez.
The concept art for the movie looks really cool so far.

G.I. Joe won't. It looks like crap. They ruined the whole idea behind G.I. Joe by making them wear special suits that give them super strength and ability.
When I went to see Star Trek and the trailer for G.I.Joe played I remember someone yelling "WTF? Iron Man?" outloud.![]()
Yeah, people including me, laughed during the trailer.
They could have done a cool movie, but that trailer dashed my hopes.
I was extremely disappointed in the G.I. Joe previews too. Its hard to know what will resonate with the viewing public at large at given time though. It could be crapola, but still hit it big.Star Trek already beat out THREE heavy contenders. T4, Wolverine, and Monsters Vs. Aliens.
There are three more heavies inbound that I know of.
Transformers 2
Harry Potter
G.I. Joe
I can see all three breaking the $200 Mil mark.

I understand Harry Potter, and probably Avatar, since it's had a lot of buzz for a long time, and it's a JC movie...
But I just don't get why everyone thinks Transformers is going to do that well. I've seen the trailer several times, and it does nothing for me. I was much more excited about the T4 trailer, and had intended to go see it, but the bad WOM convinced me to pass and wait for the DVD.
I really think that Transformers will go the same route as T4 and Wolverine--handsome looking films in the trailers and commercials, lots of hype and expectation, and then--well, nobody actually goes to see it.
Of course, I admit I could be wrong, NATM did much better than I thought it would.
I still say Trek can come in 2nd behind HP, depending on the WOM around Avatar(it's really a wild card this year, could go either way. Is it Titanic, or is it Waterworld?)
I see GI Whatever flopping bigtime and doubt it will break $100 million domestic and the same goes for oversea' s too. I can't think of any other big movies coming out over the remaining 6 months that could challenge ST, Harry and Transformers plus NaTm will probably fall short of $200 million too so we will have our top 3 but in what order is yet to be seen.
Looking at box office takes over the last few years, the movies in the $225 million range end up around 4th, 5th, or 6th in domestic gross for a given year. A finish like that for Star Trek in 2009 would be on par with the franchise's other three big Trek hits.
-- TWOK was sixth in 1982 (the year ET made over $300 million). Tootsie was second, then An Officer and a Gentleman, Rocky III, and Porky's.
-- TVH was fifth in 1986. It was behind Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Platoon, and The Karate Kid, Part II.
-- TMP was beind Kramer vs. Kramer, The Amittyville Horror, and Rocky II in domestic gross.
In TNG movies:
-- FC was 17th in 1996.
-- GEN was 15th in 1994.
